My second though, after drooling over the tightness of the grain, was about measuring the arc of the grain to get an idea of the size of the tree at the spot where the board came from. I mean, I know I'm odd, but is that thought odd?
Don’t know if the problem is on my side but the audio of the music from the build sequences is heavily distorted. Had to turn down the volume significantly.
I think it was an unfortunate effect done by whoever made the music, because the drum beat part of the track was fine. Some people just like to add effects to their instrument tracks and make it worse. The other audio when she was talking was just a problem with her phone.
Aussie here: in Australia we have to have pool fences by law. With little kids I strongly urge you to consider getting a pool fence. It only takes seconds for kids to drown in a pool. It means you have peace of mind and the kids can play in the back yard without supervision as long as they cant climb the fence or open the gate. Also love the shelf, love you, your content. 😊
@laurakampf also came here to say that too. It's the same in France and South Africa, pool fences are mandatory by law. They have saved so many children's lives, it only takes a few minutes for accidents to happen with little ones. please do look into it 🙏🏻
Pool fences are mandatory in Québec, Canada too and you can't have anything close to the pool/fence that would give it access, like the filter must be at least 4 feet from the fence or the wall of the above ground pool. And the fence must have a door that closes automatically, and be at least 1,2m high and not let anything bigger then a 10cm ball through.
The last 3 minutes of the video! it was SO wholesome. The excitement and joy and pride when you finish a project , no matter how big or small, there is nothing else like it. LOVED it. Thank you for sharing this.
You are amazing! The simple little project wasn't simple! Deconstruction of the diving board, planning, cutting, constructing, waxing, heat shield, turned into a beautiful shelf. Don't underestimate your skills and vision. Hugs from 🇨🇦
This was a lovely project, and I'm very happy to hear that the fires didn't quite reach your home! One thing though, I hope you're not planning to store oil on that shelf (like the bottles make it look like you are) - the heating/cooling cycles from the stove being used will make the oil go stale/rancid far, far more quickly than it stored away from the heat.
A good happy project is when I carry it from room to room for a few days (I make small leather goods). Love your passion and thank you for inspiring me with it!
Discovered your channel last week-end and spent my evenings this past week watching so many of your videos. Your creations are awesome ! Makes me want to building stuff to. So inspiring !
To achieve something that makes your heart & soul sing, in the aftermath of adversity, is such a blessing & wonderful to witness. Thank you Laura for sharing these special moments with us. Your pure joy #priceless 🎉 ❤ ❤ ❤
If there're any chunks left I'd definitely be making an end-grain chopping board for the kitchen... that close grain is STUNNING! Love what you've done with the shelf - definition of elegant simplicity and your new pool guy is decidedly gorgeous ;) lol
Ha-ha, I read this before watching video, "pool guy" turned out to be a little different than what I was imagining. (When I read this I thought "I guess you enjoyed the pool guy but I doubt that Laura really cares!" 😄
Laura, I am so glad to see this video and know that you are ok. I was really worried about you with the fires. I used to live in LA and just guessing based on looks of your new home & surrounding areas I was afraid you might be in an affected area. It must have been super scary - that video of the fire being nearby is intense. So thankful you, your family, and your home were spared from this disaster. Edit: Wrote above before even watching the video, but the shelf is *perfection.* I remember the video where you were like "Hi, I'm back, I got married, I'm in LA, and all these house videos (from Lise Lotte) are not exactly my jam, I want to make little sculptural pieces. You were so excited and happy. I remember thinking "yes, this is why I watch Laura Kampf videos - her projects are good, she has excellent ideas and a lot of creativity, but the real reason to follow her is the joy, enthusiasm, playfulness, fun, and pride she exudes when working on her "signature" type projects. (When I first happened upon your channel you were making things like the mini toolbox/"workshop," and leather covered/hinged seat for the tiny house.) Your joy is contagious. Thank you, and may you all continue to be safe and well!
I will not have my oils and spices directly above the furnace for exactly the same reason! Oils (and pepper and salt) are on a shelf about 120cm away (but still within easy reach). Spices and herbs deteriorate in light, I have a full-height cupboard with all my spices and small oil and vineagar bottles with a large sliding door which is also a chalkboard. That cupboard is actually inset in the rear of the coat cubby which was way deeper than it needed to be, so I borrowed 10 cm from there. Best improvement I made to my house.
kids + pool = towels, floatie toys, etc. Perhaps a minimally-sided (slats on the side, with open front and rear) low bench storage box with a matching wood plank above with dowel hooks. Installed on exterior wall by pool door entrance. Good job Laura on being a Stellar Human Being 🏆
I was thinking Zima Blue - but that is a very obscure scifi reference, haha. The name features in a novella written by Alastair Reynolds. However, it has been remade into a Love, Death & Robots episode as well! Go check it out!
Such nice tight slow growth wood! The difference between that wood and faster growing wood is amazing. Building ANYTHING that will show off the beauty of that tight grain wood will be inspiring. Way to go exploring the inner structure of the diving board! You just never know what you might find.
Laura I’ve watched you all the way back to when you were reviewing records. By the time you had the wood planed I was just taken back to that silent pre-voiceover era. So well done! Thanks for all the hard work ❤
That old growth wood is always great to find and reuse. It's always pretty brittle though, and it splits easily (seen as your first screw went in). I've come to finish driving screws in by hand, so it just comes to snug, instead of actually tight, which is fine, especially when using glue in your joints
I cannot imagine the stress of the fires. My daughter and grandkids live in Northern California. Glad you and your family are doing okay. I understand doing something to relieve your anxiety, I am the same way
the grain of the wood is absolutely stunning! I am not great with ideas for such stuff, but for the amazing grain pattern, I think it would look great even as a simple box with hinged lid, no extra features or decorations, just the pretty structure of the wood on display. Glad you are safe. Scritches for Smudo's wiggly ear.
I'm so happy you and your family are ok, I was in LA a few years ago and I'm shocked, the fire got to one or two blocks from where my wife and I stayed. Never every had I imagined such a thing would be possible, but I beliefe in the community to build LA better than it was ever before.
Oh, I understand fully your satisfaction and excitement about that shelf that you built. I do what you do, too, taking a photograph the end product and sneak peek at the photo every once in a while during the day😁😁😁
Firstly so glad you guys are all safe! I def thought of shelves because it would let the wood shine. Then I thought of making a memory box. If enough one for each of the kids and for you guys.
it's so satisfying taking something apart to see what's inside, and getting some amazing wood like that to build back into the house is just *chef's kiss* (also nemo or das bot are both great pool bot names)
What a great shelf. So practical and beautiful. I'm not sure what I would build, but that grain was awesome, so it would need to showcase the grain.. I thought those diving boards were fiberglass-coated metal. That was so neat to discover what really was inside. Thanks, Laura.
What a great idea. If I was looking to build useful items for my home I would want a bench seat by my front door where I can take my shoes off and put them back on before I walk out. It would have to be something clever looking and have a great story. However, that's just me. Loved this video Laura.💚
The shelving looks great. When I saw the boards come out, I had the immediate thought of using the boards and the skin to make some sort of bench(s) or table(s) for a patio area next to the pool.
Juxtaposed to another channel I watch, and like, but I watched his today, shaking my head today at how much he threw away. Finding that old growth Doug Fir in that diving board was cool as hell. Nice, Laura!
Its so grate to give a new life to trash. And that grain!! I just uploaded a video 9f me making a coffee stove out of an old fire extinguisher i picked from the streets, not really going to use it for the summer but its lovely to see it in the workshop
Laura, to avoid clipped audio as on this video, check out the "normalize peak level" feature on whatever editing software you're using. It'll bring all the sound across a whole piece right up to just under the clipping level. It's kind of the best of both worlds; you video will sound as loud as it can, but it won't clip.
With how beautiful that would is and how tight the lines are the fist thing that came to mind was making a portrait piece of art out of thin cut pieces so that it almost looks like a damascus piece of steel in a crazy sandwiched pattern, but from wood. All together it’d speak to my love for wood work and metal work together. Glad you and the family are safe! ❤️🇿🇦

the quality of the lumber that diving boards are made from is hard to beat. Clear old growth fir or spruce you wont find anything like that at a home store. great for furniture and cabinetry boxes things that show off the wood. I have an old laminated all wood diving board salvaged from a job waiting for the right project myself it is an inspiration just looking at it .
Glad you are ok. We also live in the same area. Not as near to the fires as you, but friends were impacted :( Will you be able to do anything with the wood from the trees you cut down? (Great shelf!) Love the robot!
Laura, the “diving-board” shelve looks great, plus, consider using your pool water to hose down your house in case the fire spreads to your neighborhood.
I imagine I would have made an easel from the wood, maybe a small one for tables. The grain feels very inspiring, so I feel like it's perfect for something creative (so is cooking!)
Lovely, lovely work. I was thinking “oh make a little bench for poolside in the diving board spot” but probably not enough wood. A very skinny, tiny bench…
Looks great! I would have built a sconce in the Green and Green/Hall brothers style, but that's just what I really enjoy building. Such beautiful tight grain wood. I'm so glad you celebrated it.
LOOK AT THIS GRAAAAIIIIIIN!!!
First thought, when I saw it: This must be pretty old. Then I read the title. 😉

Adding glass or perspex sliding doors to the shelf would keep the bottles clean from grease.
