  • Whta's up railfans! I went all the way to Rochester new york just to watch trains. It was a great time my first spot was Fairport New York where virtual railfan has a camera there. then we head over to the Rochester Amtrak station to see if via rail comes in to America. our next spot we head over to the waterfall in Rochester and watch Amtrak cross it. then I went to go see if Rochester and southern was running. then we go see portgagevilxle bridge in letchworth state park.
    PLACES
Rochester is a city on Lake Ontario, in New York State. Old industrial buildings cluster near the Genesee River’s High Falls. A vast collection of toys and dolls forms the core of the Strong National Museum of Play. The George Eastman Museum, on the early-1900s estate of the Kodak founder, has photography exhibits, film archives and gardens. Rochester Museum & Science Center has hands-on displays and a planetarium.
Fairport is a village located in the Town of Perinton, which is part of Monroe County, New York, United States. Fairport is a suburb 9 miles east of Rochester. It is also known as the "Crown Jewel of the Erie Canal". In 2005, it was named as one of the "Best Places to Live" by Money Magazine.
Letchworth State Park is a 14,427-acre New York State Park located in Livingston County and Wyoming County in the western part of the State of New York. The park is roughly 17 miles long, following the course of the Genesee River as it flows north through a deep gorge and over several large waterfalls.
    RAIL LINES
The Rochester Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of New York. The line runs from Solvay, New York, west to Churchville, New York, along the former New York Central Railroad water level route.
The Southern Tier Line is a railroad line owned and operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway in the U.S. states of New York and Pennsylvania.

The reason it says 97/64 is because, it is the Amtrak/Via Maple Leaf. It is a partnership train between Amtrak and Via, that runs from New York to Toronto. From New York to Niagara Falls, its Amtrak train 64, and after Niagara Falls when it crosses into Canada, the crew changes to a Via Rail crew and it becomes Via train 97, but with Amtrak equipment. So that is why it says Via Rail. Also, the Rochester & Southern runs only a couple trains a day, and doesnt run on Saturday. Every day except Saturday, there is a road train that departs Brooks Ave Yard around 10-11 AM and goes to Silver Springs or Mount Morris. On some days, there is also a local that will depart a bit later that goes sometimes down to Dansville. This local usually has CN or CP or other foreign power going to American Motive Power in Dansville, so it is the coolest train on the R&S. But if you want to for sure see a train, go to the yard around 10-11 for the road train. It runs every day except Saturday. And for the NS Southern Tier line, theres only around 6 trains a day on average. 264/265 intermodal and 310/311 and 315/315 manifests. They mostly come in the morning from what I have heard. So if you ever come back keep that in mind

I am an old guy,83. who went to the University of Rochester as an under graduate and grad student during the entire 1960's. I frequently use to ride the New York Central between NYC and Rochester. I did a lot of train watching back then. The Central still had mail trains of baggage cars, E-units pulled all the passenger trains and F-3's and 7's were on freight. Wooden cabooses were still around as were Alco RS-3's in the Goodman Street yards. A fellow railfan and I were at the station as the last westbound Empire State Express stopped in Rochester. I also saw the last run of the westbound Twentieth Century Limited comming through the Linden Ave curve in the middle of the night. She was slowing heading toward the city with sparks around each wheel from the brakes. In those days, the B&O, Pennsy and Erie-Lackawana came into town. Thanks for the fine video Sir . Brought back some memories. I'm in Arizona now...much warmer...lol.

I had lectures to give in Toronto. So I took the Maple Leaf from NYP to TOR all day Friday, and returned all day Monday. Lecture final prep on the way up, relaxed one day vacation with great scenery on the way back.

Thanks for the video's new sub here and so far love the content you have. The NS southern tier line is a hit and miss line for sure bummer that you did not see any trains over that bridge in Letchworth. I used to do a lot of rail fanning along both of those lines you filmed nice to see local videos, I'm between Rochester and Buffalo so ya both have some nice scenery track side for sure hope you come back up this way again with better luck on the Southern Tier line.

There are three tracks at Fairport. The two furthest away from the viewing platform are the CSX Rochester Subdivision. The track closest to the viewing platform is the CSX West Shore Subdivision, which is a bypass to the south of Rochester, which hopefully avoids congestion in downtown Rochester at the yard.
