When I was in college, I wrote all my lecture notes on paper. Then, I would retype them digitally, adding color coding and the appropriate outline formatting. When I needed to study for an exam, I would print out those notes and use various highlighters to help me remember key items or group things together better in my mind. Using multiple formats helped me solidify the material (because I was writing it several times, whether on paper or digitally). Double review!

Oh man I do the other way around, I use digital notes for scratch/scribble notes during a lecture since it’s an infinite scroll for the day and use my physical notebook to take the time and make pleasing notes for study, since I can’t really study or focus on an electronic device

I like to rewrite my notes every week and make them as visually appealing as possible. This forces me to study on a week by week basis. Whenever I have an exam or a paper I like to type up all of my notes. This forces me to study cumulatively. Repetition works best for helping me to memorize concepts.
Thanks for sharing! your content always inspires me to get to work.

so you use digital notes at first and only use physical notes to study right? I'm very confused on how to use both :/

    • @maximus7947

Repetition is actually very inefficient, as you have to put everything into a context and actively recall it
copying everything is inefficient too because you also repeat everything you already know

I started digital notes because there is a voice option. It will type what you say. So, in class my teachers talk and the notes are there! I prefer this because when i write, my hands get cramps and the teacher talks to fast!! Also printing it out is good! I do this is World History.

My lecturers put everything on an online portal for us to access but I handwrite nearly everything - powerpoint notes, spoken lecture notes, some readings, laboratory work, discussions, activities. But this could just be because I'm a science student who does a lot of practical work. I will type some of my readings but then I print them and annotate/highlight further. Basically I have a massive folder filled with loads of paper which is all my work 😊

I bought an iPad so I could use the Apple Pencil to take digital hand written notes. I’m an environmental science major so there’s a lot of diagrams and visual explanations which I need to note down and writing notes digitally means that I can try a few times with the drawings without my notes looking messy. It also saves paper and money since I don’t have the buy a new pen every 2 weeks

Does the iPad and apple pencil make an annoying sound when you write with it? I guess I could get used to that annoying tapping sound but I don’t want to annoy others since we have pretty small quiet classes and I love studying in the library.

Liza Saakadze it actually doesnt it mainly depends on what type of screen protector and stylus you have the apple pencil and almost any other stylus doesnt make any sound w a screen protector (i suggest a matte screen protector since its easier for writing prevents fingerprints light glare (when the sun or any light source bounces onto ur screen) but it sometimes can lower the color tone and discolor it but dw that rarely happens but i suggest doing research on digital notetaking and screen protectors etc. ik i have a late response sorry for that but i hope my suggestion helps if u have any questions dont be afraid to reply to me im not an expert but i did do heavy research still am but ill try my best to help out others hope ur doing well !)

Brilliant video as usual 😊 I'm in my first yr studying English at uni and so far I've found that for me handwriting my notes is easier and quicker ...but then I'll type up only the bits that are pertinent for my assignment question. I find that way I don't get lost in sea of unnecessary information. Another thing that I do is take a quick pic or bookmark a web page of any secondary scources that I use so I can keep track of my reference/bibliography lists (made the mistake last yr in college of not writing where I'd gotten a piece of brilliant info, and couldn't for the life of me find it again. Definitely learned from that! lol).

I know I'm late but I wanted to give my 2 cents.
Whenever I use digital, I always find my self struggling to grasp the material, and having to visit it multiple times. However, when I handwrite, I don't feel as if I have to do that.
Digital is far more convenient though, which I feel has made me more lazy. I feel like copying and pasting more than actually typing things out.
Overall, I find that the best way to motivate myself to work is handwriting, because I have to work harder.

I prefer to use paper cause I can't type fast enough. I doodle a lot in my notes cause I use lots of symbols instead of words, it makes it easier for me to write and memorize. Plus a notebook is easier to carry and I can leave it anywhere without having to worry about it getting stolen.

I'm the kind of person that really sucks at being organized, but gets very anxious if stuff isn't neatly organized. When I hand-write my notes, they're all over the place, I fail to find the information I need when reviewing which makes me even more anxious. However, when I use my tablet-laptop hybrid for note-taking, I am able to organize everything neatly and know where to look for something when I need it.
I know that hand-writing actuallly helps memorize better. However, for some reason, I find reviewing the notes I wrote digitially much more easier to memorize.

I’m all for hand written notes!! I just find it more engaging and I am able to do more with it- I can draw diagrams, arrows, section things off here and there, make side points, etc. I can’t even plan a paper on the computer because I feel that it’s too disorganized and confusing on the word processor rather than having an organized template of notes on paper, I even write my rough drafts on paper before typing it out as well!! It gives me a more visually understood structure where I am able to edit my paper and notes that make it more efficient when typing, in my opinion.

At my university all courses provide you with the PowerPoint lecture slides. In previous years I printed these out because I turn into a zombie if I type notes. However, this quickly proved to be very impractical. I was using so much paper, ink and time printing out PowerPoints containing a hundred slides. This year I purchased a stylus for my IPad so I am able to download all the powerpoints given to a notebook(I use Goodnotes) and still handwrite and additional notes! Now instead of carrying around multiple notebooks and a heavy MacBook Pro I just have one slim notebook for paper and a light iPad mini!

Hi Caitlin! Love your channel and your insta! ❤️
Personally, I am the creative person where digital doesn’t help me until it comes down to making study guides. For notes this semester, I write everything based on the power-points my professors tend to provide and color code sections and important pieces of information. Once I start making a study guide for an exam to really hone down the information, I type it up with questions asked in black, and my answers in blue. While looking for the answers for a study guide, I’m internally studying and remembering information because I’m rewriting them again and again. The study guide is then printed and I go from there. I remember information Best this way.
    Hope this helps someone else!

I’m a fiction writer and when I’m formulating ideas, I need to write them down on physical paper with proper fountain pen. Then I digitally organise these chunks into pre-first draft chapters or sections (short stories) on my iPad, sometimes even writing them on GoodNotes. Then I put all these sections together as my first draft on words, properly typed up. Then when it comes to polishing, I’ll export the drafts back to GoodNotes, so I could annotate as I hate words document annotation, though my editors would do that and I have to deal with that later on. Then I would go back to edit the typed up draft. When I was a university 2-3 years ago, as much as I enjoyed having my iPad for note taking, when I study for exams or planning essays, I need to use physical paper. For exam revision, I needed to be able to flip through in order to properly learn certain facts.

And for my readings in preparation for class I actually make hand written notes. I bought these a5 muji notebooks and assigned a book for each module. This is just so I can fully soak in the info and just have a bit more fun with colourful pens. ☺️

Other than calc and orgo chem I usually type my notes in class, then write out my notes for exams. I’ve been using one note for 4 years now and I love it, I’m looking at getting an Apple Pencil so I can draw things in easier

  • @irreadings
    @irreadings 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I take notes by hand, on paper. I like to draw a lot while I study, because sometimes the teachers ramble and sincerely there isn't any worthwhile input there. I write down what is important and draw around it. I also like to sometimes write things in different alphabets because I'm a nerd for language learning, and that isn't as seamless a process on digital environments as it is on pen and paper.
Obligations, such as assignments and tests, these I put on Google Calendar and keep them on a widget in a section of my cellphone's home screen. Since I'm a creature that's often in a hurry, I tend to not pay the attention I should to this widget. I manage my to-dos on Habitica, and I have it set daily there: "Check Google Calendar for future obligations". If I don't do it, I lose virtual health, so I always do it. It works for me.

This year I've been gravitating towards digital note taking because I'm in a 2 seminars and an English class where the prof talks slow enough that I can catch up (he also puts a lot of his notes on the class' online platform). Otherwise, I'm usually better at writing my notes by hand. For the last 3 years, all of my notes - most of my notes- are written by hand. Sometimes it's good, other times no so good.

in college i usually take rough notes on a scarp paper then rewrite them nicely at home to oprtimize my revision and for better understanding of concepts. however i am concerned how rewriting my notes made me waste a lot of paper and i dont know how to solve this

  • @jamiesbooksandstuff
    @jamiesbooksandstuff 5 ปีที่แล้ว

ALL of my notes are handwritten for three reasons.
    1. Writing things down does actually help you remember things
    2. My reading comprehension isn’t that great when I’m reading a huge chapter in a textbook, plus my ADD kicks in when I’m not actively doing something.
    3. I’m an engineering major, so all of my classes are either math, science, or memory based, or a mixture of all three in some cases.
I hate how much time it takes, but I come away from it knowing all of the practice quiz questions and being really prepared so I guess it’s worth it.
I also copy down the PowerPoints the professor uploads sometime before the lecture. That way, I have an idea of what’s going to be taught and I’m not scrambling to write things down while they’re talking so I forget to listen. I’m a visual/audio learner so someone telling me things while pointing at slides with pictures is actually a great compliment to me writing down my notes.

Personally I type lecture notes, if there are problems that come up I will have paper next to me and write down everything. I'll scan it in or when I get home rewrite it on my drawing tablet to insert. Then I'll organize my notes then usually print it out later or leave it digital depending on the notes. If I do reading notes, I do paper because it relaxes me and prevents me from getting distracted. I also have dyslexia mixed with poor eye sight so I take longer to read, especially on the computer as it hurts my eyes so if it's digital reading I can go longer on paper than staring at a screen.

So I take a photo of the music or download a PDF of it and put it into GoodNotes on my iPad where I can scribble on it, and with a click of a button I can see it without the scribbles too. I've gravitated to using digital note-taking on my laptop lately mainly because some of my modules are heavy or there are too many lecture slides. It's mainly to help me efficiently organize my notes. So far, I'm struggling with handwriting said notes on paper because of the heavy information and my chicken scratch handwritting, but one thing that helped me to summarize all my notes on paper is to use mindmaps or diagrams.
I'm currently using the fishbone diagram which just helps me to organize my notes and make it look somewhat neater.

    For me ,
    • Physical for things that u need to memorize , explore creativity , and need more thinking .
( U are more likely to remember and do things if u write them) I tried paper like and apple pencil but it still feels uncomfortable , it has still to improve to reach the comfort of paper.
    • Digital for thing that u don't have to memorize and just store or practice or to make the final product , etc .
( Imagine cloud disappeared one day )
    • People say they use digital to save Nature , then what about the radioactive material that is harmful for everyone . We haven't found how to tackle radioactive materials and we keep adding on it .So for people who say they use digital to save Nature , no u don't ,maybe u do but not as much as u think. Plus it screens damage ur eyes ,and also affects the part that controls the eyes , and also the area around that part which is part used for memorization . So it affects eyes and brain both , and also the radiations aren't good . Some Articles say it doesn't affect much but they say this so caus ethey want to sell. If they tell u truth u won't use much and they will not get money , so they see their profit in it.
    • U can by using less paper , like using paper only for notes , and practice digitally cause practice takes more paper . And notes that u don't need , or books that u don't need , u can use unused parts of them for calculations or practice as well .
