It’s called the Serena curse. So many players give their all to beat Serena and then fail to measure up after. They ALL end up falling off. Playing the Williams Wall took a lot out of their best opponents from the late 90s-late 10s.

The thing I like most of Serena is that she didn't play against her opponents but she played with them and toyed them, were as her opponents played against her and mostly with a bitter taste and resentment, this always made them losers, win or losing the match.....

Another great edition. If you do a second one, I think you could include Lucie Safarova, Flavia Pannetta, and possibly A. Radwanska. Each of them got beat handily by Serena on several occasions, but gave her multiple tough matches. Or perhaps an edition of players who Serena beats normally, but gave her that one tough match--but still lost.
Yes, I really enjoyed the match between Pennetta and Serena in Toronto 2015, and I've always wondered if at the US Open Flavia would have been able to beat Serena.

What about an edition of players whom Serena beat normally, but who gave her that one tough match and won?
For instance R. Vinci or M. Sharapova?
1) Tournaments Serena’s won without dropping a set.
2) The 48 matches Serena’s won after dropping a set.
Serena won only 73 of the 240 tournaments she played. Which is only 30 %.
Steffi won 50 % of her tournaments.
Serena has by far the worst numbers of the “Big Five“.
Her slam count may look impressive. But she won most of her slams in the 2010s which had the worst fields since the late 1950s. Safina, Safarova, Zvonareva and other mugs as slam final opponents! 😆

I have far more respect of Hingis who beat peak 1996 Steffi as a 15-year-old.
Or a 16-year-old Seles who beat Steffi even twice in 1990.
Or even 17-year-old Sharapova who humiliated peak Serena in the Wim 04 final.

Who can argue that this Woman Serena is the best female that has ever held a Tennis Racquet!! The way and manner she plays her Tennis; there is no argument that both she and Venus have raised the bar of the Women’s Game at WTA ever to such an unreachable heights. No female in the history of the game can top this style of attacking and powerful and domineering Tennis. Serena at her best is the best ever…..and what’s frightening is that she never really reached her Athletic Best in her career. 🙏🏾💥☄️💫⚡️🌪❤️💎👑👑😍

I think 2013-2014 Serena was at her athletic best for her.
While I actually do agree that she, in my opinion, is the greatest. I think there are strong cases to be made for both Steffi and Martina, particularly Martina, considering how many matches she played in singles, doubles and mixed and dominated in all categories. In retrospect, Steffi was literally one set away from winning 2 calendar grand slams in a row and her 1989 season (winning 3 out of 4 slams) is one of the most impressive seasons in women's tennis. I think the greatest is Serena then Martina then Steffi.
@@alexpiper1115 Alex, I know you agree with my comment and thank you so much for that; but if you read what I wrote carefully I was referring to the ‘Game-Style’ and NOT accolades or the number of titles!! The reason why the entire WTA Commentators & Legends led by Billie-Jean all proclaim that the Williamses raised the bar of the Women’s Game is because of their ‘Game-Style’ and dominance. When they arrived on the scene they almost made Steffi obsolete and if you remember how brilliant Steffi was athletically and how she also dominated Navratilova with an improvement in movement and sheer power. The Williamses raised the standard even higher with their speed around the court getting to every ball, turning defence into ferocious attack, big and faster serves, devastating return of serve, introduction of the ‘Drive Volley’, standing deep in the baseline to threaten opponents serve etc. Just a higher level of aggressive Tennis. Everyone was in awe of their Game Style even before they turned professional!! I witnessed all this in the early to mid ‘90s. A lot was written about those two and we saw them arrive on Tennis Courts and they delivered. I don’t think Serena or Venus allowed themselves to reach their very very best because they Never played a full calendar but just fewer tournaments every year, injuries, Serena playing with a quarter of her lungs removed, susceptibility to Blood Clots and still beating everyone, Venus’s form dipping because of Sjogren Syndrome a debilitating illness that she has lived with since 2010! So in terms of dominating Game Styles, I’ll rank the Williamses Nõ 1, followed by Steffi then Davenport, Capriati, Sharapova, Hingis then Navratilova.
McHale really did peak against Serena out of nowhere. Lmao she was never bringing it against top players, then all of a sudden against Serena she was hitting 115+ serves.

Everybody always want to beat the best. They figure if they beat the best they themselves can become the best. They know they got to bring it to get it.
First name that came to my mind was Zheng Jie. I never understood why Serena always struggled against her.

Retrievers really frustrate Serena. The Williams sisters like other aggressive baseliners use power to their advantage. If you managed to return balls despite their huge serves and powerful backhands, etc. that is going to annoy them. They’re forced to move around the court more and use a variety of shots. Everyone knows wrongfooting someone and getting them on the run is an effective way to better neutralize your opponent.
Zheng Jie was more than a wall. She also likes and was not afraid to attack Serena serve and her backhand was devastating. Just sad she couldn't pull out at least one match or playing at her peak more than few matches.
Serena was the greatest she got to many finals she never beat the record. But she's a legend only one Serena once in a lifetime a tennis player like her is born
It’s always has been Serena vs Serena in every match for me. If she wants it, probably Venus & Justine are the only who could stand a chance to come out with a win facing peak Rena.
