    On trips through the mountains in winter, I always carry a small shovel. My emergency pack always has candles.

    • @RadiantRealty
      @RadiantRealty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yeah, I do remember my husband saying there was a small shovel in our vehicle somewhere. Great point. That's a definite must! I'll add it to the blog post ;p Why candles and not a flashlight? Matches too then I assume?

    • @IIVVBlues
      @IIVVBlues 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@RadiantRealty For putting on chains or digging snow, a flashlight is fine. Candles in a confined space, like a car with the windows rolled down about a half inch or so, give off heat a well as light. My preference is for a butane lighter, but I do keep matches for back up. A candle is is also a good way to start a fire.

      Yeah, I guess you wouldn't really need to. Are there roads at higher elevations in the mountains there?

      Yeah. Do you travel often in areas without cell service? Our car wouldn't start after our hike at hornet lookout once. That was definitely a helpless feeling. We had protection from wildlife but just even getting back to town was a concern.

    Hi, my husband and I have watched all your videos. They are so informative. We have decided to sell our home and move to the Kalispell area. We were wondering if you had information about short-term rentals in the winter months. We may have to rent for a couple months until we find our forever home. Any information would be very helpful. When I was in high school as a junior with an A average I was allowed to drive a school bus...it was a plus that i lived at the end of the bus route ...boy did that hone my winter driving skills on a 40 mile route in January driving a school bus...lol...all good advice you gave...talk about the benefits of having a tire that you can sipe...siping is almost more valuable than studs...depending on whether you have all wheel , 4 wheel or rear wheel drive... also i live in area of Montana where an engine block heater is mandatory...we get down to minus 35 or colder every year ..the coldest i have personally experienced is minus 54 February 1988... and a quick wiper hint never leave wipers in contact with windshield when you park your rig with a warm windshield lift them off of the window scrape windshield then turn defroster on before you use them, saves a lot of wiper blades, slso switch the windshield washer fluid to the minus 40( or minus 20 depending on where you live) blend....its a life saver....you guys are in the flathead its not so cold but these are still words to live by....

    • @RadiantRealty
      @RadiantRealty  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What???? They let you drive a school bus as a junior in high school? Haha, that's crazy. How times have changed. Yeah, I bet that honed your driving skills real fast! Please tell me that's not allowed any longer ;p So, everything I read said the engine block heater just heats the car up faster but doesn't help with starting it. Is that not true? Sounds like you use it for starting? Was yours factory installed? Great tip about the wiper blades as well. Maybe that's what we did wrong although it's never been that cold here. -6 degrees is the coldest I've seen. I can't even imagine -54 degrees. Were cattle left out in that???

      @@RadiantRealty...Yep they did and none of us messed up...mind you it wasn't so long ago that we all got our licenses when we were 15 and provisional farm licenses when 14....this was the late 70s early 80s... i graduated in 81....it was a responsibility, not taken lightly(although we all siphon free gas as a fringe benefits was expensive it was 73 cents a gallon lol) as we were accustomed to a position of earned responsibility that was expected....to insure all of us access to schooling and taking care of us all...it seems so alien now to not trust teens with that responsibility...but those times seem unlikely to return we were assumed to be capable of it if we preformed accordingly well......engine block heaters do work very well to heat the oil which in turn reduces the wear of a cold start especially with bigger engines (V8 etc)...factory installed or self installed...the cords wear out so you do replace every few years...you do know that Montana has the coldest recorded temp in the contiguous 48 states of minus 70 at rodgers pass and that during the last cold snap a few days ago when you guys were in Helena we had a recorded temp of minus 28 i think near Potomac which was apparently the coldest temp in North america that day , we got down to minus 21 in my neck of the woods...SW Montana in our high valleys is usually way colder than the flathead
