  • We meet with one of my top industrial design students, Christopher Negrete, to discuss career and job hunt strategies. This episode is all about picking a specialization. It can be very scary to do this. Designers are usually attracted to novelty and variety. But the reality is that you can't be everything to everyone.
    Connect with Christopher Negrete on LinkedIn (and hire him!): / christopher-negrete-26...
    Enroll in my online industrial design course, Form Fundamentals. bit.ly/335vsqO ...I'll teach you about visual storytelling, design language, and form. Make a killer portfolio and land your dream job.

    Specialized or generalized = inhouse or agency = work 8h a day or until you are done = Family or not = make slow progress or rush experience = make allways the same or do every month a new genre = stay in your field or have much more responsobility
    and at least: be payed good or get less.. :)

    Great conversation! I'm right at the same place as my second vaccine should be good to go in about 7-days here, and get back to looking for work. Gotta get my mind back to thinking about how to go about the job hunt. Trying to think about what companies locally might be looking for my skillsets and experience level is always the a hardest part.

    Christopher, you should design mechanical watches. Those are mostly designed and built to last 100+ years.

    Hey John, I got an interesting question for you. When you design a product, till what point are you involved with it? Do you prefer to be there till the final launch and even beyond or just prefer being the ideas guy or anywhere between/beyond these limits?

    • @Design.Theory
      @Design.Theory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I prefer to see it through from very beginning all the way to product launch and beyond. But it really comes down to my availability and the client's needs.

    Super useful video, i'm about to graduate in july and i'm job hunting right now.
    I got an offer to do an internship in a well-kown furniture design studio, but it's non-paid. what is your opinion about that? Should i take it for the experience?

    • @Design.Theory
      @Design.Theory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is highly subjective and situational. Only you can determine what is right for you. I did take on an unpaid internship at the very beginning of my career before I had graduated, but I kind of wish I had spent more time to find a paid one.
