It’s because the value of the coco leaves (to make cocaine) is 1000x lower in the country of origin than the street value in USA. So it’s literally cheaper to buy all the leaves off the farmers and stop the supply chain to the drug lords
I am impressed by how the US Coast Guard snipes the boat's engines, and not its crew. No movies are made about the Coast Guard. It doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Not only smuggling patrols, but also search & rescue, hurricane relief, or helping boats that run out of fuel, the US Coast Guard does so many things that benefit real people. Its not because there are 2 vastly simpler solutions not in this videos. 1. Bribe the right people. 2. Manufacture the drugs locally. I am no expect but I highly suspect most of the high tech smuggling to the US in this video is now mostly about avoiding other cartels not avoiding border patrol.

They are not perfect replacements and there is still demand for the plant based ones but they have pushed the drug market further from being bottle necked by intradiction. I have never seen breaking bad. I am sadly a stimulant and opioid addicit. Although a few years sober.
The torpedoes are extremely brilliant!! Using them is even smarter than using fully autonomous torpedoes because they simply hitch a free ride most of the distance, saving fuel and the valuable space onboard for fuel. Absolutely brilliant! If I were them, I'd just attach the empty torpedoes to ships to get them back home to reuse them. Once ships hulls are all inspected via scuba divers, they'll have to use fully autonomous torpedoes that'll make the entire trip without risking anyone being caught, or even being paid to smuggle the goods.

You know, I really hope they built in under-water-cameras into these torpedoes. I mean, you could get soo many cool pictures of beautiful, strange, rare or even unknown sea residents. You could sell your findings for a little pocket money or hang em up your wall. Don't waste such an opportunity

I knew about most but not the torpedo. That is insane. It makes sense they have all this once you think about it. These people have SO much money. They have a problem? Throw more money at it!
You will never stop smuggling provided what is being smuggled is desired on one side of any given border. Borders are like sieves and there are hundreds of ways to cross them. On the water, outside the 24 mile contiguous limit the Coast Gard cannot operate so as long as you stay 30 miles out you cannot be legally stopped. One low tech method that has been used since the 1800's which still works is salt bags. You make your cargo up so it is buoyant and will float. The item is then tied to a flour bag or a similar bag which is full of a premeasured amount of salt. When you reach your drop point you throw your cargo overboard where it will sink to the bottom. The salt can now leach out of the bag and the time is dependent on the coarseness of the bags material and the amount of salt placed in it. You do testing prior to dropping any cargo to get the time that something will need to resurface. The cargo can be made to surface in a few hours to 24 hours or more and your accomplice just happens to be there when it comes up. If your accomplice is stopped with the cargo they can claim they spotted it coming up so they retrieved it and were taking it in to hand it over to the authorities. There are certain groups of folks on the east coast near new England who have been using this method for years to bring in cheap grain alcohol from St. Pierre Miquelon which is part of France.
Can you do one on the counter-smuggling boats? I've seen some crazy unmarked 1000+ HP boats here on the coast of BC, Canada with FLIR thermal cameras on top

You will never stop smuggling provided what is being smuggled is desired on one side of any given border. Borders are like sieves and there are hundreds of ways to cross them. On the water, outside the 24 mile contiguous limit the Coast Gard cannot operate so as long as you stay 30 miles out you cannot be legally stopped.
One low tech method that has been used since the 1800's which still works is salt bags. You make your cargo up so it is buoyant and will float. The item is then tied to a flour bag or a similar bag which is full of a premeasured amount of salt. When you reach your drop point you throw your cargo overboard where it will sink to the bottom. The salt can now leach out of the bag and the time is dependent on the coarseness of the bags material and the amount of salt placed in it. You do testing prior to dropping any cargo to get the time that something will need to resurface. The cargo can be made to surface in a few hours to 24 hours or more and your accomplice just happens to be there when it comes up. If your accomplice is stopped with the cargo they can claim they spotted it coming up so they retrieved it and were taking it in to hand it over to the authorities. There are certain groups of folks on the east coast near new England who have been using this method for years to bring in cheap grain alcohol from St. Pierre Miquelon which is part of France.
