Yep. Ww had the same results back in the day. THE max has better torque in all gears. But the V65 is a sweet highway cruiser. That 6 speed was perfectly suited for 85mph all day long.
in 1990 I had a 1986 Honda V-65 Magna. It was the most powerful bike I have owned until lately, I've always slobbered over the V-Max. Just bought the new 2020 with 0 miles on it. I have only ridden it home from the dealership approximately 1.5 miles from my home. Can't wait for the weather to get dryer! Excited to see what it's like:)
I hope you like yours as good as I do mine. Bought mine last part of August and it now has over 3,000 miles clocked. Half the miles were put on riding back from Orlando to NW Ar. Weather has been great for riding this week..
I rode both. The Vmax is the faster "straight line" bike, but the Magna is much more comfortable and handles better especially in turns. The Vmax's front end gets wobbly @ high speeds. I did not like having to get off the Vmax to refuel. Magna was an easier bike to operate and maintain. Yamaha gave me more bragging rights. Went through a back tire every season on a Vmax; sometimes 2.
Bought a 1984 V65 Sabre as a leftover in 85 after shopping around for a V-max which was in the mid 4K dollar range could not spend that kind of money for a motorcycle! At the same dealership came across the 84 V65 SABRE for $2750 owned it for 16 years that bike surprised a lot of sport bike owners ! It was considered a sleeper beat many Suzuki GS1100 and Kawasaki GPZ’s but never did race a Vmax but always wondered what the outcome would be!
I owned a '83 V65 Magna back in the early nineties and my neighbor had a '85 V-Max (1st year of production). We never raced but I did have an opportunity to ride his VMax and have to say Mr. Max felt a little faster...or at least more explosive under acceleration compared to my Magna. That said, I greatly preferred my Magna's handling and feel through the curves vs. the VMax which to me felt like it had a large hinge in the middle when cornering. Also, my neighbor installed a full aftermarket exhaust and had the carburetors dialed in for the setup which made the VMax accelerate even harder and sound amazing. My Magna's stock exhaust was somewhat flat by comparison and felt more wheelie-prone compared the the VMax which had more of a tendency to break the rear tire loose under acceleration in 1st gear. Both were entertaining motorcycles but the Magna was better-rounded imo and better suited for extended rides thanks to a more comfortable seat & riding position and greater fuel range (V'/Max ~100 miles, V65 ~ 200 miles). I also believe my 5th-generation Honda VFR800 might give my V65 a run for the money in a straight line. However, through the curves either would have a hard time keeping my VFR's tail light in sight!
Which left? Right side of the lane or left side of the lane? Coming or going? The mirror effect really confuses which side is left or right. The left is right, and right is wrong. I'm really confused...
I never had the V65 cause I bought a brand new 1982 Honda V45 Magna. I enjoyed reading about the competition of the V65 and Suzuki's VMax the next year. I enjoyed my V45 for 18 years. I wish that it never left me, but my youngest brother got it in the best up to date shape. Great Honda V45 Magna memories. Ride safe everyone and keep the shiny side up, even if you pop a wheelie 😁👌 no matter what you ride!!
I had the V45 Magna, 1st gen. It was very good. Fast enough for me. I bought a car and sold my Magna back in 1995. I told myself I didn't need to ride anymore. I now wish I had it back.
My friend had one of the first V65s in the area. When he said it would run 10s, I said, you aren't Jay Gleason and this isn't a drag strip. It still was an awesome bike.
The V65 was no slouch I know for sure since I owned one and I certainly would not have shied away from a VMax back in the 80’s with that said I wanted the VMax. Lol
V65s are still legendary motorcycles that one in the video beats 1800 suzuki m109rs. I also have another 06 vmax 1200 and a 1700 vmax I been meaning to make a video on
I had a v65 and it had all kinds of problems. Must have been a lemon. Then I had a gsxr 1100 was a great bike. I now own an 87 vmax. Love the vboost. It's formidable without the vboost too. Miss my v65 though. it was better riding then the vmax.
Rumor was the 83 V65 has what a bike mag called introductory horse power more HP than the following years of the 1100 Magna's I had an 85 V65 back in the day
I agree 100%! I wish Honda would’ve brought back the V65 in the 90’s a improved version. The VMax is a legend and rightfully so. Looks dept I’ll take the Magna and I like the rectangular headlight👍
Yep - Mr. Max did it better .... but the I think V65 Magna did it first (10.85(?) quarter-mile). :) Jay Gleason (R.I.P.) was the pilot IIRC). In the early '90s I searched and searched for an '83 Magna ... no joy. Boys were hanging on to them back then I guess .... best I could do was to find an '85. Few guys told me the '85 was tuned down a bit from the first year .... but I didn't notice! :)
I No idea who running those bikes My V65 83 had to watch 1st to 2nd no problem coming over Hit 3rd hard she would come up but not over Would come up in 4th Would come up some in 5th
That Vmax is the powered down model without Vboost putting out only 80 to 90 hp and is still beating the magna , the full powered 120 hp to the wheel version would run circles around the magna
Lame riders My 65 2nd gear shift would come over and you still needed to be over the handle bars. 3rd hit it hard would come up but not over 4th came up 5th came up a little Shift 10,500 rpm One night against a suszuki I was turning 12,000 ram when the valves floated
My zx14r would easily beat either of them... but since I sold it and only ride Harleys now... I guess it is a moot point. Except I believe one of my dynas could make it a good race against either of them. But who really cares; bikes are fun aren't they?
I highly doubt that. I drove my stock 85 V65 Sabre to a 7.45 8th mile and 11.88 1/4 mile first and only pass. Good luck getting your dynas into the 12's
i recently got a 2014 zx14r and nothing has beat it from about a 15mph roll up to 180 but my vmax 1700 can stand up to it if it catches traction i wanna do a video on them racing soon
Yep. Ww had the same results back in the day. THE max has better torque in all gears. But the V65 is a sweet highway cruiser. That 6 speed was perfectly suited for 85mph all day long.
I have an ‘86 V45 and cruises all day at 85mph no problem.
I agree, rode both, both awesome bikes, had to buy the v65 for comfort, handling and long hours of riding.38 years 72.000 miles and still riding 😊

we just got a gen 2 vmax too but it is a 2014 with 5k miles on it
Ultra Rider MX, thats is great! My ride the other day was amazing. This machine exceeded my expectations!🤗👍🏼
I have a 2016 Gen 2. I found I needed shirts with longer arms after riding it a while

Very cool thank you
That Honda commercial at the dragstrip was great
Kids today on sport bikes thinking they got the first fast bikes ever produced😂
@DILLIGAF88
But compared to new Day bikes Vmax are a Volkswagen bug. I bought a Vmax because of the hype and sold it two weeks later.
Which left? Right side of the lane or left side of the lane? Coming or going? The mirror effect really confuses which side is left or right. The left is right, and right is wrong. I'm really confused...
Ived owned both.
Like to see a 100 km roll on and see.
MaX Was great in the quarter but the sabre had some long legs!
I had a 1986 V65 1100 with a kerker 4 × 1 exhaust,it would wheelie in 2nd gear without even trying.

You've been dead inside since . Time for a yamaha R1 or hayabusa 1300R
@@hurstshiftin9873 Yes sir! Can't debate your logic.
Same here. V45 Sabre 1st gen and sold it in 2003. still miss riding. Rode a friend's v65 and got the blood pumping again. I really need to get one.
Still got mine and besides from the small main tank it's great.
My friend had one of the first V65s in the area. When he said it would run 10s, I said, you aren't Jay Gleason and this isn't a drag strip. It still was an awesome bike.
@Navy Patriot101 Someone told me Jay got paid $1000 a ride from the factories.
My step dad had a v 65 and he could ride. He would do wheelies for as long as he wanted to. He would pass cars on a two lane road doing a wheelie.
I had v- 65,and have 1st gen vmax both bikes kick ass!!
I had them both. Great bikes. Vmax just a little better. Bought a V65 in 1987 and an Vmax 1200 in 2000.
My 1978 Kawasaki 1000 LTD was a beast..
Have miles on both,V65 was more comfortable and was a better long distance cruiser than the Vmax
Good old engines on both.
Awful transmission on the Honda.
@@ryanthompson2893 2nd gear could’ve been stronger but aside from that they did good

Interesting. Didn't realize the vmax was so much faster. Lots of good info in the comments by owners.
25 more hp, and a little more torque.
Have an 83 v65 and an 01 vmax in my garage. Love the vmax.
It's a no brainer - but it is funny how both 65's seem to be in tune with eachother. Ha ha

my dad got that magna when i was like 4 and i'm now 22 and its still great runing bike and i like the comfort way better then the vmax on it
@@ultrarider6127 i would have kept if it weren't for the problems. i had a lemon.

Vmax might a bit faster, but that v65 Magna is The greatest looking musclecruiser of all Time!
No its not the magna is ugly as hell with that rectangular head light fitted as an afterthought the vmax looks much better
I agree 100%! I wish Honda would’ve brought back the V65 in the 90’s a improved version. The VMax is a legend and rightfully so. Looks dept I’ll take the Magna and I like the rectangular headlight👍
A bit faster? It got smoked. This is the slow Vmax not the 1700 lol.
Haha a bit faster. Might want to rewatch the video….and looks? Vmax way outclasses the V65.
True 👍
I don't understand why you don't wear any helments
Helmets are for guys crashing. No need for a helmet of your not going to crash.

Both legendary
If you swap the camshafts from an interceptor 1100 it totally turns the V-65 into a performance cruiser 😉
Have you done that?? i heard rumors about it but never known of anyone doing it
It already is a performance cruiser...
Just sold a Sabre with 17,000 miles. Kinda sad about it.
My brother had one of those. Very cool bike.
For how much?
No way, these bikes are collectors. I feel bad for you.
Sad when you can’t tell which bike is which
I could tell by the sound.
I beat the crap out of my 85 V65 Sabre for 30k +miles. There was no way to beat a VMAX. They would pull a bike or two on every gear shift
Everybody forgets the 1200 Madura.
V/max will always be the king of muscle bikes
its a good match up against the 2nd gen zx14 in the 1/4 mile too
The Kawasaki Eliminator was the best looking.
Great footage!

Shaft Drive Magna?
My buddy had a V65 and he beat the VMax but it’s all in the rider. He knew his bike.
Didn’t look much like a race, didn’t sound like a race, shifting at 7k ?
we was shifting at 9.5k on the vmax and 10k on the magna right at the red line for both bikes
Sounds like the v65 is shifting early.
They almost sound like they are running the same RPMs and shifting at the same time.
That was a v-max without v boost.
Why?
@@mcplutt Because you can hear power going up with V boost and the magna would be waaaaaaaaaay behind when you know how to ride the V max with V Boost
