I'm in my second year with bermuda grass in South Carolina and it has been quite the learning experience. We cut ours higher at 2 inches every 5-7 days and we use the annual Scotts program. It looks incredible when you have it dialed in but you have to water it consistently or it loses it's deep green quick. I might experiment it cutting shorter like yours next year.
Just sodded 15,000 sq ft of tahoma 31. It was delivered at 1.5 inches. A week later after it had settled some I scalped to 7/8 of inch then been mowing at 1 1/8 with a reel mower. May take it lower after I do some leveling and the sod roots better.
I’m in Louisiana in the top of the state and we go through two months every year of a very dry spell with zero rain so Bermuda grass is the only thing that doesn’t have large die off here
I’m having some success with Celebration Bermuda under a tree. It does get some sun, not a lot. And I’m mowing at 1.5” to 2”. It’s actually pretty dense and spreading from plugs I put in last year and two years ago.
Awesome! Glad you’re having success with it. Celebration is supposed to be a bit more shade tolerant than your standard Tiff 419. Thanks for commenting!
Up in NE Okra-Homer we have a Love-Hate with bermuda...it's not really winter tolerant, especially on the North side of the house-so fescue or something else on that side and under the trees. Good-ol' hairy nut-grass grass invades it badly up here too, an' that stuff's hard to kill! I can't afford to water, so I don't have many options for lawn weeds!
Yes sir, bermuda does not like the cold. Lucky for me we don’t get much cold weather down here lol my lawn was green into the new year this past year! Thanks for commenting!
😆 Bermuda is my Achilles heel in my mid Atlantic TTTF lawn. As summer approaches and TTTF starts to get spanked Bermuda is in its glory taking over like my mother in law at the beef buffet at the Golden Corral. Haven’t tried to control it because the kids are on the lawn constantly
I have large holes in the yard where the grass won't grow. I see your tree beds have a sharp edge to them. With the grass not grow when there is a large hole like your tree bed? How would I fix holes in my yard?
Look into plugging those areas. If you have bermuda, the plugs will gradually fill in those weak spots. Also, the dug out edge does a good job of preventing bermuda from sneaking into the beds. Definitely slows it down.
The bermudagrass root system is strong, but there’s still a chance less seed will take with more foot traffic. Luckily, if you can get most of it to take, the grass does a great job of filling itself in once the weather warms up.
Quick question. Do you raise your height of your grass during this hot dry weather?? I'm in Kyle, Tx. and I see no rain in sight for the next couple of weeks.
The 10 day forecast is about as scary as you can possibly get lol we need some actual rain. I bet we’ve had under 5” of rain this calendar year so far. Over 3” of that came with one storm.
Hey. So 1.5 years into having Bermuda and only 3 years in NB, TX. My lawn has brown patches. Not sure if due to to water not getting to it or something else? Learning a lot from you. Any advice?
You can usually narrow it down to water, disease, or insects. In this heat if you pull at the grass and it doesn’t come up in clumps, I would assume it’s due to heat/drought stress. Disease isn’t impossible, but definitely more rare under these current hot/dry conditions.
Hi I have a question: I am reel mowing around 1/2 inch and maybe a little lower. However I can’t seem to get the green color. It looks great super low but not very green. I am mowing every few days and last week I mowed 3 times in seven days.. still not green. I just started my second pgr application as well. Any ideas you can share ?
I would scalp your lawn to around .25”-.3” just to reset everything and go from there. A good scalp always does wonders for me. Maybe skip your next PGR treatment if you go that route though.
Question I hope someone can answer. I used Pennington Smart Seed Texas Bermuda Grass Seed to overseed my yard and in some areas the Bermuda seed that took well looks great but there are some rather larger patches that look like I seeded with st Augustine. Thankfully it’s only in my backyard but anyone know what the hell happened?
It's probably just weeds that have grown in the bare spots and you're confusing it with St. Augustine. Hit it with some weed killer and see if it dies off, the bermuda should spread and take over.
Bag seeds or boxstore seeds are usually common bermuda, common Is a THICKER BLADE bermuda. the sod that builders put down is usually hybrid bermuda , hybrid is sold in sod. So it will be two different looks, that's why you don't overseed bermuda. . There are higher quality seed that are hybrid you can buy like tiff 19, princess 77, arden 15.. at most pull up runners and replant or buy sod plugs.
@@LLCOOLJARED1 I appreciate the response. I actually thought the same thing. I used tenacity on it and did a full blanket spray of my backyard and while the tenacity killed other weeds in my yard it just whitened this “st Augustine” looking grass/weed and now it’s back to its full color so none of it was killed. I guess we’ll see what the future holds but I am hoping the Bermuda takes over eventually just thought my situation was very strange.
I would imagine it’s probably a weed of some sort, too. Hopefully that’s the case, because it’s easier to get rid of weeds than an invading turf grass. Also, like they mentioned above, in the future I would avoid overseeding your bermuda. Try plugging instead!
Great stuff Rhett. Don’t know how ur only watering twice a day once and still have a top notch lawn. I’m in w Texas w high winds and no rain, having to water my 1/2” celebration Bermuda at least 5 days a week. Spot on about those ugly seed heads. Keep the great vids coming, luv ur channel!
Great video. Do you know why my bermuda grass only grows runners in some spots of my yard and only grows vertically in all the rest? I keep it at 1in high mowing 2-3 times a week.
Is there anything out of the ordinary about the location of these spots? In shade, under the reflection of a window, near a driveway or sidewalk, etc? My normal answer would be to try and rough those areas up as much as possible to try and stimulate some vertical growth.
Or might be dry in that spot? I’ve noticed in my buffalo (not st augustine) that when it is trying to spread it’ll grow up and then start to look for the dirt or it might be a weed. I think young versions of some weeds look a lot like bermuda until it matures too? It could be very situational! Drop a few pieces of fertilizer on it and water it well and see!
Good video. But I wouldn’t say that Bermuda is not tolerant of shade. I and a lot of my neighbors have trees and the grass does fine as long as it is not shaded all day.
I think there are some cultivars that are a bit more shade tolerant. Maybe you have one of those. As a rule though, you usually want to steer clear of bermuda if you’re dealing with a lot of shade.
Ugly side.. it goes dormant in cold weather . It looks like a season long scalp mark over the full yard. Good side. You do get a break from yard work. But junkies love being out in the yard.
I was thinking about adding that in there! I do honestly enjoy the little break though. Last year I stayed dark green into January. Then it finally got cold.
I am tired of fighting it...its just the normal boring common annoying bermudagrass..how do i make this a lawn? Do I just tell my husband to mow it weekly?
MVP camera woman 🏆👍🏻
Well maintained Bermuda is so beautiful. I think it’s one of the most gorgeous grass types.
Agreed!
sorry, fine bladed low zoysias blow it away, no question. however, his bermuda is amazing, very hard to get bermuda to look like this
Fellow Texan (and aggie) and this was really informative. Explained to me more about bermuda than I was able to find from reading only
Happy to help! Thanks for commenting!
Great points.. you are correct that the Bermuda is not forgiving on the scalps.. they sure stick out like a sore thumb from the sidewalk..🤦🏻♂️
It's such a bad feeling when you scalp! Ruins the mow/trim.

Go for it! Give it a shot. It will always grow back. Thanks for stopping by!
2 inches is WAY too low especially in SC
Good ol seed heads. I laid down some 25% potassium and started seeing a decrease in the #s but always a pain
Yeah they’re no bueno. Luckily right now it’s not a total outbreak. I’ll have to look into adding more potassium!

Excited to hear about how you’re liking the Tahoma 31! Seems like a cool cultivar.

“Let’s everyone know you made a mistake.” That hits my soul lol. Very unforgiving on mistakes.
Mhmm! I hate scalp marks! They can completely ruin a good mow.

I was looking at the celebration bermuda. I didn't know how tall I could mow it. 1-3/4 is the lowest I can go.

What would you recommended for shaded areas? Like under trees etc
Either a flower bed, mulch bed, or rock garden if there is a lot of shade.
Does Texas bremuda go dormant in the winter? I'm in Northern California 15 minutes north of Sacramento
The very southern portion of the state won’t typically go dormant, but most of the state will at some point.
😆 Bermuda is my Achilles heel in my mid Atlantic TTTF lawn. As summer approaches and TTTF starts to get spanked Bermuda is in its glory taking over like my mother in law at the beef buffet at the Golden Corral.

Oh yeah, I definitely wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of some invading bermuda!

I laid seed a week ago and it’s starting to sprout and I have two big dogs that like to run. What is the durability like? Is the root system strong?

What's a scalp and what causes it?
are you in central texas? i’m in college station and i’m stressed about this 100 degree heat and no rain in sight
Oh I’m stressed too lol I’m originally from the Huntsville area, but currently live in New Braunfels.
Quick question.
Do you raise your height of your grass during this hot dry weather??
I'm in Kyle, Tx. and I see no rain in sight for the next couple of weeks.
I’m going to try and avoid it! We’ll see how we hold up!
One of the best bermuda grasses on the internet. What edger do you have/use? Also, do you have common bermuda or hybrid?
Thank you sir! It’s a hybrid sod. Tifway 419. I use my power rotary scissors attachment. I got the larger blade for edging too.
@@LawnInsider Thanks man! Appreciate it!

Scalp marks are my biggest issue with Bermuda lol. Always wondered how Zoysia would look
Oh they’re absolutely the worst. They are a total buzzkill on your mow lol
What kind of Bermuda do you have? Really like your videos, straight to the point! Keep it up!

Thanks Wendell! Appreciate you dropping by!
I have heard that we should only cut 1/3” off but never heard “why”…..so this was news to me that only the top 1/3 is actually green!
Yep! Each grass type is different. This is one of the only things I really don’t like about Bermuda.
Even in the seed head areas, it looks way better than St. Augustine, which looks more like crabgrass than anything.
