    What an excellent idea Sam especially during the severe pandemic lock down. Your recommendations are solid and interesting. We can choose whatever meat or vegetable or seafood to place into the hotpot and enjoy all these with a good beer !🤭😜❤️ Good on you Sam, you did teach us how to enjoy life even when we cannot go outside to eat in a restaurant or cafe. Thanks !🤭🤭🤭🤭♥️❤️😜

    New subscriber here. It's always interesting to see our very own culture through the eyes of foreigners. BTW, those "bean card balls" are not bean curd, or tofu, they're gluten. And thank you for the translation of "公筷", "communal chopsticks". As a translator I need this.

    Can you try McDonald's samurai burger? It is just special food in Hong Kong during lunar new year. I ate it in the past lunar new year.
    It is a burger in teriyaki sauce, my favourite. Besides, may you try some new year food? Like turnip cake? New year cake? Melon seed?crisp pasty?
    By the way, during Buddha festival, no meat is allowed on Cheung Chau Island in tradition. On that day, McDonald in Cheung Chau just serves vegan food and no meat. Therefore, it is a specially designed mushroom burger available on that single day in Cheung Chau only.

    I'd like to know: what is the optimum time to cook meat, shrimp and fishballs? And at what heat? And is it OK to throw the broth down the toilet afterwards?

    • @HongKongHoods
      @HongKongHoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Rob and for your nice questions. The optimum time to cook meat, shrimp and fishballs once the broth has reached a rolling boil is ~30 seconds, ~2 minutes and ~3.5 minutes respectively. For meat and shrimp, go off look. For fishballs, err on cooking longer- a good little tip that generally rings true, is that once your balls are cooked, they will bob vigorously on the surface. No, we wouldn't advise throwing your broth down the toilet afterwards.

    • @rwgarratt
      @rwgarratt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HongKongHoods thanks Sam for your prompt and informative advice! I must confess I've long been a toilet broth polluter ... Which raises the urgent question, how should one then properly dispose of used hot pot broth? It's deeply funky toxic stuff for sure, when done right!

    about the soup base, next time, no need a hot-pot pack, use the chicken soup is ok, some are only 8-9 HKD, well if you being crazy, use Campbell's can be fine, well... some pack can be smaller you can find by LKK, but if you want to taste the food the "original" taste, the "clean soup" especially the "light taste" is highly recommend, cos the meat and the fire will make the soup being "heavy", so if you are joining to some HK frailly Hot Pot party, the common soup is "tofu fish head soup" base, seems talk too far...
    and friendly remind, don't try to roll the pot, just put the food inside, and waiting can eat, cos some of the metrical are easily to break down, and it will raise a "War" in extreme, and some case, it will be for people to locate the food easily
    off topic: in my favorite source, soy(or Maggi) with some break garlic, chili and ginger
