Bob and Russ are amazing combination. Feeling, technique and imagination. That is why Yellojacktets are one of the best quartet in the world. Bob is my favorite Sax player..
I did a written transcription of Bob’s solo on this tune then memorized it… i think that’s the key to doing your own explorations on a standard like this, using a few of the masters’ motifs as a springboard, it really opened up the tune for me… thanks Bob and Russ!
Tunes played: 1. You and the night and the music (jazz standard) 2. Stick-to-it-ive-ness (from Club Nocturne) 3. Runferyerlife (Bob Mintzer tune, on Yellowjackets, Mint Jam and 25)
Gets me how so many of the "top players" bow to corperate sponsorship. Supposedly they don't always get a free horn. They go on and on about their sponsor's brand for years. When a better offer comes along they jump ship. "But when I go home I play my Martin" :) As for horns like this Eastman 52nd Street Bob is playing here...who says you can't get a good sound from a Taiwanese horn. :) American company yes but the horns are made in Taiwan. As are P. Mauriat's, Cannonballs, Trever James (made in Taiwan/assembled in Kent, UK)...etc. Can the buyer get over the fact that they're buying a Taiwanese horn? It's not the same as getting a horn "Made In China" even if they are neighbours. Taiwan unfortunately still hasn't established themselves for reliability or high degree of QC as the Koreans and Japanese have decades ago in everything they make.
He's not playing the Eastman here. Looks like a gold plated Mark VI...and Eastman opened up their own saxophone factory. They're really trying to distinguish themselves from the other Taiwanese horns.
