Harbor Freight, gotta love em eh. About eight years ago I purchased a pneumatic Harbor Freight flooring nailer. It was on sale and I used a twenty percent off coupon too making it 99 bucks. After I finished nailing down my flooring in the 20 by 12 room, I sold the nailer on Craigslist for 85 bucks and it went fast too. Just a thought - good luck and thanks for the entertainment and experience. My first comment BTW after watching for nearly two years ...

Wow, simple 2x4 jig, so smart! Mike Morgan's the guy with great tips on how to get things done smarter, not harder. I honestly don't think I would have thought of that. I also don't know that insulation was needed there, but I've never seen a heated floor install. Pushing the shovel is the best tool there I guess, the shale you put there is hard digging for sure. Don't hurt your back my friend, I need another few thousand videos from you! Outdoors With The Morgans is my #1 favorite channel, life without you would be bad. Mike as handy as you are. Hand digging will give you the best results. Working with my Dad as a cemetery caretaker. He showed me how to use 4' boom shovel. Being right handed hold the shovel flat on the ground. Rest your hands against your legs and lean forward to fill the shovel. Your arms won't get tired. Once you try it, it becomes natural. Enjoy your channel. You're doing a fantastic jib!

Mike, I cut foam board with a knife like you until a friend told me to get a foam cutting hot wire knife. They are inexpensive. Plug it into 110v, the blade gets hot, lay down a straight edge on the foam, run the knife along the straight edge, and you get a perfect cut very rapidly. With all that you have to cut, it would be a very inexpensive way to improve quality and speed! HF has them as do many other stores.

Hello Mike- 3”x16” perimeter wall insulation is fine. You need to consider, cutting out 2” in the floor area and install 2” rigid board in the slab. I’ve done a dozen or so houses and works shops like that. One one was done without insulation, the floor hardly gets warm. Rigid foam down, strap tubing on the board and pour 4” inches of concrete. Have plenty of zones, in case of future failure. Good luck. Consider using a outdoor boiler for heater and also install a 150k acoil with blower. It’ll heat it up quick then let the water take over to maintain.

Absolutely do the HF Plate compactor. Similar situation here back when I did a huge paver patio and walk around the side of the house. Also compacted my trenches for the Pavestone retaining walls around the back garden. Starting and stopping as time became available. Would have cost a fortune to rent one multiple times.
That was a dozen years ago. I've been loaning it out to various friends and co-workers ever since. Zero issues with it and it worked great. I think it's at a retired co-worker's new house in Wyoming right now. Don't really care as he gets to store it and move it out the way. BTW, buy one those HF wooden dollies at the same time for moving it around the shop. Maybe I'll bring it back to CO one of these days and put it on Craigslist. Watch for sales and coupons, probably save another $100. Keep up the good work. I've got about 900 days left before retirement and hopefully doing a lot more of the things you're doing right now, including the building.

I grew up with a heated basement floor in the house my dad built. He bent and used 1" hot water pipes under the concrete. Nobody had heard of that at the time but no one could wait to get their boots off and walk on it when we came in from the cold. It pretty much heated the whole house. We made sure to heat the entire floor area when we reno'd our house now in Estonia. Our houses in Sweden only have heated bathroom floors and electric baseboard heat which is WiFi controlled but it's not as effective (or as inexpensive) as entire area floor heating.

I think I suggested it before but you need to put in steel pipes with cement in them as door jamb protectors.

Mike.... did you know they make a cutter for cutting that insulation...;... probably will find it a train shop... they use it for train layouts...... it works slick as a whistle It burns through using a thin wire hooked to electricity....and it is quick

Those plate tempers are nice. I just bought one myself. Looked at the HF ones as well. Only reason I did not was the ability to get a pad for it. They don’t have one and nobody makes one. I purchased one from Amazon that is 7hp more compaction than the hf model and we are doing porcelain tile pavers with it. If you’d like I can send you the info on the one I purchased. Just something to think about (future projects) for the investment.

My plan is to buy some of that hardy concrete board and rip them in half and then rip some osb about a foot wide. Did the out side and inside down deep enough. Add the osb to the 2x6s on the inside then caluk and install the hardy board outside and finish off with a thin set of cement mix and woven mesh. This will create a concrete look that once I pour the attached graded sidewalk all around the building it will be flush against that and the only gap showing will be about 1.5 inches under the metal trim. The inside I will install the foam board all around the building and the posts. then back fill, tamp and put in the foam board for the floors and place in rebar and or mesh and pour. This should create a cement wall to where nothing will eat its way inside.

Always those jobs on a project that require hand digging. Just have to get down and do it. Looking good. Snow is almost gone here in southern Minnesota, and talking highs in the 60’s next week. Spring has sprung.

I have one of the Horrible Freight plate compactors, I love it. It's great for those homeowner jobs. Definitely pick one up!
