  • "Burn Down the Mission" taken from the new vinyl release 17-11-70+. Recorded in New York City 17th November 1970.
I've edited the new vinyl release with some sound clips from older releases which include more of the original spoken portions of the show.

I saw Elton, Dee and Nigel 2 days before this was recorded. It's a concert I will never forget. I was about 10 rows back and dead center. The electricity cut out to Dee and Nigel about 10 minutes into the concert so Elton just winged it by playing Christmas songs. All of a sudden he stopped, ran off stage and came back with a piece of notebook paper. He said Bernie and he had just finished a song. He launched into Indian Sunset. That night his version of Burn Down The Mission was just as wild as this one - if not more so. It easily went on as long as this one. Everyone in the audience was blown away. Some one said he had bloody fingers. Sorry to rain on your parade but I was only 10 rows back and didn't see any bloody fingers.
That said this was easily one of my top three concerts ever.

These are three mighty fine musicians at the top of their game performing here, all performing as men possessed. The passion and hunger are just overwhelming. I always appreciated and envied the small but tuned-in studio audience. What they lacked in number they made up for in enthusiasm. They seemed to appreciate exactly what it was they were witnessing --a rock legend in his infancy, and rock history in the making.

This album on 8-track tape in my VW Bug, was the soundtrack to many adventures in 1972. Still my favorite of his albums. Dee and Nigel deserve awards!

I bought this album the day it came out. I had a friend in New York City who was at the concert (radio station), and said this album was a "must have". IMHO, it is the best of Elton live. I have listened to it hundreds of times, and every time I am blown away. Maybe the greatest rock pianist, composer, musician and entertainer on the keyboard. The music flows from his fingers. He can improvise on the spot. Thanks for posting this.

Keep in mind there are only three musicians making this music, Elton - Piano and vocals, Dee Murray on bass and Nigel Olsen on drums.....PERIOD!

Worse decision Elton ever made was to ditch Dee and Nigel after Captain Fantastic.

Which is probably why he got them back ultimately. But yeah you are right, Elton went thru a phase of sorts, with his love of "Columbian dandruff".@@paullaw3382

Early in his career.....yet at THE TOP of his game. My favorite Album of his......by far. Thanks for endeavoring to "make it known". The early 70's brought us most of The Best & most talented mucic, bands, & musicianship, that the modern era has ever seen. Queen & Aerosmith opened for Mott The Hoople, out of which came Bowie's work plus Bad Company. John Mayhall out of England gave us Taylor who propelled The Stones as well as Clapton, Winwood, Beck, & Zeppelin. The Allman Brothers & Skynryd were kicking in gear. Not to mention The Beatles, Elvis, The Who, The Kinks, Hendrix, Joplin, CSN, & other Woodstock performers. And we can't forget Dylan, The Byrd's, The Righteous Brothers, Mama Cass, Grace Slick, James Taylor & Neil Young. There are many more that space forbids. That time period Can Not be equaled nor replaced

By the time Elton finished his 18 minutes playing this one his fingers were bloodied as it was reported back then. This is still my favorite version of Burn Down The Mission.

I'm annoyed this was the version of Burn Down The Mission I heard first, cause the studio version just pales in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but this just takes it to a whole new level.

Hi, I bought this new version on vinyl (2 LPs), but I couldn't download by link provided. Did you get? A hug

The download link I got with the vinyls worked for me eventually (I had to request a new code), but even then it was just the first disc, which is the one that had already been released. So, what you hear in my videos is the digital recording I made directly from the vinyls.
