The Joys Of Allotment Gardening: Let's Focus On The Good Stuff!

  • The allotment is very much behind this year due to many issues. It's by far the worst growing season yet. But despite this, we're going to carry on and stay positive. This week's update is full of good positive vibes. After all, gardening and growing my own food is my hobby so it only makes sense that I enjoy it and not stress over it! I'm going to be much more relaxed about failures and just accept that we may not get harvests from every crop this year.
At least we are harvesting SOME crops though.. like the elephant garlic, lettuce, courgettes, strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, finally some sweet peas, and a (little) bit of broccoli... but still a harvest nonetheless!
There are some crops which will soon be ready such as the cabbages!
How's things looking for you in July? have things improved? it's crazy to think we only have around 6 weeks left and then we will be packing things up for winter!

You know what I like about you, Jim? You are honest! Your last video showed a true gardener who is battling with all that nature can throw at them and despite the anguish you return today and just L👀K at what you have harvested! Well done mate. You are an inspiration.

I lost my Dad this Easter 94 yrs young. Worked on a farm as a young boy and had a allotment for 50yrs. He always said that gardening is about patience and mother nature is in control. Keep up the good work because season's come around again.

Weather doesn’t care how experienced we are Mother Nature just kicks butt 🤦‍♀️. Wow you look just like your dad ❤ bless him. He’s correct if gardening was easy everyone would do it but it’s only us nutters keep at it 😂. I think we are on the total opposite end of the scale, it’s been far too hot and NO rain since mid June and none in sight. Scary thing is even with all the garden centres and blueberry 🫐 farms in our area we have very very few bees 🐝. Keep your chin up and keep at it you’ve got this Jim 👍👍, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦

Don't feel down. We (I'm sure as growers - I have a tiny garden) are all feeling the same. I'm seeing news about up and coming food shortages (farmers are warning) and us being urged to grow our own food. I feel sooo frustrated because that's what I'm trying to do!!!! So, I've had some successes and some failures. My plan now is to clear the crappy, spindly stuff and start on Winter veg. It's all I can do/hope for.

@@downtoearthwithjim so I usually just scatter marigold seeds and usually they do well ! Nothing this year and I did some orange boy in trays but they got eaten. My tomatoes were mountain magic. They have put on a bit of growth so got my fingers crossed. I’ve got two big daddies in the greenhouse , they are doing okish ! My potatoes, peas and strawberries have been great. Raspberries rubbish , carrots looking good . I think generally things are picking up, hoping for an Indian summer . Thanks for asking 😀

Don't worry Jim, it's my very first year growing and it had to be like this! Imagine my disappointment but I'm trying to focus on the positives too. I've got loads of lettuce, kale, mustard leaves, peas, broadbeans and kohlrabi growing well and also had a decent strawberry crop. All my summer veg is way behind though, only have a few tiny tomatoes appearing recently, no fruit on any pepper and chilli plants, just flower buds. Same with aubergines, just some flowers no fruit yet. Beans have just started to flower. Not sure if I'll get anything from these plants this year but I'll try again next year.

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Honestly so similar for me this year. Only just picking tomatoes myself. That's gutting for your first year but just try and learn what you can from it and next year will hopefully be better! Or you can make it better by taking what you learnt this year 😊

Very nearly lit the fire the other day. Berries are going well, toms starting to flower and my climbing beans suddenly made an appearance. Plenty of water still in the water butts so overall, things could be worse. Mother nature is still watering regularly here in the Yorkshire Dales .

Yes had my heating on and lost most of my veggies to slugs and the cold. Im in the north west of England. I went down to south London last weekend to see some friends, and their veggies were doing much better than mine. I actually gave them the seedlings when they were up here in April. Interesting what difference 250 miles south makes!?

Glad to hear you're getting over it, I'm in the same boat just across the pond though.
Planted the transplants then we got a heat wave lost a lot of tomatoes and peppers.
The winter squash and pumpkins germination was sparse , I was ready to start the tractor and rototill the whole garden but decided to till the dead space and get it ready for fall planting.
Have a great day and hope you get some better weather!

Like you I had multiple crop failures with carrots, couldn't figure out why. Somehow I do have carrots growing, and it feels like a tiny triumph.
We had heat, long and hot weather so the opposite, trying to get things cooled down
Pak Choy went immediately to seed, one set of true leaves. 😳
Berries were a bit sparse, but what I did get were wild strawberries, they're very tiny but wow what flavour. Unexpected, but I'll take it.

id say the temps been very nice low to mid 20's yesterday hit 28-29c tho hottest so far in west Midlands. had a bit issue with blight on my tomatoes so about 6 out 8 plants been really chopped right down and basically starting again but i have had one dog bowl of tomatoes so had something and at same time i thought i move them outside they get a good breeze what should help and that opened up a good part green house so i moved some my chili and pepper plants in that spot but i do need to move one what in far corner as not enough air circulation but 14 types most seem to be doing well but have had a slight hold on flowers but now ive finished with table in there i feel i might have one row either side green house and that prob make more better air flow and move a few around as they are a bush type some are. i did try one hottest in the world or dam close one yesterday even tho it was not ready and wow the smallest bit it burned for ages bit size grain rice one is almost fully ready but i think i need a plan to do something with them, but how hot they are it take me years to use them, maybe a powder. the most oddest chili plant i got the chili's are purple surprisingly they hotter than i thought they be but just right. so green house i think i need to divide them a bit so better air flow. 2nd batch parsnips have started to grow and 3rd batch carrots poking through and 2nd batch they at size i need separate them thin them out as they about 20-30cm tall and they only been in prob just over a month but learned my lesson from first batch they all spaced out so they should be bigger this time. the salad stuff seems to be doing great in this cooler weather so happy about that about 8 trays all types and few cress. and off topic in the conservatory im having the best year yet for my cacti flowing. so things over all not bad lost some but overall a lot still doing ok but i do need to get a net as a butterfly eating or putting holes in my salad leaves spotted it today. think we all had fails this year but keep on planting something go right if you keep at it, lot tomatoes and chili/pepper plants are taking there time to ripen but think everyone in same boat till we get a good few weeks sunny weather, long range say i could stay a bit like this till 5th it may continue it may not we may get warm end aug well fingers crossed

It’s a bit of gardening Jim, sounds to me like you’ve lost the joy of seeing things grow and develop,of marvelling at how nature creates and thieves in even the most difficult of situations. Maybe it’s time to sep back and rekindle that joy.
