  • Keith Lee who has gained a huge following on TikTok for reviewing restaurants has now added the DMV to the list of places he has had a terrible experience with as far as the food. It's time for Keith Lee to ownership and scale up to prevent some of these things but also Black owned restaurants have been struggling for a while and it's more than just grass walls.

The restaurants who pose possible health risks to the public should be called out publicly. I don't care about protecting a black business so much that I'd screw up my gut biome. Nasty restaurants should be called out. Now not liking the food is something altogether different. But if a restaurant isn't handling food properly? Everyone should want to know. If you can't afford to open a restaurant & ensure proper food handling & cleanliness? You don't need to open a restaurant.

Thank you for this review king. I am an 80s baby who spent most of her life in DC but has been in New Orleans for the past 15 years. The DC food scene is not what it used to be and the majority of our smaller mom and pop shops that had excellent food has been pushed out due to gentrification. DC is becoming a city of the haves and have nots. You can go to lounges and get your upscale meals but your real down home good cooking we do not have the scene in DC like New Orleans has when it comes to accessibility for every day folks. I love him no less and I hate what gentrification is doing to our cities. If Keith Lee ate that food & had a reaction, he could've sued the restaurant because they did not disclose that info.

Oop at non locals recommending spots
Keith Lee recently visited Chicago and the places he went to have already been getting hype by transplants and gentrifiers as they were either in gentrifying spaces or next to gentrifying spaces. When I heard them I was like “these people don’t travel throughout the city much”
The DNC was in town and people stayed recommending Mexican spots in Pilsen where my grandparents, my mom, and I grew up and was priced out due to gentrification. The actual locals have been displaced to the outer city and the suburbs but they’re not as known bc of the city’s segregation and people not traveling outside of their gentrified areas.

We asked the opinions of Houston residents for recommendations. Furthermore, there appears to be a trend in cities such as Houston, New Orleans, and Atlanta where restaurants are prioritizing decor and ambiance over the quality of food. This shift in focus has resulted in mediocre culinary experiences at best. Additionally, these establishments often start with promising food but struggle to maintain quality as customer volume increases. Consequently, they resort to shortcuts and nickel-and-dime their customers by charging for items that are typically complimentary, such as ketchup and napkins.

Maybe add an element where you pop up in said place walking around talking to locals face to face and even then people can lie about being a local. How's he supposed to know? To have someone on the team doing this kind of work would take a lot. Other than googling the restaurants in the area and then doing your own research on when the places got there etc .... that takes out the interaction partially with the audience. I don't run any form of social media page or do content because it's a lot. Good luck to him and hopefully it gets better in the future and works out. I'm not sure of who his team is but there has got to be a better process for selection of spots and a level of discernment around social media recommendstions and actual knowledge of an area( gentrification and local history) The limited palate critique has always reeked of classism to me takeout is his chosen format is take out and that's okay ! They completely dismantled that man's attempt to be relatable. 😂😂

I can give a prime example of tiktok tax: I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I know where to eat and where not to eat. It's a pizza joint that opened up 2018 or 19ish. I tried it before the social media hype. Their plain pizza was $3 a slice, tapping $6, special toppings like shrimp or Oxtail meat $8. The pizza was okay, but it was not worth the price to me at that time. When social media started hyping them up, their $8 went to 12 a slice, their basic topping like 9. Same basic taste, but astronomical pricing.

8:10 I strongly suggest people read Kim Scott’s “radical candor” regarding providing constructive criticism and being truly honest. Brutal honesty is a cop out for being someone being rude to others under the guise of truth.

As soon as he said he was going to the DMV I knew he wasnt going to find good food. Food in the Dc area is overpriced and not good. He should've spent the week eating only in Baltimore. If he had done that, he would've had a much better experience.

I can personally tell anyone my visit to the ATL in 2021,needs a redo because I didn’t get to as many food spots as I wanted, I did enjoy VIRGILS GULLAH KITCHEN TWICE,THE LINNETHIA LOUNGE,even though those wings I received weren’t cooked fully, and another spot named SPONDIVITS which was always crowded when open‼️.. Of course the WAFFLE HOUSE had a few visits from me as well‼️🤷🏽‍♂️😂

I will never understand the Keith Lee hate. People be more upset with his reviews vs the actual restaurant with piss poor customer service & mediocre food. Us as black folks not able to take criticism so even if he provided feedback for improvement, they will get upset. Look at Milk & Honey.

Hi @KingOfReads 🙋🏾‍♀️I love your content and work. 😻Thank you for your honest feedback on Keith Lee needing too do more research. As a resident of the DMV for over 31 years we have excellent mom and pop type style of restaurants. One is Henry’s Soul Food Cafe (oxinhill Md) (Right down the street from where Taraji P Henson grew up.) Completely black owned. It started with a father and now his sons run the business. They stay packed! Especially on thanksgiving, (OMG There Sweet Potato 🙌🏾🤤🥧 omg the best!) There’s Keith & Son’s (Central Ave in Hyattsville) Another completely black owned restaurant. By another Father and his sons. They run both locations together. (Second location on MLK AVE Hyattsville). There’s Levi’s in (Largo MD) We have Blue Dolphin, 🐬 (In Crofton MD) (I know he’s allergic to shellfish but they have many entrees other than seafood to pick from.) Its white owned but understand DC we’re Chocolate City predominantly black, and we stay our black asses I there faithfully 😹 (The CrabDip 😩🤤 outta this world!). You wanna get a good slammin breakfast in the morning before work. Go to Admore Carryout on (Ardwick Ardmore Road), It’s White Owned, be we stay our black asses in there too and work there too! 😹😹or Alantic Carry out in (Glenarden MD). Ran by an Asian couple, (Their breakfast sandwiches be on point!💯💯) We have Horace & Dickies seafood In (Glenarden MD) (they have some other foods that’s not seafood.) There’s many Mom an Pop shops on H Street. There’s also The Warf it’s many food vendors there, they have allll different types of foods on their menus even dessert. The Chinese Careyout’s be slammin as well. (Especially with that mambo sauce on those fries and Fried Chicken and Fried Rice 😩Yes gawd! 🙌🏾) We have Sardis a lil Peruvian spot in Capital Heights MD) in The City there’s always Food Trucks especially around Metro Center we have alot of Federal & Government employees here, around 11am almost 12ish they be lined up. All of these restaurants I named he could’ve went too. If they weren’t already on the list. 🤦🏾‍♀️ We have a lot of great restaurants here and Mom And Pop shops…. Keith Lee is becoming a problem and especially when he hasn’t done his homework 🤦🏾‍♀️

KL is not a culinary expert, chef, or instructor. His reviews amateurish and are purely subjective. At this point he is a celebrity. Folk worship celebs so if he says the sky is green and the grass is blue, gullible folk will believe him. Moreover, it’s ridiculous to critique anything and not address negative aspects of the product. That’s ridiculous.
