Ok, thank you very much.. this is good to know I just aquired a 1991 klr650 with 4800 original miles... it was a theft recovery and I want a kickstarter for a back-up... I know where you can buy those kickstarters and the stop plate.... still brand new.... I am gonna buy the kit for my old bike... seems like a smart idea to have both options....

    Yes, you can.
The thing to remember, though, is that the Gen 2 cannot be bump or kick started with a completely dead battery. As long as there is enough left in the battery to charge the igniter, bump or kick starting is possible.
With the Gen 1 bikes you can bump or kick start them even if there is no battery in the bike.
A kick starter is a good back up system, but much more viable on the Gen 1.

can you still use the electric starter with this mod? and have the kick starter as a back-up?

Hello, I am replacing the top of Kick Lever with an old Brass Pedal I got. I am not sure hot to take the detent spring off without messing it up. Do I just pop off with a flat head? Don't think I will need it with the new Pedal because it comes with parts. 1st time doing this. Any help I would appreciate. I can't find any videos on it! Thanks Guys!

No, that's an easy drill-through with a bit the same size as the thread minor diameter. The detent will work all OK, but the whole thing may rattle a bit without the O-rings in place.

Let me know if you find a source for a new kick lever - I'd love to have one!

      Hi Melissa,
I know next to nothing about Chinese scooters, but you might try this: www.amazon.com/Scooter-Start-Starter-Lever-139QMB/dp/B00D8M7U6E
If that isn't the right part, try Chinesescooterparts.com or e-bay. I think your biggest problem will be that the scooter is 13 years old and parts may be hard to come by. But again, I don't know anything about Chinese scooters.

Does anyone know what other bikes have the same kick lever size?

For a KLR, use a KZ1000/KZ900 lever. They are usually available, cheap, and little-used. I've since put one on my bike. Look this over: www.souperdoo.com/stuff%20that%20i%20think%20about/everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-a-lkr-kickstarter-but-were-afraid-or-too-smart-to-ask

I have 200cc Ozbike my kick start lever won't grip on how can I fix that

The kickstarter shaft is usually hardened and the splines are quite stout. It's likely that the splines in the kick start lever are stripped. Once the lever is loose on the shaft it is easy to strip them. You'll need a new lever.
If the splines on the shaft are also stripped you'll need to renew the whole mess. The question is, is it worth fixing?
Keep that pinch bolt on the lever tight!
