    She reminds me of Greta Garbo, in her life of seclusion and a decision to retire and never to show herself to the world anymore. A very interesting and private person she was. It was an inforamtive video I have seen Hara in a few films, she is the embodiment of charm. She was not only beautiful, she was charming and kind and endearing. It is sad that she never married, but she knew what she was doing and why.

    don't mind the haters... to this Setsuko Hara & eiga fan, this is a brilliant 10 minutes of You Tube genius. This should be featured on the Criterion Collection. Please make more! Melvins / Ornette Coleman / Setsuko Hara ... your range is completely sick in the very best way!

      Thank you! What would be better would be a Danger Mouse type to make a Coleman/Melvins mash-up album. Hostile Sound Grammar or something.

    Excellent video essay! Very informative and entertainin.! I love Setsuko Hara. Both an amazing actress and a fascinating individual with an interesting story. I was introduced to her through Tokyo Story and Late Spring and became a huge fan. Great job!

    Loved this! I've only just discovered Hara, so this was really educational. I loved the framing of the essay with milestones in her life, and the connection to Kon's Millenium Actress! Fantastic!

      Also, I really hope the many condescending comments don't get you down or dissuade you from following your passion. Please know that other viewers see them as the ugly manifestations of gatekeeping that unfortunately so often targets young women in areas like cinema.
      This is clearly a really great piece of work and I hope you're proud of it!

      @@yellow_bird21 Sorry for the late reply. I guess I wasn't receiving all notifications from TH-cam on my videos. The comments are no bother. I'm sure you can find much worse elsewhere on the site and it's not the most bad-faith critique of the video imaginable. I appreciate the feedback. Glad some people are digging the video.

    Although this video could have benefited from a reader who knew how to pronounce Japanese names, it is an intelligent, and useful, summary of the contradictions of Hara's illustrious career. And the clips (some of them quite rare) are great. Good job!

      Thank you! This was made for a one time screening of Tokyo Story, I hope to revisit it once I can find more films (Typhoon Woman specifically and more of her war-time pictures). Ms. Drinnon was a good sport though, and to be fair I have heard commentary tracks on DVDs from experts who also have a hard time with Japanese names.

    Inappropriate American voice narrating, tho’ the commentary is not stupid. Mispronounces her native English. Quacks voice. “The kinda girl...” UGH. Kurasawa doesn’t adopt books, he adapts them for the screen. She makes mistakes likes this pretty regularly. Her pronunciation of Japanese names is atrocious.

      Cinema Adrift You need it. Listen to yourself. Listen to others speaking English professionally, poised, non-nasal voices. To Hara herself. I like your commentary, truly compromised by this little girl delivery...

      @@mckavitt have you considered shutting the fuck up and not condescending to someone who clearly knows what she's talking about and made an excellent video essay

    Good effort BUT watch that awful female "vocal fry". It is the silly scatchy voice very young girls use. Use your big person voice.

    • @yellow_bird21
      @yellow_bird21 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What a mind-bogglingly rude and condescending comment. She does not need your approval of her style of speech. I suggest you look up the many articles about the significance of vocal fry and why it's not "silly". Older generations (particularly men) will always find ways to condescend going women and I see you're partaking in that here.
