I have very little music knowledge and you explained it perfectly. Finally I understand what people mean by chord progression and the "I - V - vi - IV" thing, which I couldn't understand before. Are harmonics only chords, or you could harmonize a melody by creating another melody from notes from the chords or something? Sorry, I unfortunately don't have musical education, just learning from the internet.

I underwent seven years of rigorous classical piano training in Russia, starting at the age of eight. Despite graduating with distinction, I lacked an understanding of harmony. Ear-playing and basic chord progressions eluded me entirely. In Russia, our training was stringent, with a mandate of practicing classical pieces for a minimum of eight hours daily. Creativity was not encouraged; it was reprimanded. Each attempt to play a favorite pop song by ear resulted in punishment, even physical. While I mastered the most intricate Chopin compositions flawlessly, my childhood was spent in repetitive, robotic devotion, a cog in the machinery of glorifying my nation and perpetuating the myth of "great Russian culture". Perhaps this is why Russian pop and rock music often feel rudimentary and unpalatable. Robots cannot create; they merely mimic.

I love your videos ! they help me understand music more thank u ! I was just wondering why in some songs in the bass/chord clef with find a single note instead of a triad ? this really confuses me
Many thanks. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk You might find a single note in the Bass because that’s what the composer wants or it might be that the bass notes imply chords. Depends on the particular context.
It would work well in many situations to use V when looping back. I is still a possibility although a I finish followed by a I restart can feel a little stuck.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I need to clear a doubt. My teachers would always say to start on the first note of the scale. Example: if I was using the Eb Major scale, I'm told to start the melody in the note Eb. However, in your video, you used the key Eb Major yet started on the note G.
That lesson was so very informative for me. It all made sense to me, after spending a year of learning Theory for Bass Players with Ariane Cap. I'm grateful for all of these types of videos. Just awesome thanks. I'll check out the other lessons..

This is really nice. I write songs but don't know the theory behind it. I go by what sounds good to my ears or what I hear in my head. This can be a little bit tricky at first. But will try it. Just subbed Julie 😃
really thanks a lot... but I hope you can answer me this question or refer to me at least where I can find the answers to. and that is where can I use chords that some of their notes aren't in the scale like augmented and diminished and other chords? I love to make a more complexed harmony for my melodies but so far I'm experimenting more than catching the explanation behind. I wish you can do analyzation videos of some melodies and their harmony for composers like Chopin for instance because I find his harmony beautifully complexed and can be learned a lot from it.
Little tip. Try playing a I chord, followed by I diminished and then back to I, V and close with I. Preferably play it as a chord on the left hand and one melody note with the right hand. Also, the melody note sounds better (imo) if it's the minor third going to the major third or the tritone going to the fifth. Try playing I - I augmented - IV - V - I. I've had much fun playing around with these two examples and trying to make some good melodies. I've also noticed that Chopin makes use of the I diminished in some of his works as well, and Beethoven makes use of the I augmented. That's where I picked it up from ;)
Hey there, sorry i’m such a newbie to this but I was wondering how to identify which chords belong to chord 1 or 5 or any number in fact! Sorry if it an amateur question!
Ok. Here is a scale of C:- CDEFGABC Above each note of the scale add the note that is 3 above and 5 above. Then number the chords in Roman Numerals:- l CEG ll DFA lll EGB lV FAC V GBD Vl ACE Vll BDF
Thanks a lot. Your way of teaching makes this harmonization easy. I've just started my grade 6 abrsm theory and I'm glad that I've found your channel. Can you please teach about the 'rules' in harmonization? Like when it is better to use chord III or chord iv? Really finding it difficult😑. Thank you in advance from Sri Lanka ☺️🇱🇰

I love your videos ! they help me understand music more thank u ! I was just wondering why in some songs in the bass/chord clef with find a single note instead of a triad ? this really confuses me
Many thanks. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk
You might find a single note in the Bass because that’s what the composer wants or it might be that the bass notes imply chords. Depends on the particular context.

Would you end the last bar on chord V if the idea would be to loop back into bar 1? Or would you still end it on chord I?
It would work well in many situations to use V when looping back. I is still a possibility although a I finish followed by a I restart can feel a little stuck.
@@MusicMattersGB Thank you very much! This is something i've always wondered about! Awesome video by the way!

You don’t have to start on the tonic note but it’s a safe option. Melodies often begin on a note of the tonic chord.
That lesson was so very informative for me. It all made sense to me, after spending a year of learning Theory for Bass Players with Ariane Cap. I'm grateful for all of these types of videos. Just awesome thanks. I'll check out the other lessons..

how do you know what key is the melody in beforehand?
Check out the key signature/ the accidentals being used in the piece.
This is really nice. I write songs but don't know the theory behind it. I go by what sounds good to my ears or what I hear in my head. This can be a little bit tricky at first. But will try it. Just subbed Julie 😃
Worth working through. Thanks for joining us.

hello, awesome video! With chords, can I do random ones that contain the note, or do I have to do cadences? (perfect,V,I interrupted,V,I.)
You can use any but cadences are generally used at phrase endings.
Thanks, what a clear and useful lesson! Wish I'd learnt this earlier

really thanks a lot... but I hope you can answer me this question or refer to me at least where I can find the answers to.
and that is
where can I use chords that some of their notes aren't in the scale like augmented and diminished and other chords?
I love to make a more complexed harmony for my melodies but so far I'm experimenting more than catching the explanation behind.
I wish you can do analyzation videos of some melodies and their harmony for composers like Chopin for instance because I find his harmony beautifully complexed and can be learned a lot from it.
Have a look at our advanced harmony course and at our analysis videos. Loads there.
That's where I picked it up from ;)
I couldnt thank you enough, extremely helpful considering im self taught.

Hey there, sorry i’m such a newbie to this but I was wondering how to identify which chords belong to chord 1 or 5 or any number in fact! Sorry if it an amateur question!
Ok. Here is a scale of C:-
CDEFGABC
Above each note of the scale add the note that is 3 above and 5 above. Then number the chords in Roman Numerals:-
l CEG
ll DFA
lll EGB
lV FAC
V GBD
Vl ACE
Vll BDF
Thanks for the awesome lesson. Love you pops ! 💘
