So jealous glad you got too see the band before the plane crash sadly I didn’t BUT I did see them years later after Johnny took over as lead singer and just a few years before Billy passed and they still out on a great concert

What makes this so much better is Billy Powell's piano work. (IMO) He really shows off his classical training. In the studio version they have organ-type of keyboard playing. It also shows how the "three guitar army" can play together. It's hard to believe that in a few months we would lose so many of them. GODSPEED Freebirds!
I met Billy several times. He started as a roadie and after this song was recorded he said this is how I would lead into this song. Another roadie recorded it and gave it to Gary Rossington. When Ronnie heard it he went to Billy and said you're a roadie and play a piano like that? You're no longer a roadie, you're in the band. He was so humble and a really nice guy. He told me Ronnie never had a mark from his neck down from the plane crash. He died from blunt force trauma to his head. Billy had terrible scars on his face from that crash. The only one still living is the drummer, Artimus Pyle.
@@firedoc5 In the early 90's we use to go to a place called Ward's Landing off of 210 right outside of Jacksonville. Some people came by car, some by boat, but by noon on Sundays that place was packed. There was a bar, but a stage outside and musicians would bring their instruments and jam. It wasn't uncommon for Artimus Pyle, Billy Powell or Gary Rossington to show up and play. Everybody had a great time and not once did a fight ever break out even though people were drinking and partying all day. Great times.
Those were the days man. All those amazing seventies festival rock bands. Skynyrd, the Grateful Dead and many others. Hot and high. Loudest thing on earth just jamming away. Loved it.

My husband's best friend called yesterday to say he was wearing a Skynyrd t-shirt when he walked into a Winn-Dixie. A guy walked past and said "Nice shirt". His friend turned around and realized it was Johnny VanZant! Yes, it happens all the time here. Can't count the times I've seen Donnie VanZant at Publix. Always a pleasure talking to him!
One of the best parts of this video (besides all the HOT 70's chicks) is the energy in the crowd swelling as they knew the fast part was coming and they built their volume and energy along with the band. Amazing!
Hard to believe the only living members are Gary Rossington (using slide on guitar) and Artimus Pyle (drummer). So much heartbreaks for this band. At least two original members got to see this song go down in history as one of the greatest songs ever made. I will forever be a 70's girl! ✌
Where does the time go? It speeds up as we get older and realize there is less sand on top of the glass than the bottom. But the good times remain in our hearts, even as we miss those we loved and lost.
@@unclej7842 I was telling my husband the same thing. As I get older it seems time goes by faster. The holiday season is upon us again and it feels like Christmas 2021 was just a couple months ago. I’m so glad you decided to watch this! I think, at one time or another, I was every girl in that crowd - riding some boy’s shoulders, staring at the band longingly from the front row, getting sunburned as hell in the hot summer sun, kissing a guy I just met in the middle of the crowd, jumping up and down with everybody else and singing along … This video is evocative as all get out for me. Well done. Peace from Ohio … and, I meant to add, all the long flyaway long hair on stage and in the crowd was because nobody really made hair conditioner in those days. If your hair was clean, it was also very dry.
I was fortunate enough to see Skynyrd in 1977 in Philadelphia at JFK Stadium. The lineup was J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts & Great Southern, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. I was 16 years old and my girlfriend was 14. One of the happiest days of my life.
Wow! That sounds great! J. Giles Band too!! Don't care for Peter Frampton. I saw them three times in the 70's. Also saw them hanging out at clubs in Atlanta before that. SOUTHERN ROCK!!
Its hard not to cry watching this because a few months after this, they were in the plane crash. I was 15, and it was so sad to so many fans.❤ I'm happy they got back together with Ronnie's brother and the others.
Yes, it was part of the Day on the Green concert series. The lineup was them, Peter Frampton, Santana and The Outlaws. This was 2 weeks before I got married. I got tickets from a neighbor who was a paramedic that worked all the Day on the Green concerts.
I was supposed to be at this concert, but on the way my friend who was driving his VW Bug swerved and lost control on Interstate 80. The vehicle rolled 3 times and some how we all walked away. We missed the concert, and I was grounded by my parents after getting caught in a lie. I had told them I was spending the weekend at a friends house for the weekend, because they would never have let me go to Oakland for a concert. I was 14 years old, and to this day still regret missing that concert.
The 70s music scene was unrivaled IMO…of course I’m biased. Sal, you would have loved it. I was fortunate enough to see Zep, Allmans, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Marley, CSNY, the list goes on and on. Big music festivals and large stadiums were easily accessible where I grew up. I’m a lucky gal. Thanks for another great reaction and stroll down memory lane. ❤
This was a venue for several bands. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elvin Bishop, Santana and Peter Frampton. The concert was a part of a series of concerts called “Day on the Green”
Was so fortunate to actually be there since I lived only 80 miles away. It was Day on the Green, they had these for about 4 yrs in a row. Line up was Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, Peter Frampton, and 1 other, sorry don't remember who. The Energy was so big that day, and that was the 2nd time I was able to seem them, and a few months later, the crash, blew my mind, I was and still am a huge fan. Still have the original Street Survivor album, along others. My first Skynyrd concert was the same year, New Years Eve 1977... Cold Blood, Tower of Power, Lynyrd Skynyrd.. Different kind of opening Acts, but a great show indeed.. Once again and the final time was the Reunion Tour, in Concord, California Pavilion, 1987 and so looking forward to this, and it brought tears to me, to see little Brother Johnnie play it so precise, you could close your eyes and almost think it was The original Ronnie. This gave many to hear and see what great music was about.
Skynyrd was a beloved band. Ronnie commanded attention thru his lyrics that hit home with so many of us. If you were to want a Southern Rock anthem, you got it.
Such happy times! Vietnam was finally over. Peace and love and rock and roll ruled for a while. Most of us strove to get along with each other so we could just have fun! So much better than right now. Lord help us all✨ I was 25 and loved it
I was at this show when they played 2 or 3 days earlier in Anaheim Stadium it was called the Summer Strut Skynyrd headlined at our show it also included Rex, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, and Ted Nugent About 52 days after this performance their airplane crashed Killing Ronnie Van Zandt, and siblings Steve and Cassie Gaines guitar player and backup singer 😪
That's the first thing I always tell anyone that's going to watch Freebird !!! They kill it ! My favorite band ever. It was in the 70s as it is today . I remember listening to this when I was 12 years old and it really makes me sad sometimes to watch it and I have over and over but knowing this will never happen again is so sad . And I've saw Skynyrd twice and the first was in 96 and Billy Powell and Leon Wilkinson was still alive then and the one and only Mr Huey Thompson from the guitar Army was playing with them then and it's hands down the best concert I've ever seen so far .
Everytime they played it it was longer. The longest time was a hour and 20 minutes. In T TOWN. In Sweet Home Alabama. I was there. I was 23 I'm 67 now. I followed them guy's all over the country and England once. I followed that band from 72 to 77. That's my Band! I ❤️ my Free 🐦 's.
You will also greatly enjoy... The Outlaws, Green Grass and High Tides, 11-10-1978, Capitol Theatre. This is a 23 minute jam. Make sure it's the video, not just audio. They have the whole concert online but GG&HT is the finale.
That little bird sound was a Duane Allman thing. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from live at Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers would be a great song to check out.
"Day on the Green" was a recurring concert in Oakland, California. The original event run was from 1973 to 1992. It was started back up again in 2015. The band lineup for the July 2nd and July 4th 1977 event was: Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana, Outlaws. I would think Peter Frampton might have been the headliner at that time.
And on October 20, 1977, that same year, three of the members including the lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant, were killed in an aircraft crash! This concert was 2 July 1977. Only 3 more months of this talent left 🥺
Allen Collins was the lead guitar at the end. Gary Rossington on the slide. Allen Collins actually wrote and composed most of the song and his guitar parts when he was 17!
This was Day on the Green day 4 or 5. It was a annual thing and this went from May 7th through July 24th featuring some of the greatest bands of our time.
Don't know if anyone answered your question at the beginning, but this was from a concert series called a Day on the Green put together by the legendary Bill Graham. There would be 5 or 6 shows every summer at the Oakland Coluseum. Each show would have 5 or 6 bands, sometimes more. The line up for this concert was the Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton as the headliner. Tickets were like $20. Gates would open at 10am and the show would start at 12 or 1. 60,000 people were at these concerts. It was just one big party on the green with live music. It was a great time to be a teenager in the Bay Area. I went to a couple of these shows every year. Great memories. And, I was at this show.
I was at this concert…it was a “Day on the Green” when you could see like 5 top mainstream bands for like $12.50 LOL. Bill Graham was the promoter and if you lived in the Bay Area you would never miss one of his shows.
They were the opening act for Peter Frampton tour in 1977 . I went to see Peter Frampton and Ly Skynrrd in 1997 and Peter was the opening act for them ..
I saw them 3.5 months later on 10 19 77 in Greenville SC. They left Greenville the next day, going to Baton Rouge La. Their plane crashed on 10 20 77,Free Bird was the last song that night. They lost 3 members of the band, including the lead singer, who was also the founder of the band. Ronnie Van Zant.
Great song/ One of the best ever! Saw them 2x in the '70s - it was beyond amazing. But as far as them being "Good Guys". If you have the one beer and leave quickly, it would have been fine. But they were BAD boys. And you wouldn't have wanted to stay around after that. When drunk/or doped up, there was horrible fighting and destruction of hotels frequently. Residual anger about how some of them grew up. It was super tense. But, the most important part for us, the fans...is the music. That can never be faulted. They practiced time and time again, working HARD. The caliber of each member, I have no words. All 3 guitars were the best. I wish so much that they were all still here. God Bless 'em.
I believe this is Day on the Green. They would have four or five pretty big groups. I went when I was 12. Fleetwood Mac headlined. My first concert ❤️✌️
This was an event I think was called day on the green. There were many bands that day including Santana. The headliner was Peter Frampton, which is why there was so many girls in the crowd vs guys. Peter Frampton had just released Frampton comes alive and he was kind of a teen girl heartthrob. My sister had his poster on her wall back then.
God's rock and roll band other great songs he's alive devil in a bottle can't take that away saw this band 6 times on the simple man cruise they give a lot of money to the poor and sick god bless Lynyrd Skynyrd and the van Zant family
Watching this video gets me every time knowing that they had no clue that some of them would be dead in a few months. We live our lives not knowing how and when it will all end, but is that a blessing in itself? He's free now... At least we have these moments on file and on recordings to remember.
Just a bit over three months later their lives would change forever. I'm still sad when I think about it. The two guitarists doing the solo would later form the Rossington-Collins band. They'd have a minor radio hit with "Don't Misunderstand Me" but didn't have anywhere near the following that LS had. Johnny Van Zandt, the younger brother of the singer in this video, Ronnie, would take over as the lead singer when LS had their reunion in 1987. I was lucky enough to see them live that year. I thought Johnny sounded a lot like his late brother, just younger and not quite as confident.
They performed for us (military) in Frankfurt when I was stationed in Germany. Don’t remember the year but I was there 2002-2004, so somewhere in there lol It was awesome!!
This song was written for Duane Allman... the chirping bird sound emulates Duane's ending to "Layla." I was so fortunate to have seen Skynyrd on New Year's Day 1975, 5 days short of my 15th birthday. Another great one from them is "Ballad of Curtis Loew." That "gentleman" you referenced was Allen Collins.
At 7;02 thats Allen Collins legendary Firebird guitar which many are pining for today and he is the primary songwriter of this song a song he penned at 16
This was like an all day concert with several performers over the 4th of July. Peter Frampton was following Lynyrd Skynyrd and he was a big crush for many girls. Sunscreen hadn't been invented yet so you saw sunburns throughout the crowd. Their plane crashed a few months later, killing the lead singer, the guitarist in red, his sister, a backup singer and a manager. The only ones still alive from this lineup is Artimus Pyle, the drummer and the guitarist in black using the slide on his guitar, Gary Rossington. I could watch Allen Collins (guitarist in white) all day long!
The poignancy of these lyrics never fails to hit me in the heart… “If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?”
Yes Boys, we will do you one better and never forget you in your glory.
Iam so glad you came back to this . True ROCK. No cell phones , just rocking out .

And I've saw Skynyrd twice and the first was in 96 and Billy Powell and Leon Wilkinson was still alive then and the one and only Mr Huey Thompson from the guitar Army was playing with them then and it's hands down the best concert I've ever seen so far .
If I could invent a time machine I'd go back and be in that crowd
Everytime they played it it was longer. The longest time was a hour and 20 minutes. In T TOWN. In Sweet Home Alabama. I was there. I was 23 I'm 67 now. I followed them guy's all over the country and England once. I followed that band from 72 to 77. That's my Band! I ❤️ my Free 🐦 's.
This is the greatest live performance in all of history.
Framton comes alive... Do you feel like we do!... MUST WATCH!
The 70's...great times!! ❤🥳
You will also greatly enjoy...
The Outlaws, Green Grass and High Tides, 11-10-1978, Capitol Theatre. This is a 23 minute jam. Make sure it's the video, not just audio. They have the whole concert online but GG&HT is the finale.
One of the best reactions of this video.
I was in high school and man did we party to this song. ❤️✌️
06:52 😂 most guitars are usually made out of wood 😊
Love them southern boys! 🎸🎸🎸
The Knebworth live performance is worth a watch/listen/experience as well
To me its way better!
I was at this concert and attended many Days on the Green in 1977.
So glad you looked this up.
That guitar you focused on was Allen Collins famous Firebird and it was indeed Special
The anthem of my generations youth!
Absolutely the best
I saw them front row center!
So sad what happened a few months later.😌
I believe this is Day on the Green. They would have four or five pretty big groups. I went when I was 12. Fleetwood Mac headlined. My first concert ❤️✌️
Live concert at the Oakland Coliseum (Raiders), California
Fantastic ❤❤❤❤❤
This was an event I think was called day on the green. There were many bands that day including Santana. The headliner was Peter Frampton, which is why there was so many girls in the crowd vs guys. Peter Frampton had just released Frampton comes alive and he was kind of a teen girl heartthrob. My sister had his poster on her wall back then.
God's rock and roll band other great songs he's alive devil in a bottle can't take that away saw this band 6 times on the simple man cruise they give a lot of money to the poor and sick god bless Lynyrd Skynyrd and the van Zant family
Outlaws - Green Grass and High Tides will make you smile big time !!!
Such a great guitar solo. LS was such a great live band. Great reaction!! 🙂
They performed for us (military) in Frankfurt when I was stationed in Germany. Don’t remember the year but I was there 2002-2004, so somewhere in there lol It was awesome!!
I saw them in concert many years ago and it was amazing!
my friend whom I met in 1980 was at that concert !
Glad you appreciated this!! It is other worldly! It takes you to a crazed frenzy!! Lynyrd Skynrd forever!!
I was at this concert in 1977. Three months before the plane crash!
One of the greatest live performances of all time (by anyone).
At 7;02 thats Allen Collins legendary Firebird guitar which many are pining for today and he is the primary songwriter of this song a song he penned at 16
Allen Collins in the white shirt and pants is playing a Gibson Explorer, not a Firebird. He always played an Explorer most of the time.
I was at j.f.k. stadium in phila. in 1977 to see them. Also saw frampton and j geiles band.
