I freaking love mine. It's my daily driver. The build is more robust than you think. And they don't leak sound hardly at all. I like this so much more than the 58x or the 6xx. I run them balanced out of my Jotenheim2 on low power with D30Pro balanced into the Jotenheim2. And they're non-fatiguing.
@@TranceHistorian YOu can't lose. Some called them "boring". They're perfect. Lots of texture in the bass region that the Sennheisers don't have. I've got 1200 hours on mine and they sound better than ever. There is no downside at this price or even up to $300. They don't really make any mistakes. It's a great time to be alive as a headphone audiophile.
I bought these several months ago, and I have been using them at work. Because the headphones I had were ancient Yamaha YH1 - they were not comfortable anymore, and their sound has either deteriorated or it is not as good a newer headphones. I need open back headphones and lightweight and to be relatively comfortable. They are neutral-ish - they seem to only have sins of omission; rather than sins of commission? I *have* cut out the layer of foam and cloth in the pads - relatively carefully, with good scissors. ;-) They get the job done, but lack anything "special" that draws you into the music. They have enough deep bass, and enough detail, and decent soundstage, as mentioned. I think the yokes are metal? And the internal structure of the headband also seems to be metal? But yes, the rest is plastic.
Who builds loudspeakers wrapped in foam? Maybe JBL L100 and many, many more? There is a thing called acoustically transparent foam, don't know is this has the good kind tho... I love my Philips too, BTW.
Some first morning love Randy! I love the fresh foam i put on my German MBQuart 55x’s. The old foam was flat as a pancake. Sound quality is outstanding and they’re very comfortable as which is awesome as I use them allot as reference headphones. Peace 🇺🇸🤘
This guy is so depressing lmao, not everyone listens to punk and rock. Saying headphones are trash just because they don't fit your music style. Reminds me of people who have said that sennheiser sounds veiled before, yet there are millions of people who love the sound of them... And they don't even have foam in the ear cups so that's irrelevant 😂
Great video. Thank-you! "Without plastic, life itself would be impossible." Hopefully, the foam used inside a headpone ear cup would be " acoustically transparent" (as much as possible). The Sony set I have (noise xcling WH series) have foam to help pad the ear from the driver mechanism. (They are only moderately comfortable with extended wear.) I wish the foam was thicker lol.
1. Maybe the intention of the earpad was for us who live up north, this might be the "Snowblower Edition" 2. I would like to know what your co-host thought of the product (fuzzy). I haven't had a fuzz join a video yet, mine is usually a 10 foot eyebrow that seemingly grew overnight...
Chalk up another great vid from "The Cheap Audio Man!" Those look pretty nice but I think I'll just stick with MY all plastic ATH-M50X headphones from Audio-Technica. 🤘🏻
Ima not getting Instagram for anyone. I've tried tons of headphones but always go back to my Senheisiers. I've stopped wasting my money trying to replace them.
Yeah, once you find something you like, it doesn’t make any sense to keep searching. I’m sure we’ve all done it with something or other, but it is a poor use of time and money.
Good morning ☕️ Randy. I compare any headphone in my stable to my OG Sen’s 650’s. HiFiman feels like it’ll break every time I pick them up and my AUDEZE LCDX (2021) tho are heavy ..they feel like they’re built like a tank! Great video as usual.☕️👍👍
I've cooled towards my Senn HD6xx. I'm not thrilled with how they are made. To me they feet creaky. At some point a piece of plastic fell off the headband and I can't find it to put it back. I'm not rough at all in handling my headphones. The foam used to cover the driver is deteriorating after about 5 years. My two Hifiman headphones fare better. With just having to replace the earpads and removing the peeling pleather from the underside of the headband. The point to all this is tou can but an he400se for less money and it's better built than the Senn or Ghost I imagine.
I got these for $90, build quality is excellent at its price point. Headband and yokes are all metal in one piece. The plastic is robust and mine don’t rattle at all. The build quality is fine at its price point. The sound quality isn’t the greatest. It’s warm and dark, super mellow. I use sennheiser pads with no sound damping. They are ok, good not great. But for the price, it is a solid buy.
I swapped the pads on day one for meze 109 per Z Review advice. With that mod they're pretty good. Not quite so resolving as my HD600 but way better bass.
Same, I'm one of the few who got the 109 pads for the Ghost and I actually really enjoy these a lot. I also really enjoy my 6xx on an OTL tube amp and both get tons of ear time from me. I can agree with Randy's general sentiment and understand why he didn't want to review them outside of their stock state but I'm glad I decided to try them out.
The design and manufacture of iems, which is what they're good at, is vastly different than doing the same with headphones. I'm assuming these are injection molded, which is its own separate animal when you're coming from 3D resin printing.
Grado has been putting pads similar to this on a lot of their headphones for decades. Not that that necessarily makes this an awesome idea--Grado's higher-end options all have a hollow center on the earpad I think. But their signature model that made them famous has some thick foams for sure.
Off-topic, The Gerber Mark II was my combat knife. It is evil incarnate, that knife, Unfortunately, sometime in the early eighties, they stopped making them with Solingen steel and imported Chinese steel to make their knives. I've been carrying Kershaw knives exclusively since 1982, and they last forever. They are particular about their sharpening stones, though. Best just buy the thirty dollar kershaw stone and go on with your business. And don't get me started on changing the pads on the Airmotiv GR1s. You damn near need a physics degree.
When you clicked it open at about a minute in I clicked the link and saw what a deal it was. I need a new knife for work anyway so I thought, why not kill two birds with one stone? Thanks for the heads up on bad things to. I appreciate the headphone reviews

Not a fan of headphones in general. Too uncomfortable, gets hot, a pain for eyeglass wearers. That said, my first headphone was the old Sennheiser 414 {?}, with the light simple foam pads. My current is a Sennheiser 477. I think headphones are great for being analytical. Give me two good speakers with dual subs for enjoying the music.
Hey hey hey! My 180s (ear coverings) have earbud type pockets built in for those sport type on ear units. At least they have thin cloth between, not foam. (Never used those pockets anyway)
The headphones that got me through high school around the turn of the millennium were $40 Sony cans from Walmart. They were better built than the Theiaudio Ghosts appear to be. Probably sounded better, too. I don't like to knock companies whose products I've never used, but just based on your description here? Yeah, I would avoid them.
I had an Audiooanalog amplifier and connected a headphoneamplifier to the tape-in(or out) ! Now I have a cheap NAD amplifier without tape so how do I connect a very good headphoneamplifier ? Could you show that in a later video ??? Thanks!!!
They are, but I get where you're coming from and think it's a fair review. I love the Ghosts (with the associated pad swap) and also love the 6xx and 58x Sennheisers. All represent really great sound and value to me.@@cheapaudioman
I have a pair of Grado headphones and simply cutting out a quarter sized hole in the foam so that they look like the 225x makes them perform virtually the same. Excessive foam is bad.
Actually speakrr manufacturers did that...some of those grills were msfe out of foam. Muffed the spelling...appropriately I'm going to leave it at that
I've been satisfied with my Sennheiser 599's for years now. Flat tone and open backs.....I got them for $120. I haven't felt the need to upgrade and they have moved several times with me without issue.
