Great story. I'm a life long Cowboy fan. Bullet Bob really changed the game. I honestly doubt most men today could handle being the fastest man on Earth in the greatest country on Earth and become an NFL cheat code where there is no answer for your gift and every team has to scramble to see what works best before they play you lol. I grew up in Annapolis and Roger Staubach is revered as the greatest Navy football player. That he would lead the effort to get Bob Hayes in The NFL Hall of Fame sounds about right. Staubach is pure class.
I've seen several YT commenters in other videos mention how Bob Hayes didn't have good hands, but then I read somewhere that the receivers coach for the Cowboys also was the coach for legendary Lance Alworth and he stated Bobs hands were as good as Lance's, also Staubach said he had good hands, so I'll ignore the YT criticizers from now on.

Wow. I didn't know Hayes revolutionized the entire position and view of Wide Receiver, QB and Defense. He created the Zone D!! And his personal evolution was incredible. Thanks for this!!
The NY Giants invented the Zone Defense in he 1950s to thwart the Pass Happy Cleveland browns. It was called the Unbrella Defense at the time, and Cowboy's Head Coach Tom Landry was one of the players on that defense.

Back in the day, in the 1960s, when I (70 years old now) was growing up in West Dallas, the neighborhood kids would play two hand touch football on the unpaved streets. We also played at the Catholic Elementary school during our one-hour lunch break. Every kid went by a Dallas Cowboy Name when playing. I was known as Pete Gent for a while. However, the coveted Name by everyone was Bob Hayes, the which was given to the fastest boy in the team. The fastest boy was George Williams, he was "Bob Hayes", so the defense always double covered him. Those were the days! Bob Hayes didn't run, he GALLOPED!! He was amazing to watch, especially after he caught a "bomb".
And one of the biggest HOF snubs till this day is another Raider ... Lester Hayes. And I'm not even a Raiders fan, but it's criminal that Hayes remains snubbed.
On the track-and-field oval, Hayes tied the world record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.3 seconds. He tied it again in 1962, when a new record had been set at 9.2. Then, in 1963, he set a new record - 9.1 seconds - that stood unbroken for more than a decade. Hayes also led the Rattlers with 11 touchdowns that season, rushing for 260 yards on 55 carries and catching 15 passes for 401 yards.
I’m 72 and remember watching him and how he changed the game. Within 2 yrs teams were digning track stars. My NY Giants had Homer Jones( still NFL record for 25 yds/ catch)! Also had DB’s -Henry Carr and Clarence Childs all low 9 second 100’s! Exciting times.

I was lucky, my father took my brother and I to lots of Cowboy games starting in 1964. He was a rookie in 1965. Saw him play at lest 75 of his Cowboy games live!
For professional American Football at the elite level, there is an important difference between QUICKNESS and SPEED. Fortunately, Bob Hayes had the very highest level of BOTH. Note that since his time, there have been plenty of track athletes with World-Class speed who have not seen success on the football field, because their speed only helped them on distances that were longer than 100 yards. Hayes had EXPLOSIVE speed over short distances.

Jim Thorpe does not have a SuperBowl ring. But he does have 3 pro football Championships, 2 Olympic Gold medals, and Is in the HOF. So because the championship wasn't "called" the SuperBowl Thorpe doesn't count? I say he should count. Bob can be second.

To be a football fan since the age of 10 and witness the history I feel actually blessed I am a Cleveland Browns fan and just missed Jim Brown but remember Bob Hayes as most of the highlights show against my team. The era of Packers vs. Cowboys made the modern NFL in my opinion and what a great set of players and stories I’m sure you’ll be covering. I'm a Tom Landry-era Dallas Cowboys fan, since 1963. The Cowboys had some great receivers...Billy Howton, Buddy Dial, Frank Clarke, Pete Gent, before drafting Bob Hayes, but Hayes gave Tom Landry AND Don Meredith a speed-burner that pro football had never before witnessed. Hayes essentially cost the Cowboys the 1967 NFL Championship in the Ice Bowl. The Packers defensive backs noticed that if Hayes left the huddle and lined up with his hands tucked into his pants he was just a decoy. If he left the huddle and lined up with his hands out in the open, he was the intended target. For most of the second half they ignored him when he lined up with his hands in the pants and basically played 11 on 10 football.

I am 62 as a 7 year old my grandpa had season tickets to cowboys games. That age got in free. Some big games no seats so I sat on my dads lap sometimes the aisle. They told me, watch the fastest man on earth at all times for the bomb. Bullet Bob Hayes, Roger and Don Merideth were my hero’s. Teams gave him 10 yards and he still blow by two people. It was amazing to watch. In the yard games they would say do a hook route or go for a bomb. Bob was something else. Many didn’t like blacks at the time but I never understood that part. He was the same but fast w dark skin. I never forgot that part of life. He was my hero. Thanks bullet Bob Hayes!
I remember when the Giants signed Henry Carr, an Olympic sprinter himself who was advertised as the second fastest human. Bob Hayes showed everyone that it was true. 👀😉😂👍🇺🇸
I'm not a Cowboys fan, but, along with Bob Lilly, Walt Garrison and Don Meredith, Bob Hayes was a player on that team and in football I had great admiration for.
I remember him being a receiver in Dallas! He made everyone look slow! But it took him a couple of years to learn how to catch the ball! If he caught on the run? He was gone out of sight! He changed the NFL Game so much! They teams started looking outside College Football for future picks! They started drafting athletes instead of football players! Which has changed the league from being a football game into being more of entertainment! The game is 3 hours long now instead of 1 hour!
The passing game wasn't sophisticated back then. Wide receivers averaged huge numbers compared to today, because passing was almost a desperate, all-or-nothing move. That's why sprinters were so good then, and don't matter now.
The Cowboys were dumb to not let him compete in the 1968 Olympic trials and maybe go to Mexico City! What fantastic publicity for the team when he was given a victory parade in Dallas!
I saw a TV game where a pass, not to Hayes, was intercepted. Everybody was running the other way and it looked like they were in slow motion. Out of nowhere came Bob Hayes, passing everyone and catching the guy who made the interception.
Bob Hayes was also good for telegraphing running plays to the Packers defense in the Ice Bowl. They noticed he would come to the line of scrimmage with his hands tucked in his pant waist when Meredith handed off.
Both Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi were assistant coaches on the staff of the NY Giants and both wanted to coach the Giants when Jim Lee Howell retired. Unfortunately for the Giants, Howell was promised one more year by the owner and both Landry and Lombardi were given offers by other teams leading into Howell's last year. The Cowboys and Packers became legendary franchises and the Giants fell into mediocrity.
Jerry Rice is the leading pass receiver of all time. He was known for his healthy lifestyle and training regimen. I would like to think that receivers would learn something from the lives of Hayes and Rice about how to maximize success in this position.
Bob Hayes would tell the quarter back "just throw it in the left side of the field i will be there to catch it. From what i heard he said that to the quarterback many times. And he would be there to catch the football.
Great story. Visuals were good also but some of the no. 22s were Emmit Smith and not Bob Hayes. I remember watching Bob when I was younger when he was playing for the Cowboys. Always exciting. I always remember him running down a db from a long distance after an interception of another receiver. He was insanely fast on that play but it is never brought up. Maybe someone can reference it.
I was at the Cotton Bowl when Don Meredith threw the FIRST TOUCH DOWN pass to Bob Hayes against The Cardinals. I forgot the name of the defender , however , the defender was stride for stride then the pass came and landed in his hands THEN BOB HAYES took off leaving the defender behind by 15 yards crossing the goal line.. The defender just stopped
I really enjoyed watching this profile. I remember watching him when I was a small boy & I wanted to be just like him. An observation though -- There are several still shots in the video which show the other legendary #22 standing along side Troy Aikman. A minor error in the story of a major life!!!
Watched Bob Hays and Homer Jones of the NY Giants run a foot race during warmups one Sunday in the Cotton Bowl. Guess who won? Enjoyed the vintage video, but was a little confused why Troy Aikman and Emmit Smith were in a few of the photos.
Think about this, the NFL Hall of Fame requisitions bronze likenesses of various players. The artisans who create these likenesses get it right. Why the hell bronze creators of the Allen Iverson, Dwyane Wade, Cristiano Ronaldo, etc. likenesses can't give it right?
@KorithStoneheart Cowboy's don't formally retire numbers, but they do informally. Their hasn't been #12 since Staubach. #8 since Aikman or #74 since Lilly (not positive about that). Hayes made HOF after Emmitt was drafted and given #22. Probably reason why.

I became a Bob Hayes fan after the 1960 Tokyo Olympic. Then he became my idol. When he turned to football I became a Dallas Cowboys fan. The best of days for me. What I mean is I began to love football as an obsession. From the pros I got interested in college football. Bear Bryant and Knute Rockne and all the greats. Bob Hayes began my love for this sport. I owe him so much as the most important sport influence in my life. May he and his family and loved ones be well and loving his contribution. God bless all people who care about this excellent soul.

That 8.6 was an estimate split or hand timed split. Frame by frame analysis determined it to be closer to 8.9 seconds. Still amazing.

Hayes essentially cost the Cowboys the 1967 NFL Championship in the Ice Bowl. The Packers defensive backs noticed that if Hayes left the huddle and lined up with his hands tucked into his pants he was just a decoy. If he left the huddle and lined up with his hands out in the open, he was the intended target. For most of the second half they ignored him when he lined up with his hands in the pants and basically played 11 on 10 football.

I am 62 as a 7 year old my grandpa had season tickets to cowboys games. That age got in free. Some big games no seats so I sat on my dads lap sometimes the aisle. They told me, watch the fastest man on earth at all times for the bomb. Bullet Bob Hayes, Roger and Don Merideth were my hero’s. Teams gave him 10 yards and he still blow by two people. It was amazing to watch. In the yard games they would say do a hook route or go for a bomb. Bob was something else. Many didn’t like blacks at the time but I never understood that part. He was the same but fast w dark skin. I never forgot that part of life. He was my hero. Thanks bullet Bob Hayes!

I'm not a Cowboys fan, but, along with Bob Lilly, Walt Garrison and Don Meredith, Bob Hayes was a player on that team and in football I had great admiration for.
I remember him being a receiver in Dallas! He made everyone look slow! But it took him a couple of years to learn how to catch the ball! If he caught on the run? He was gone out of sight!
He changed the NFL Game so much! They teams started looking outside College Football for future picks! They started drafting athletes instead of football players! I saw a TV game where a pass, not to Hayes, was intercepted. Everybody was running the other way and it looked like they were in slow motion. Out of nowhere came Bob Hayes, passing everyone and catching the guy who made the interception.
Bob Hayes was also good for telegraphing running plays to the Packers defense in the Ice Bowl.

Both Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi were assistant coaches on the staff of the NY Giants and both wanted to coach the Giants when Jim Lee Howell retired. Unfortunately for the Giants, Howell was promised one more year by the owner and both Landry and Lombardi were given offers by other teams leading into Howell's last year. The Cowboys and Packers became legendary franchises and the Giants fell into mediocrity.
Jerry Rice is the leading pass receiver of all time. He was known for his healthy lifestyle and training regimen. I would like to think that receivers would learn something from the lives of Hayes and Rice about how to maximize success in this position.

Great story. Visuals were good also but some of the no. 22s were Emmit Smith and not Bob Hayes. I remember watching Bob when I was younger when he was playing for the Cowboys. Always exciting. I always remember him running down a db from a long distance after an interception of another receiver. He was insanely fast on that play but it is never brought up. Maybe someone can reference it.
I was at the Cotton Bowl when Don Meredith threw the FIRST TOUCH DOWN pass to Bob Hayes against The Cardinals. I forgot the name of the defender , however , the defender was stride for stride then the pass came and landed in his hands THEN BOB HAYES took off leaving the defender behind by 15 yards crossing the goal line.. The defender just stopped

@KorithStoneheart Cowboy's don't formally retire numbers, but they do informally. Their hasn't been #12 since Staubach. #8 since Aikman or #74 since Lilly (not positive about that). Hayes made HOF after Emmitt was drafted and given #22. Probably reason why.

I became a Bob Hayes fan after the 1960 Tokyo Olympic. Then he became my idol. When he turned to football I became a Dallas Cowboys fan. The best of days for me. What I mean is I began to love football as an obsession. From the pros I got interested in college football. Bear Bryant and Knute Rockne and all the greats. Bob Hayes began my love for this sport. I owe him so much as the most important sport influence in my life. May he and his family and loved ones be well and loving his contribution. God bless all people who care about this excellent soul.
