  • I bought some beautiful blue green ornamental grass plants a few years ago. At $11 each, the cost adds up quickly. I don’t buy these perennials anymore. They are pretty easy to propagate!

Fascinating, thank you for this! I am going to try this with Carex Glauca, a vigorous growing grass I have. We live in Zone 4b (Minneapolis); how do you handle overwintering these plants? Just let them die off in the large container? Or is it best to have them in the ground by the time late fall rolls around?
Lastly, any particular soil to use in the trays?

For the soil, I like an organic Miracle Grow soil mix sold by Costco in the spring. (We buy about 10 bags and they last us all year.) Any loose, good quality potting soil mix should work. I keep the young grasses in our unheated hoop house over the winter. If you are working with grasses that are hardy in your zone, they should survive over the winter. I suppose you could provide a little protection if you are worried about losing them.

Thank you - this is so helpful! How long did it take for them to move from the starter trays to 4 cells and then into larger pots?

Ins say a couple months, but ai haven’t watched carefully. If you fertilize them, they’ll grow faster.

I usually buy bagged soil from Costco in the spring. It’s an “organic” Miracle Grow product, but I use it because it’s a good value, Any quality soil should work… even sand if you can keep it from drying out. I hope that helps!

The scientific name for this plant is Festuca glauca. See if this Google translated page helps.

@@fixthishouse3303 It's a great plant. I picked up a left-for-dead specimen last summer on clearance for $2. The pot had 3 dried-up clumps that were easily separated. They survived, suffered a brutal winter, and now look better than ever. It's definitely a cool-season grass.
We'll definely try to your blade-by-blade separation method later this season.
