    Check out my review of the Helko Vario 2000 Heavy Log Splitter. I've had my eye on this item for a couple years now. It's a Heavy-Duty Log Splitter that currently costs around $144.00 This tool is unlike anything you will find in a hardware store or big box store. The ergonomic handle is made of American Hickory and the head is C45 High Carbon Steel. The tool also includes a premium leather sheath and bottle of Axe-Guard Oil.
    I am very impressed with this tool and highly recommend it. I mention that it's a higher priced axe however, it's worth it. There are certainly other axes that cost more and others in the hardware store that are much less. I plan on keeping this splitter for the rest of my life. It get a double thumbs-up rating! Please leave your comments and if you find this video interesting, help support this channel by giving it a THUMBS UP. Thanks for watching!

    I'm hoping to pick up one of these soon as well. Thanks for putting together the review! I'm old school like you and prefer using an axe to a hydraulic log splitter.

    Wow, a video review that is 90% actually using the product. I think you just broke the internet.
    I'm thinking about buying either the Vario 2000 Universal Axe or the Universal Hatchet, as a pack axe for days out in the woods. I want the 30" axe, but I can't decide if it will be to much to lug around.

      markthomasbuilder This splitter is awesome. I have some knotty oak rounds that I was saving for the hydraulic splitter and this got the job done with some of the toughest pieces. I am not a fan of lacquered handles so I sanded it down and applied some boiled linseed oil. While it was apart, I also dipped the head end of the handle in BLO so it would penetrate deep into the holes drilled for bit attachment. I love the shape of the handle and will be using this a lot. My only concern is whether or not the handle will split as a result of having the two holes drilled in it. Only time will tell. Hoping she holds up and becomes another axe I can hand down to my son. Beautiful piece, thanks again for sharing !!

    Hey mark, love your videos.
    I have an advice for splitting heavy pieces if the maul or axe gets stuck: instead of trying to extract it or using the head of the axe as a wedge it is super efficient to lift both the axe and the piece of wood and go again turning everything uspide down so you hit the base block with the back of the axe and the wood is facing you. If Newton's third law is correct (and it is) the impulsive force passes through the maul and should split it pretty easily.
    Thank you for yhe attention, and good morning from Italy

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you from watching from Italy! I appreciate your advice and have tried that when I'm running out of options for getting my maul unstuck. I also keep some twisted splitting wedges nearby. Those work well too.

    C45 carbon steel is the European designation for American 1045 carbon steel, which is a MEDIUM carbon steel. A good choice for tools to be used in very cold area, tough yet able to maintain a decent edge.

    if you had to choose between this Helko and the Oschenkopf maul you reviewed earlier, which one would it be? did you notice a difference in quality and design effectiveness? thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a tough question. They both are awesome! The Helko Vario 2000 Heavy Log Splitter is my favorite Helko product and the Universal Forestry Axe is my favorite Ochsenkopf product. I'm going to have to make a maul shootout video sometime soon and see if I can determine a winner between the two. The Vario 2000 can then take on the winner of the mauls for another video. Thanks for spurring some video ideas for me!

    Hi, I've recently been watching some of your videos and I believe you mentioned an upcoming review on the helko black forest woodworker axe. I am very interested on your thoughts for this tool. How would you say it fares as a general camp axe, more specifically for splitting wood? I currently lug around a cold steel pipehawk, but I would like a bigger axe head to split larger logs with more ease.

    I'd love to see an update and a head-to-head comparison like you mentioned in other comments. How does this compare to the Helko and Ochsenkopf mauls when splitting nastier pieces? My main concern/hesitation is the bolt attachment. How has that held up over the year you've had it? Any loosening?

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the grind seems well thought out, but otherwise... what a baffling design

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought it was a gimmick at first, but it's really one of my favorite mauls for splitting the big stuff. The only thing it can't do is drive wedges.

    • @toolthoughts
      @toolthoughts 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really seems effective in that role with that bit attached. But I'm going to go with gimmick here still. Supposedly the system allows for easy blade changes, but who would really fiddle and screw on different bits while doing splitting? You'd have different axes or mauls if the need came up frequently. It's not really the tool for other kind of work, felling, carving, limbing etc, either. You want a neutrally balanced head for control, it's not just a bit shape issue. The construction seems to me part marketing and part cheaper manufacturing (you only have to forge/machine half of a traditional axe head) - whilst a regular full head will always be inherently stronger, possibly more secure. And you're not tied to the proprietary handle design if you have to re-haft. You'll just pick the right length from the nearest hardware store. Unless you want to make your own, which is equally easy with both.
