Yeah, sense of fear kicks in too. Could mistakenly jab their teeth area instead. Mouth is close to nostrils. Poking or covering the eyes is bit better.
I have been near crocs and alligators and vultures and bison and foxes and a whole bunch of rattlesnakes in the wild and I STILL SURVIVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For Polar Bears a better trick would be avoid being tasty, they don't care of you are a danger, they will always see you as a tasty snack.
Tasty or not, nutritional gain is the reason they hunt, u might aswell just disappear if u dont wanna get eaten, or be a robot.

Best thing that was taught to me and used effectively for cassowaries is picking up a large branch with leaves approx 2m long and holding that in front of you. As they approach or run towards you they get close and hold that distance while you walk backwards to a safer area. They will continue to approach but just hold it to keep that distance. Worked every time (approx a dozen).
