    What a masterly batting display by Kallicharran , Lille had no clue , he really mastered Lille , it certainly was a gem of an Innings and that too without Helmet

    Radio commentary: would describe the batsman's stance, the bowler's ru up and delivery, the stroke. Even the missed stroke outside off was described in detail. And we listeners adjusted our stance to face the next ball.

    Lillee really 'lost it' in this match, bowling the same or similar stuff over after over, despite being thumped repeatedly to the boundary. Alvin Kallicharran was something else. Lovely style.

      I played some minor league cricket in England and I do not bowl fast but the wicket was so conducive to swing bowling that it i was swinging like terry alderman. Great players perform in all conditions that is my point in my opinion Dennis LIlee was good but only in favorable conditions.

    • @simonboughey5246
      @simonboughey5246 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bhuddababajee Hi, thanks very much for your reply. I love talking cricket. I never played minor league cricket, so you're better than I, but I played club cricket in the Surrey league as a medium pace seam bowler. So let's look at the stats: Lillee took 355 wickets in 70 matches at 23.9 per wicket - that's in all conditions. McGrath took 563 wickets in 124 matches at 21.6 per wicket so a better average but a worse strike rate than Dennis. Lillee also is in the list of the top takers of fivefers in the history of the game, along with SF Barnes, Kapil Dev, Steyn and a couple of others. Pretty good company. Again, in many conditions. You can't rack up figures like that if you can only bend it round corners when it's a bit humid overhead. He was also two bowlers into one. He was really really fast in his early years - much quicker than McGrath ever was, and then after a back injury rebuilt himself as a bowler with a mastery of cut and seam - which McGrath could never do - and was still pretty quick. Lillee bowled superlatively well in England and Australia, which offer a great variety of conditions. Now he didn't do well in his four Tests in the subcontinent it's true, but four Tests isn't much to be judged on and they were heavily doctored pitches to nullify him. This is not to say McGrath was not a great bowler, he was, but he didn't have as many tools in his locker. He was tall, got good bounce, ridiculously accurate and seamed it. But any bowler will tell he's not entirely sure which way a ball seams. To cut it and swing it, you've got to know. I'd probably want them both in my all time Aus XI, but DK Lillee would be one of the first names on the sheet.

    • @Bhuddababajee
      @Bhuddababajee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My point is a great player will perform everywhere because they can adapt their game to the conditions they are in. I do not see that in Denis Lilee because he never performed under alien conditions. I do not know if you are fan of Boycott but I am a big fan. He performed everywhere as a batsman.

      You might want to do some actual statistical research. DK was very successful against the mighty West Indies. They played them every 2nd summer in Australia. Lillee was the most successful bowler against them & he dismissed Viv Richards 9 times in Tests and 7 times in WSC SuperTests. He was leading wicket taker in WSC, with 67 wkts against the West Indies & World XI. In one of those WSC SuperTests at the SCG, DK took 7/23 in an innings against them. Andy Roberts was 2nd with 50. DK was the 1st bowler to take 100 ODI wkts @20.82, retired the Test World Record Holder & took 12/92 in a 1 off Test against a World XI & took 85 Test wkts in a Calendar Year. That record still stands as the highest tally by a fast bowler. Tony Cosier rated Lillee as the best fast bowler to ever tour the Carribean. Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd, Andy Roberts & Joel Garner rate DK, as the best bowler of their era. Easily the greatest.
