I wonder how it is that TH-cam has not suggested your videos to me until now. Anyway, nice start and looking forward to the rest!

I subscribed a couple days ago and kept saying "man, this guy should start making videos, a lot of people would watch" and sure enough a few days later I see a video released. Awesome to see your face on your own channel!

Thanks! It has been a while in the making! It has changed the way I do things at my shop, which is good.

Huge fan of your casual delivery, so uncommon with skilled craftsmen and classical musicians who tend to be very smug and technical. Keep it coming!

It's the sign of true tradesman. There's no need to be a snob when spend 8 hours per day hard at work. Even when you're famous, you're not some hoity toity artist who can produce some ugly ass, useless product with minimal effort and call it art, youl have to apply yourself to each product you make, and that gives you a level of humility.
I've done an internship with a guy who builds high end vocal processors, in the 4-5000 euro range, exclusively with radio tubes and passives in the signal path. He's similarly casual when he explains how things work. Unlike hifi-LP player sellers, he won't try to convince you that high end electrical components make a world of difference either, because most of them don't, and he'd pretty much encourage me to use whatever was cheapest for my projects, unless I intended to sell them, in that case it makes sense to splurge on certain components and quality of life things, like the feel of the buttons/knobs and material of the boxes.

Saw you on Brandon’s channel and low and behold you’ve got a new video. So far I’ve only ever made “junk” instruments like can banjos and cigar box guitars so this will definitely help me expand what little knowledge I have about making instruments. Awesome vid

This was an absolute delight to watch! I subscribed after watching your video with Rob Scallon exactly in the hopes of seeing more luthiery video from you.
You are so knowledgeable and skillful and talented and an absolute joy to watch. As the son of a joiner and an avid woodworker, this has made my week.
Looking forward to more videos! Keep up the good work!

Thank you! This is a new venture for me, and I am excited to keep this ip for at least this build, if not more!

I always wanted to build my own guitar. Putting my own blood, sweat and tears into it. Literally and metaphorically. A drop of blood, a drop of sweat and a tear mixed into a thimble, press my thumb in the mix and press the wood, leave the thumbprint and seal it under the finish. As gross as that sounds, to me it makes sense given how much emotion is put into the music it makes. I am sure in the building process it'll happen anyway hahah. Love the content and I am so glad you and Rob crossed paths. I may have never found this channel otherwise. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. I've been obsessed with the making of instruments, especially guitars.

Just subbed Marshall after Robs TH-cam algos disappeared for me and mysteriously reappeared again nearly a year later.
You are a great builder/instructor and enjoyed this collaboration with Rob.
I love guitars but just can’t master playing them….but admire your mastery.

Just watched your video with Rob Scallion. I really enjoyed watching your mastery as a luthier. I also was really impressed with the way you led Rob through the process in a calm and encouraging manner. In addition to being a wonderful luthier it’s clear you’re a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your process.

I have too many hobbies, so to keep my list low I told myself I'd only start guitar if I learned how to build one myself. Lo and behold, it looks like an incredibly fun and rewarding process, so here comes another hobby.

I'm getting started making instruments... Starting with a lyre, applying concepts I see here, stuff like grain direction, thickness and bracing.
Whats funny is I mostly started playing classical guitar because I couldn't find a good lute, but also my dad and bro play guitar so I figured I'd pick it up.
But overall I'm really into early instruments. I think right now if I had to choose only one instrument to learn to make and make forever, it would probably be the Viola da Gamba.
Planning to start with ancient instruments but add modern understanding of bracing and sound mechanics.

Hi Marshall, DOn't know if you will ever see this, but I just wanted to say how much I loved seeing you on Brandon's and Rob's channels, which led me here. I'm an amateur steel string guitar maker, and I am in awe of your ability. Thank you so much for being out there on TH-cam, and I am really looking forward to exploring your channel.

I imagine a lot of people who would like to do this have not the tools, instruments, materials. Is it common at all for luthiers to take in apprentices?

Hey Marshall, was introduced to you by Brandon Acker. I traded my $1300 Godin for a $200 Valencia 404. (I actually love the difference in sound and feel and resonance, i cant put it down)
Curious of 'Frankensteining' the guitar to get intonations perfect. Example high E on the 8th fret is flat by -8 tuning in 444 munich.
Is it possible to 'peen' or file frets into tune or have a modified frets for each string? Or perhaps its the saddle that needs micro adjusting? On high E.

Get a set of plans from Strad magazine, and use that as a starting point. I usually make my molds 10-12mm thick.

You're just getting started so don't worry too much about the views but there is a massive market on TH-cam for people who are experts in their field making videos about how they do it. You can easily blow up doing this! Best of luck sir! Ill be watching the whole way.
