  • In this video, we break down the five fundamental steps to jumping. Whether it's your first time jumping or you already know what you're doing, these steps will help you jump the right way without having too many falls.
    I remember learning to jump for the first couple of years and rarely having a consistent landing. Now that I know how to land most of my jumps, here's the easiest way I could think to break it down!
    Step one: Send the kite with the bar sheeted out.
    Sending the kite with the bar sheeted out gives it time to lift without pulling you off of your edge. If you pull in on the bar as it rises up, it will scoop the kite in the power zone and pull you downwind.
    Step two: Edge into the wind
    As the kite is rising up, edge into the wind rather than staying in a straight line. This will create tension in the lines and give you more of a vertical lift. If you find your jumps are pulling you downwind, it could be that you are not edging against the kite enough.
    Step three: Pull in on the bar
    Right as your kite is reaching the zenith, pull in on the bar, and release your board from the water. Weighting the back leg and pulling up on your front knee will help get a stronger pop. The timing of this is key and takes some practice before you get the muscle memory down.
    Step four: Sheet out
    As you've reached the peak of your jump and start the descent, sheet out on the bar and re-direct the kite back down. If the kite stays at the zenith, it will swing you under it and drop you out of the sky. This is probably the most common mistake we all make when learning how to jump.
    Step 5: Point downwind
    The last and final step is the most crucial for landing your jumps every time. Simply keep your front knee to your chest until you are nearing the water and point the board downwind for landing. You want to have a flat board coming down on the water, rather than trying to land on an edge. Having the board flat allows for it to catch you with the most surface area on the water without sinking in or falling on your back. Get all of your weight centered over the board as you land and then pull in on the bar. If you need to do a few power strokes to get back on plane that is okay. It's better to lose some ground downwind and ride away than crash and have to reset.
    So that's it for this week! I hope this video helps you get your first jumps or simply jump a little better.
    Stayed tuned for more!
    Thanks,
    Blake

    Really nice tip to remember to breath between jumps. I`ve had the bad habit of not breathing when things go wrong but now learning to take crashes calmly. Especially when snowkiting It can be a bit devastating to fall so learning to breath easy makes learning a lot easier.

    Also I was learning how to sit on the foil while watching your vids. A friend gave me a really good tip. Instead of placing your hand flat down on the board, grab the rail where your fingers are underneath and palm on top. This way you have the ability to pull and push on the front on the board when your balance isn't working out exactly the way you want it to. Works like a charm!...until the next crash;)

    Hey Blake, always respected your teaching style and demeanor. Great job!!! So, thanks for the continued tips. On this particular video I found 2 things that seemed a bit off to me and wanted to confirm. I'm what most would consider an intermediate to advanced rider and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these tips are geared towards beginners? Over the last couple years I learned that sheeting in AFTER your line tension pulls you off the water (as opposed to sheeting in to GET you off the water) gets you a bit higher due to lack of surface tension...correct? For years (and still now a bit), I also sheet out at the apex, but for hang time and sometime control (as well as kite specific control: i.e Cores tend to fly better ACROSS the window when descending), keeping the bar sheeted in throughout the jump can produce higher and longer jumps. Please let me know what you think. Thanks

    Could you maybe elaborate on the sheeting out part a bit? Most tutorials recommend not sheeting out the bar during the jump, only after you've landed. In my personal experience sheeting out usually results in the kite overflying and sometimes even front-stalling.

      Hey Robert, the reason for sheeting out on the kite is so that it doesn't pull you downwind or swing you under the kite. By sheeting out, it adjusts the angle of the canopy to float you rather than drop you into the landing. You can still land with the bar pulled in, it just makes for faster and harder landings. As you sheet out, you also want to steer the kite down with you. This will prevent it from overflying or stalling. Cheers!

      @@blakeolsen9762 I'd love a vid on this because the timing of that confused me. Most people think sheeting it is like pulling the cord for a drop

      Yes please explain more about timing of sheeting out, this is the first time I have heard that. I this tip only for small jumps, or for orbit only?

    • @hoverparagliding
      @hoverparagliding 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes same here I'm afraid, first time I've heard about sheeting out, Is the timing of it at the apex of the jump?? Is it a quick sheeting out or a gradule one? Nice video as always👍🏻

      Im also a bit confused with this sheeting out. Most vids recommend keeping the bar sheeted in while landing. Sheet out helps after a high kiteloop to give the kite time to catch you by opening the canopy and come above you . In normal jumps with the kite more or less above you sheeting out i guess will make the fall harder. Probably Blake means you sheet out so the kite stays above you and then while steering the kite to the front b4 landing you sheet in again. Is that so?

    With front knee you mean youre straight leg right?

      Great question, my friend. 🤙🏽 Yes, your forward leg would be straighter than your back leg while loading up for your jump. Good winds! -Aaron

    Thanks for the tips! I have a question about the shoulder twist into the wind: I tried this in the past but it resulted in a backroll (or half backroll... ). Would you have any advice to avoid it?

    • @olsenadventures
      @olsenadventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bring your front knee to your chest to keep a low center of gravity. This will stop the rotation from happening. Leaning back with your legs extended swing your feet out from under you causing the rotation. Hope that helps!

    Hello I just started kiteboarding and i am looking to bouy my first kite. Because of complications in my country I have a small amount of options. Do you recomend a begguiner starting in a C shaped kite. More specifically a 2019 Vegas. Thank you for the videos they help out a lot

      Hey Cristobal, sorry it’s hard to buy kite gear in your country. I would highly recommend NOT getting a C kite shape to learn. It makes learning much harder and will hold you back. The Vegas is for pro riders.

    When you go like 8-10-12 m high,do you need to put the bar away, or you have bar close on all the time

    • @olsenadventures
      @olsenadventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No matter how high you go, if you sheet the kite out as you descend with the kite at the edge of the window, it will float you down. You can also loop it which requires pulling in on the bar but that’s a different technique.

    Sheeting out when you land? If you steer the kite correctly when you land you really float above the water

    Sheet out when you steer the kite to 12? Then your steering lines don't have any tension so your input of steering is zero...

    • @olsenadventures
      @olsenadventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sheet out as you are coming down with the kite at the edge of the window. This will keep it under control. Disregard the advice if you like, it’s just something I’ve found that I do that helps.

    • @fysalides1

      depending of the wind. If there is strong wind then its easy sheeting out when approaching the moment to steer up the kite and turning the board into the wind. Then you sheet in. In lighter winds you might loose tension ..then you have to quickly sheet out just b4 you sheet in for the jump..
