  • Apparently the fuel filter housings can leak air on the 100 Series, so I'm going to test a new one with a transparent fuel hose. Spoiler alert - it doesn't fix my smoking issue.

What about deposits in the exhaust not burned away? Just a thought as my old discovery smoked when I bought it, put new exhaust on n only smokes when your hard on accelerator , cut exhaust up n it was full of oily mess

This one only smokes when cold. As soon as it's warm the problem completely goes away!

I don't think it's a fuel problem, looks like it's burning oil or coolant, head gasket possibly.

Definite oil burning happening. I think something serious like you say. We've eliminated all the easy stuff now.

I second the head gasket. These gaskets will just separate slightly when they go bad and so coolant and oil will leak into the cylinders. your long starts are indicative of some leaking into the cylinders building up while it sits, and that is causing the large amount of smoke on initial startup. headgasket replacement is cheaper than the fuel pump. I would start there before investing in a new pump. your pump seems to be operating just fine to me @@landcruiserscotland

That's good advice. My next course is to get a compression test, and hopefully we can learn about the head gasket too.

If your car is running and driving ok?? Why would you not just drive it for a while and see if it uses engine oil (pointing to piston rings or valve seats), or water (pointing to head gasket) rather than spending £1k on an injection pump?

It isn't using oil or water. It's a process of eliminating the low cost items first, before doing the expensive bits. If I'm keeping the car long term I'm quite happy to invest the money in the pump and whatever else needs fixed.

If its not misfiring or spluttering etc and the only symptom is smoke, I personally would just be driving it, rather than fitting a new pump

The smoke on the first few minutes is so bad it fills up the street. I live in a residential area so I can't gas them out! It won't pass inspection smoking like this. I want to keep the car a long time so I want it to be right.

      It misfires when cold
