      I mean the title is very 2020.
      At least it is for me. I started consistently listening to Behind the Bastards and Worst Year Ever about three months before the pandemic, and a "joke" Robert Evans would make consistently, is to tell the listener to buy bolt cutters and angle grinders and equipment like that to break into things.
      So when I first saw the title "Fetch the Bolt Cutters", that's where my brain immediately went to that.

    • @kevinwillems8720
      @kevinwillems8720 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the general themes still connect, even though when Robert told people to buy Bolt Cutters, it was usually about breaking into things, instead of out of them.

    Her MTV speech was actually not (just) an overwhelmed teen's rant, it was taken out of context. Her speech was about how showbusiness is bullsh*t and how celebrity culture shouldn't be followed as an example - which she eventually got to live by.
    Fiona is an interesting artist for me, not only because of her music and persona but also the place she holds within the music sphere - with Kate Bush and Björk they are the original and ever so unique art/alternative/baroque pop artists, who earned their status for a reason, finding a perfect balance between commerciality and personality, embracing exciting, unique ideas and their own weirdness.
    As for the ranking of her albums, I personally find Extraordinary Machine to hold a similar place in Fiona's discography like Biophilia does in Björk's. When I first heard it, I was like "this is really good, why do people rank it so low?" It's the context, the comparison to what their other records achieved in sound and vibe that makes them not to hold up to other, greater ones within the discographies.

    When The Pawn.. and The Idler Wheel were absolutely phenomenal albums to be introduced into Fiona's discography. I'm always a sucker for the singer/songwriter genre and her vocal performance throughout her career should not go understated. Fetch The Bolt Cutters, The Idler Wheel, When The Pawn are my ultimate Fiona trio of albums. You can argue each is a masterpiece in its own way. And they’re each fairly different from each other while still maintaining the Fiona Apple-like connective tissue. Though I do really like Extraordinary Machine, and I appreciate Tidal for the more basal and commercial jazz-pop album it is. I hope ‘Fetch’ doesn’t end up being her last album. But if it is, she has a pretty strong and distinct discography and ended with possibly her best work.

  • @liteflightify
    @liteflightify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +94

    Extraordinary Machine is honestly borderline underrated to me. Both versions of the album could use a little bit of the other in them. Though I do think the official version is a bit better. That album is more of a collection of really good songs (some of her best songs) rather than the daring, purposeful, idiosyncratic, complete visions her trio of great albums offered (‘Fetch’, The Idler Wheel, When The Pawn). So, it does understandably end up feeling like a lesser work compared to them. Still a strong album though and was easily one of the few best releases in 2005.

      But this video repeats the idea that Fiona had no choice in re-recording EA. Didn’t she come out later and say the whole thing was her idea in the first place?

    • @liteflightify
      @liteflightify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Hegder Yes, she said that she wasn’t happy with the original sessions. So, she asked Sony for more money to re-record. That’s when they told her that they’d only do it if she gave them each song to review every time she finished a track. She decided not to do that and allowed the album to be shelved. Once the “Free Fiona” stuff happened the label felt pressure and allowed her to re-record the album without any provisions. So, yeah, there’s a couple moments of misinformation in the video.

    Some more context behind Extraordinary Machine’s delayed release. Fiona has stated in interviews that she wrote all the lyrics for the songs on the album on her own time, but when she went into the studio she wasn’t 100% sure what she wanted them to sound like. This is because for her first 2 albums Fiona wrote the songs long before she recorded them, so by the time she got inside the studio she knew exactly what she wanted. For the 3rd album she had not had enough time to “live” with the songs to know what she wanted them to sound like. The initial Jon Brion-produced tracks were demos that Fiona wasn’t satisfied with. Fiona wanted the label to give her money to rerecord the songs, but the label initially refused. There was overall miscommunication between Fiona and her label which led her to give up on the project altogether. Then the Free Fiona movement because fans assumed the label had shelved the album, even though the truth is Fiona herself gave up on it. However, the movement inspired Fiona and the label gave her the money to rerecord the album, because that’s what SHE wanted. By the time got to the studio with Mike Elizondo she had a more clear idea of how she wanted the songs to sound like. The released version of the album is the one Fiona wanted to release, not the version Sony wanted her to release (Sony really didn’t have a preference between the Jon Brian version and the Mike Elizondo version)

    The thing that drew me to FIona's music is her exceptional gift of poetic lyricism combined with astonishing vulnerability and honesty. Many might see that vulnerability as off-putting and a weakness, but I see it as Fiona's biggest strength as an artist. Fiona's ability to share her inner turmoil - in a relatable, powerful way - that still feels unique to her, is what makes her outstanding. Also, the fact that she's an amazing musician with a commanding voice is just another bonus.

    I doubt that there's enough fans in your audience to get it to the top pick, but I'm hoping They Might Be Giants gets a DDD soon. They've got the longevity, the influence, the BIG discography (20+ releases including the children's albums and b-sides), and most importantly, they're weird as hell, which always makes for a fun Dive.

    It's always feels so awkward when I think about how I got into Fiona Apple back in the mid 2000s discovering her music when I was around 16 and got obsessed with her music but yet whenever I brought her up with my classmates, they never heard of her... Unsurprisingly as a teenager going through the emotions, "Tidal" was so freaking relatable and I would listen to that album so much before I eventually grew to appreciate and fall in love with "When The Pawn" when I got a little older. I could dote for a long time but to make it short, she's one of the best musicians of all time in my opinion

    I was first introduced to Fiona Apple when I randomly found the track "Left Alone" which is probably the song that sounds the least like her, but i was immediately hooked anyways. To this day I absolutely adore that song and Fiona is hands down one of my favourite artists.

    my introduction to her music was fetch the bolt cutters when it came out when i was 16, the perfect age to be introcuced to fiona apple. it blew my mind, id never heard anything quite like it, but i didnt look into the rest of her discog until this year. her music and lyricism is on that level where you shudder to think about the depths of the soul you have to reach into to pull out that kind of art.

Even though her discography isn’t big, it’s impressive and so much more so than many artists out there today. She is so in touch with the human condition and human emotions. I love you Fiona Apple. This answers a question about DDD I only thought of this week, being: I wonder if Mike the Snare would cover artists with smaller discographies, such as Iggy Pop & The Stooges, The Police, or Portishead.

    • @lasseheller9863

      It is kind of interesting seeing the past few DDDs focus on smaller discographies. They’re among the shortest ones he’s done since changing up the format, which I think makes the individual albums pop a bit more. Also all three of those artists would make for great DDDs!

    extraordinary machine might be considered as fiona’s weakest album but it was my first introduction to her music- and thus i have a superrrr huge soft spot for it. the title track’s surprisingly upbeat message (especially considering fiona’s usual body of work) and parting gift’s beautiful imagery and the performance of rage and jealousy on window still makes this album a favourite of mine 💖
    (i think it’s significantly better than tidal *shot*)

    I fell in love with Fiona as a teen around 2009 because there was something in her voice that instantly hooked me and held this power over me. I was heartbroken when she canceled her tour to South America in 2012 - it was supposed to be my first travel to São Paulo and I was so excited to see her live (I was 18 and I had to work hard to convince my parents to let me go lol). But I was more than paid back in 2017 when, out of pure chance, I happened to flee hurricane Irma all the way from Miami to LA the day before she played at Ohana Fest. I was able to see her in an incredibly intimate show on such a beautiful site after going through a terrifying experience. In a way it was a culmination of many things in my life. I knew she was a mesmerizing performer and interpreter, but I discovered her to be a captivating and fun human being as well.
    As I got more proficient in English I was able to revisit and unveil the layers of the poetry in her lyrics, and as I get older I sense that I understand her better and my favorite albums shift all the time. I currently tend to favor The Idler Wheel more. Regardless though one song that always stood high in my rankings is Left Alone: I love how she punches the lyrics and goes absolute bonkers in the piano, only to pause and alongate the sounds in an excruciating way.
    Man, great work on the videos on this channel anyways, it's so good to see quality work like this! Best wishes from Brazil 💚💛

    I remember seeing "Criminal" on some "most controversial videos" countdown late night when I was like 12 years old. Being a kid, I didn't understand why people made a big deal about the content... it totally didn't occur to me she was like 17 when they filmed it. Now that I am over 30,, it comes off as a very weird way to supposedly satire the modeling industry. Either way, the song and video stuck into my mind for a number of years after that. Later on, I found copies of Tidal and Extraordinary Machine at a thrift store. I became obsessed with both albums, repeating them nonstop. They eventually made it on to an iPod classic that was made up of all of my CDs painstakingly ripped onto a laptop that didn't hold enough storage for everything. I had to use an external hard drive to sync everything to the iPod. I finally got around to streaming When the Pawn and was completely blown away that I had missed such a phenomenal album. I found the CD at a the same thrift store and added it to the collection well after I had slowed down on buying CDs and made the switch to Spotify. I had already owned a copy of Idler Wheel at that point. I must have listened to "Hot Knife" on constant repeat the summer it came out. By the time Fetch the Bolt Cutters was released, I had gotten into vinyl heavily sooo I got the Barnes and Noble bronze colored pressing. Fiona has followed me from format to format over the past like 15 years or so. She's one of favorite artists. I return to her time and time again as she taps into an emotional nerve with me. Her music is beautiful on so many levels. I can always return to any of her albums and feel something authentic.

    Love Fiona Apple. She's one of the few artists I listen to where I generally won't skip any tracks (except "Sullen Girl" just with the subject of that song it's a hard one to listen to). And for new listeners since her discography is pretty small it's easy to get into her music.
    One song I love of hers that's not on her studio albums is Dull Tool. It was written for the movie This Is 40. In 2018 it was my most listened to song. Unfortunately, it's not available on streaming anymore (at the least the ones I have here in Canada). But it's a great song.
