@@BraveryWing26 yeah when I wrote this comment I didn’t read the manga yet. I was very surprised when I realized it was the scriptwriter of the anime who wrote the original script for the movie.

I'm one of the rare folks who saw Shin first, before any of the series or OVAs. Even without knowing the context beforehand, it still hit me in all the feels. The wonderful music by Yuki Kajiura definitely helped as well.
I love this movie specifically because it takes a light hearted romcom series that had a seeemingly copout ending where Madoka was confirmed to be the main love interest and turns it into this coming of age movie where the characters, while set in a more depressing tone, still act the way you’d expect. Hikaru is clingy, so when Kasuga finally says how he feels, she isn’t going to accept that. She doesn’t accept the situation and, frankly, acts childish. It’s completely in character. The love triangle was there, but we all knew that Madoka was the true main girl, which lead to almost a feeling of dread. And this film’s depressing tone builds off of that. Hikaru and Kasuga’s relationship was much more like puppy love that wouldn’t last. The ending doesn’t have the message of “well life sucks”. It ends when Kasuga and Madoka being a college couple while Hikaru is still the lead in the play. She even ends the film by doing a playful “bang!”, bookending the film with the message “life goes on”. It’s legitimately a masterful ending to an amazing slice-of-life, romcom. Thanks to Retro Crush, I got to discover one of my new favorite anime.
very cliche in cinema since the black and white days, but train departing farewell scenes (a la Galaxy Express 999) always hit me in my old-fashioned feels. For me, Maison Ikkoku was right up there as well. Edit: more recently, didn't My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU have a similarly heartbreaking denouement to their love triangle (though Hikki was WAY more tactful/compassionate in his rejection)? As Io Fleming from Gundam Thunderbolt would say: "Kleenex wo totte kure" ugh
@@hitachicordoba The irony was Hikki was more anti-social towards people and in expressing his feelings than friendlier Kyosuke. I'm a fan of both KOR and SNAFU and appreciate the resolutions for each respective triangle. SNAFU was more upbeat with the two female leads still cherishing and retaining their friendship after the big decision. The KOR movie still packs an emotional wallop.
I just started the series. I always figured that deep down Hikaru knew that he didn’t love her. At least not in the way that she loved him. She’s guilty of emotionally manipulating him more than once. That being said, she was very brutally treated in this movie.
Was a long time ago I watched this series - thinking back now - both girls had their quirks, but fell in love; same can be said for the guy too and, but he had always been leaning in one direction & he made a decision on it. Was good show.
You can just feel the exact emotions that hikaru feels in this. It was really hard for her to move on after all this time. I just want to give her a hug and tell her that it hurts now but it will get better in time.
Man, watching their friendship devolve was heartbreaking to watch, especially the end when Kyosuke remembers Ayukawa showing him a photo album of her and Hikaru as small children. We see there, near the end, what was truly lost, the close knit friendship between these three. That’s gone now. :(
The sad thing about it was that we all saw it coming. The friendship of the three was a ticking time bomb with both Madoka & Hikaru sharing feelings for Kyosuke and while Kyosuke's heart is with Madoka, he still enjoyed Hikaru's time and company up until the point where both the girls pressed him to make a decision he wasn't willing to make but knew that he had to. It's heartbreaking but we all had a feeling it was bound to happen at some point.
I like how the guy was not wishy-washy about his feelings towards his girl. he made it clear through his words and body language that he was no longer interested in her and while he was not cruel, he was very firm with her that whatever relationship they had was over. at the end, I was expecting him to grab an umbrella and go out and take it to her, but I can see the pragmatism of not doing that because this is the type of girl that any sign of kindness towards her. She will see as an inkling of hope of relationship continuing.
He was not honest with her and he did have sex with her. If he loved Madoka since the beginning, why playing with Hikaru feelings because it’s confortable for him to be loved by her because Madoka rejected him in the beginning
But you know, I still like this ending better than what we got in the manga. Here you see Kyosuke actually maning up on his own and making a choice even if it's a tough one. In the manga he stays useless and indecisive all the way through, and Hikaru herself has to push him to go after Madoka at the end. That was such a let down.
came to comments just for this but damn, this was rough. (stumbled on this by accident) Maybe I should watch it but I definitely would not be able to take it. Is there a particular reason why he made his choice of prefering madoka? I mean it even if he does man up to tell her he just seems so unpleasant and Hikaru seems pretty insane...from this clip.
It hits differently when you’ve watched the whole series. Kyosuke has been trying to date madoka since the beginning and hikaru always had come on strong with her feelings and gotten in the way. This ending makes you feel very conflicted, since you are relieved that the tension of the love triangle is going away, but feeling bad that Hikaru needs to be hurt in order to make that happen. It was nice to see a series play it out instead of leaving the relationships unresolved or forcing an amicable ending in when it wouldn’t follow from the characters’ personalities.
Hahah. That's what I remember from the manga - he played them both! In the anime, Hikaru came off as more forceful and bold, which made it somewhat easier to push her away.
How can this be considered "maning up" when he just runs away without actually telling her face to face like a proper man? He's just a pussy while Hicaru is a keeper. She's got more balls than he does 😆!
The era when cinematic characters were still allowed to show emotions, to chase after, to celebrate and get heart broken over love without being labeled creepy or psychotic
ngl it may have been all fairies and games because they were a bit younger, but The more clingy she got overtime, the more anxiety it gave me to see him and madoka continue to expand territory within their friendship with one another because deep down everyone knew this had to happen😢 and it was just gonna hurt more because of how much time the 3 of them spent together.
After such a long series of gags, this ending was shockingly raw and real in a way that I was 0% prepared for. All that time they played the love triangle up like it was fun and games, and then when someone gets hurt the fun stops and it’s just sad. You can’t even say she’s pathetic though with how long he led her on. By taking so long Kasuga to man up and decide, stole some of the best years of her life and ruined her relationship with her best friend
@D DOG yeah the director of this movie said that Yuusaku was absent because he could have been just a distraction and he wanted that the viewers attention was at the 100% focused on the 3 main characters. I'm too I'm happy that he wasn't involved in the movie and hate him but I still would have get a explanation about his absence.
I was a bit more fortunate, as I saw the second movie first. It provides some of the context before giving everyone a measure of closure. However, even knowing how things finally ended,... I felt my guts being ripped out when I finally saw this one, seemingly hurting even worse knowing that it was coming.
My first exposure to this series was through Shin KOR, which I loved despite not knowing any of the characters or the backstory. It was really nice seeing this clip to help supplement the relationship I never saw. I’m a sucker for coming of age stories. Someone is chopping onions nearby 😭
Shin KOR was my first exposure as well. It was all one could find on VHS at the time, without having to go to a specialty store and pay double the normal price. I adored SKOR, and still do. And even knowing how things finally ended,... watching this movie and knowing what was coming, it still hurt like hell.
I don't feel "saddened". Let's go through the beginning of the situation. First impression of Kasuga by Hikaru is her mouthing off at him for no reason aside from him looking. Then we go from that, to her shallow spark of a crush by watching him get a basketball through a hoop (via power). Mind you, SECONDS before this, she outright INSULTED his family by calling his sisters bratty and called him a "creep" (just cause...he was bouncing a ball in his private contemplations...). Okay. Then he accidentally ran into her with an accidental kiss, and WITHOUT HIS CONSENT, claimed them as dating and proceeded to call him "Darling". The rest of the show had her jump on him, cling to him, force herself on him, interpreted things said to her own fantasy and distortion of reality, and actively wrenched her way to interrupt (which we now know was purposeful thanks to the reveal of the film) when Kasuga tries to approach Madoka. Then in this clip, she's borderline obsessive and nearing creepy. Like yandere vibes. I get it, the rejection was hard to swallow (and I prefer the anime having Kasuga man up compared to the manga, but I can see why the manga went for a less serious ending because the whole love for him by Hikaru started off with lack of depth/shallowness and it got respectfully treated as such), but waiting for him on his path home? Waiting outside his apartment, throwing tantrums, grabbing him without letting go, etc. I was apalled. Flip the genders please. See if you'd still "feel bad". Gawd, how else should he have handled the crazy presented here? I would have filed a restraining order personally. Furthermore, were they ever really "together"? He denied they were lovers, and at one point in the series, straight in front of her face, I forgot what specific episode. Then during the "hypnotized" Kasuga phase where he was getting attention from other girls, the way Hikaru talked about the situation made it sound like he more or less had free reign as a single man and could be "taken" away. I was always confused on what their relationship actually WAS? It was really Hikaru and the rest of the school that thought they had a thing, while Kasuga has been visibly reluctant, stand-offish, sometimes distant, and more than once broke away from her during the series run. This is more than naiveté on Hikaru's part. Only someone with zero eyesight capability wouldn't note his behavior, clinical blindness level. It's good that the movie went with her having known the situation and her chase was deliberate on her end compared to the manga. This is a LOT more believable. For him, it has always been Madoka he was interested in. And yes, he's completely at fault for not being more direct since the get-go, that is without a doubt a fact, and it's his greatest character flaw (they push it as indecisiveness, but I feel more like he's a pushover). And it turned from being unsure on how to handle the situation to actively trying not to hurt her feelings and make her sad, which means he found it difficult to stop her antics. Madoka added more complications because IF Kasuga did end up just being honest and hurting Hikaru, she would react coldly or leave him out of sheer guilt, something he clearly picked up on. Therefore they both kept the status quo for Hikaru's sake. But that came with a cost. To be honest, they are all to blame for this hot mess.
Great analysis but this movie feels so real in romantic relationship in teennagers. The movie deliberatly deviates from the comedic settings in the series and takes a sharp turn. They want to tell us that we all have to face the reality one day and this movie really described this part so well.
Well said, completely agreed. I love the series/movie though, powers aside, it's probably the most realistic depiction of teenage relationships I've seen. Way more than alot of other anime with love triangles lol
I hate to say it, but I did not pity Hikaru because she did Yūsaku dirty in the series. But I did wish that he would reappear at the end of the movie. :/
@@zorkmid1083 Not to mention child Hikaru saw teen Kyosuke due to time travel and started dressing like a tomboy because of that (at least in the manga).
@@zorkmid1083 Yeah Ik that. For some reason, the anime skipped the Hikaru part. Kinda wish they didn't. The TV series ending is pretty different from the manga. In the manga, Madoka never goes to the past and discovers Kyosuke's power. In it, Kyosuke goes back to the present and waits under the tree until Madoka returns. She asks what he was doing there and he simply replies "Waiting for you". No kissing. But it was cute in its own way. I understand why the anime did what it did though with it being the series finale and all. It had to be special. But this wasn't the end of the manga. In fact, it goes on for quite a few chapters more. And some stories were never adapted even in OVA form which I wish they were.
@@ak-t7d6f It's a petty way to fall in love, but I would be an ignorant if I don't adress how Kasuga's inhability to choose Madoka before things started growing between him and Hikaru took a huge part in how painfully everything ended. I always though that both Madoka and Hikaru deserved someone better, I expected the series to end in both realizing this, leaving Kasuga and ultimately him learning to stop being so pusillanimous.
Synopsis: Two girls who have no one else become good friends. The older one Madoka Ayukawa is a rather bad ass tom boy and yet gorgeous and statuesque. The younger one Hikaru Hiyama is smaller and adorable, seems harmless but is secretly FULL of potential and super-cute. A boy Kyosuke Kasuga and his family that has to keep moving constantly, due to "super powers", moves into the neighborhood. Instantly, the boy and the older girl click but them being Japanese, communication issues...so the younger one instantly jumps in, before she loses her older sister-like friend, and intercepts the boy and lays it on thick. Then you have years of adventure, whacky high jinx, new city pop music, comedy due to miscommunications, random drama, some odd supernatural stuff, etc. The whole many-season anime, Kyosuke calls Madoka by her last name "Ayukawa" as a formal gesture and Hikaru as "Hikaru-chan" because they're in a relationship, constantly reminding the viewer of which side of the love triangle is the longest (the one connecting Kyosuke and Madoka, who are meant to be together). Everything and anything happens to keep the two destined lovers apart. But eventually the Madoka eventually stops rejecting Kyosuke, rejecting her many reasons to do so from Hikaru to Kyosuke being just some guy to Kyosuke being and unreliable and strange puss of a guy, and learns just how many good qualities there are in the boy. Towards the end, Ayukawa turns into Madoka to Kyosuke, they both acknowledge they should be one and Hikaru loses both her best pal and her boyfriend. However in the end, with the later installment that finishes the story, the couple visits Hikaru at a play she stars in and we see that Hikaru has become a star. She is a darling of directors and a special actor because, she knows real heartache. Also a wonderful piano song. :D The soundtracks for the original TV series are AMAZING especially if you love city pop.
Although I don't aprove of Hikaru's behavior, since the best way to deal with rejection is accepting it in this kind of case, I'll never understand why since Kasuga OBSIOUSLY likes Madoka better he still went out with Hikaru and gave her hopes. Certanly Hikru's behavior isn't the best but I can't ignore the fact that Kasuga played a part in how painful it all ended for the trio in the movie. Maybie I am biased because Kasuga all in all frustrates me as a character because of his pusillanimous attitude, and somehow I should pine for him or whatever since he is one of tha main characters.
Fr, he literally strung along another girl and then decides to dump her fast. I don't agree with how Hikaru dealt with the situation but at the same time I don't blame her. Poor girl
Because Ayukawa never wanted him to break Hikaru's heart and to keep the gang together. When Ayukawa finally got jealous Kyosuke finally did what he had to do.
This is how you end a series in a mature way. Lots of anime end in frustrating ways. I like Shinkai movies but they have endings that are not that great. This one here has closer for real and mature
There was a later OVA of Kimagure Orange Road where Kyosuke's psychic power-gifted cousin Akane visits and could create illusions with her mind and disguises herself as Kyosuke and bluntly turns down Hikaru when she asks for a date (way before the events in this movie took place). That OVA scene was played for laughs with poor Hikaru breaking down and crying with a funny face instead being serious here. Sort of the animators intentionally parodying the final dumping scene from this movie. Madoka makes Kyosuke be nice to Hikaru at the end of the OVA story to make up for things.
The OVA you're referencing is OVA 7, and based on the information in the episode, the OVA is set in summer 1990, which is only a short while before the events of the 1st movie kicks off. Early in the OVA Akane's friends confirm Akane is a Sr in HS. Akane is the same age as Kyosuke & Madoka, as confirmed by dialogue in OVA 4 (July 1989) when Akane first meets Madoka. What Akane did to Hilary isn't clearly resolved by the end of OVA7.
i know i said before that hikaru can be annoying sometimes, what with her acting childish all the time and constantly calling kasuga darling,im not gonna lie,i actually felt sorry for the poor girl after watching this and new kimagure
Say what you will about Hikaru not deserving this, it's true and I agree. But how she kept latching on, following Kyosuke... it's a bit too much. She needed to understand and it was bound to happen. She alone could tell something was off between those two for quite awhile and still decided to ignore it, that's mistake number one. Hikaru was too inmature and even if what happened to her probably left a mark on her, in the future she should take this as a lesson in many ways.
I think this movie makes everyone emphatize with Hikaru, even if she was quite annoying in the series. It's very sad. But the movie works, only because Yūsaku is out of the way, isn't it? Didn't she do basically the same to him?

There is such a thing as being poly. There are people out there who are capable of having relationships with more than one person at a time. Because just like in any monogamous relationship, the same rules apply. Not to mention some people are also okay with open relationships.
Which (if I'm not mistaken) she never actually learns about, does she? Even with the ultimate conclusion three years later, she is still never filled in on what was really happening. Was there a moment in the series or OVA's that I missed, or where they purposefully keeping her in the dark about the Kasuga family's gifts?
In the anime, it was more like he was humoring her. It wasn't all because he was indecisive, part of it was because he honestly liked Hikaru as a cute friend, and part of it was because Madoka (the other girl) didn't want a relationship if it meant hurting Hikaru. So they ended up with a delicately balanced triangle where nobody could make a serious move without upsetting it. Unfortunately, someone finally made a move and upset the whole thing, and this is the result.
I'm glad to see Hikaru treated like this. This girl has been the most irritating character for me in the this cartoon. Since when did it become by force for someone to like/love you back b'cos you like them?
wtf? he literally led her on and gave her hope that he would reciprocate her feelings. she is right to be angry with him after how he strung her along for so long. he could have straight up told her in the first 5 or so episodes that he wasn’t interested.
It's not as sophisticated as stories today, but the series was a pretty good '80s comedy. It was pretty popular among fans then because of the characters and artwork, but I think it will be a harder sell now.
@Mastnaer Ceef What is MHA? There are romcoms which were pretty mainstream but weren't ruined (e.g., Maison Ikkoku). I think it depends on how far the rights holders want to take the merchandising.

He was not honest with her and he did have sex with her. If he loved Madoka since the beginning, why playing with Hikaru feelings because it’s confortable for him to be loved by her because Madoka rejected him in the beginning
@@hanasalem-666 No, he didn't have sex with her but he kissed her.
i forgot how emotional this movie made me
But you know, I still like this ending better than what we got in the manga.
Yes, this version is better than the manga. And this is so sad... That I almost forgot how annoying Hikaru was all the time.
This is one of the greatest anime of all time, an eternal classic
Yeah and this movie for me could be even consider one best anime movie ever.
Because sometimes you are so down you gotta watch a young girl's heart shoved through a shredder.
RIP, Hiromi Tsuru (Madoka, Bulma from Dragonball).

Man this still hits hard after so many years…..32 years….yikes….
I hope Hikaru found someone else and got happiness😊
Yusaku?
@D DOG yeah the director of this movie said that Yuusaku was absent because he could have been just a distraction and he wanted that the viewers attention was at the 100% focused on the 3 main characters. I'm too I'm happy that he wasn't involved in the movie and hate him but I still would have get a explanation about his absence.
That guy was there just to show the viewers that Hikaru was no pushover in the looks/attractiveness department.
I can't watch this, it seriously hurts.
Always felt bad for Hikaru.
Man this movie was intense, I wasn’t a big Hikaru fan but I felt bad the way she was treated. But I really wanted Madoka to be with him.
I watched this blind. I had no knowledge of the characters' history - it was still very impactful
I was a bit more fortunate, as I saw the second movie first. It provides some of the context before giving everyone a measure of closure.
However, even knowing how things finally ended,... I felt my guts being ripped out when I finally saw this one, seemingly hurting even worse knowing that it was coming.
That’s not nice to talk to her like that because it would hurt her feelings and her heart
I thought this clip was from when Kyosuke initially breaks up with Hikaru. That scene hits hard.
Where do I begin
To tell the story of how great a love can be....
My first exposure to this series was through Shin KOR, which I loved despite not knowing any of the characters or the backstory. It was really nice seeing this clip to help supplement the relationship I never saw. I’m a sucker for coming of age stories. Someone is chopping onions nearby 😭
you should watch the whole series if you haven’t already
Shin KOR was my first exposure as well. It was all one could find on VHS at the time, without having to go to a specialty store and pay double the normal price.
I adored SKOR, and still do. And even knowing how things finally ended,... watching this movie and knowing what was coming, it still hurt like hell.
@@k1productions87 It’ll hurt me forever 🥰
Wada Kanako singing brings this to another level ❤
What do you think about the second movie? If you have seen it, all three of them have definitely learned from their teenage days.
@@MrSuperjam789just seen it truthfully it's kinda mid. This movie is top tier.
Orange road forever~~~
She fell in love with him because he made a basketball shot, she can take the L
That was the initial spark, but she really fell in love with him over time.
@@zorkmid1083 Not to mention child Hikaru saw teen Kyosuke due to time travel and started dressing like a tomboy because of that (at least in the manga).
@@ak-t7d6f In the anime, Kyosuke influenced Ayukawa to be less of a tomboy and more feminine. Don't think he had any influence on Hikaru.
The soundtracks for the original TV series are AMAZING especially if you love city pop.
Poor girl
Because he did like her and she fed into his ego constantly....
Man this was brutal.
wow that is such a good quality.
Double standards:
Girl dumped not giving up: "Saddest unrequited love story… 😭"
Boy dumped not giving up: "Creepiest stalker in anime history🤮"
He really didn't have to cut her off like that
I know he coulda came clean and told her the truth

Hikaru has been clingy from the beginning and he really never had feelings for her.

In the anime? No. In the manga? Yes.
A bit.
