Just regular IRVs but when they are not responding/dealing with a call for service they deploy to an allocated area to patrol, or to use their jargon "target" a particular Basic Command Unit (local area) Many forces adopt this method of having IRV units patrol a specific BCU/Area within a District in response to emerging crime hotspots, public reassurance, community tension etc. My local force call them Community Patrol Team, but the one it borders onto call them District Response Team. Much like the COVID legislation, it's the government who ultimately create and ratify the laws, and irrespective of what law it is it's the duty of the police and partner agencies such as NCA, HMRC, RMP etc to enforce it. They can obviously use their professional discretion, but they often get attacked for either being too harsh or too lenient. These protests should have been taking place in Westminster, outside or parliament or Number 10. Why attack Bobbies in Avon & Somerset? Especially seen as during last large scale protest they stood back and didn't interfere as a statue was toppled and hurled into the River?! I doubt the Met TSG or GMP TAG boys and girls would have been so lenient...

Protest - organised, generally quite orderly demonstration. Riot - disturbance with violence etc. It's clear it turned from a protest to a riot, it began earlier in the day as a demonstration disapproving of the policing Bill and then turned violent (see smashing into The Bridewell nick as an example) as darkness fell.
@@SleepExports some aspects were, absolutely. The violence and disorder with toppling of the statue in Bristol as a prime example. Like Sunday in Bristol, there were also other parts consistent with that of a demonstration.
