Sterns playing and composition at this time in his life is some of his best work in my opinion. I met him in Montreal and he was such a sweet and genuine guy. All my best to him.

I saw Stern on this tour while studying abroad in Stockholm, Sweden in July 1990. It was at a jazz festival and once he started playing, a few of us went up front and watched Mike with elbows on the stage. He and Bob Berg were incredible.

I was dragged to a free outdoor show of a band I had never heard of that was part of an annual local Jazzfest Weekend that I really did not want to go to by my girlfriend at the time. It was this exact lineup and it was the closest thing to a religious experience that I have ever encountered. It changed my life forever.

Berg's solo has to be exactly what Stern hoped for from the sax part on a tune like this. Man, was he the perfect sideman for Stern or what? His improve is a beautiful as the composition itself. One of the best Stern/Berg clips out there! Thanks!

Bob Berg was the perfect sideman Mike Stern and for Chick Corea in a concert in Tivoli, Copenhagen, as well.
He got the far biggest applaus' for his soli. Far louder and longer than Chick and the others.
Don't remember who else was in the band or the year. Only an lot of jaws dropping when Bob played his soli. Must be getting old. Really? I'm only 73 ;-)
At least some of us knew what to expect.
He's my all time favorite musician even though I used to play guitar and drums.

Saw this band back then in Turin, Italy, with Jeff Andrews on bass (great), all the guys played their guts off and the late Bob was a soul shaker... such a heart, such a burning passion blowin' out that tube...I always loved Mike Brecker and always thought that Bob was the natural successor to the great master but... Anyway...that was an unforgettable evening.

Bob is da dude. So much warmth, colour and subtlety in his playing. Not just another shredder. And if he wants to let the horses run wild he does it in style and with grace. Definitely up there with the jazz gods. I keep coming back to his playing time and again.

Sadly because the Mike Stern guitar is based on a vintage Tele it comes with same issues. To adjust the truss rod means the neck has to be taken off. The radius is 7.25 and so chokes on hard bending of the top E even when set to 4/64th height. I still like the guitar and have it set where I like it. Have had to shim the neck though and change the bridge to a Wilkinson and the string heights all set with a radius gauge. I have learned so much more about guitars since having it.

Maybe you should consider setting it up like Mike does??. He uses light strings (9’s I think he said) and has high action and deliberately ‘bows’ the neck, with a bend in it. His guitar feels weird but it makes sense and you get use to it within a short period of time.
