How To Install An Outlet and Light Switch Combo | Adding a Receptacle To Any Room

  • In this video I show how I go about adding a receptacle to any room. No need to cut any holes, add boxes, or run additional wiring. I use a 15-amp tamper resistant residential/commercial duplex switch outlet combo to do this. It is by far the quickest and easiest way to add a receptacle in a room that either doesn't have one or all of the current receptacles are not accessible.

    What do you think? Is this easier than cutting a hole in the wall, running wire, and installing a new receptacle?

    • @billybrewer2061

      What is going to be plugged into the recepitical? Is to much for the breaker to handle and is it going to keep tripping the breaker. Do you figure out how many watts are being pulled off that line of recepticles before adding another one into that circuit?

      How do you test the neutral wire ? I didn't see you do this, but I wanted to see if mine wasn't going to have any issues, especially because I have seen mice damage in other wires at my girlfriend's house. Her house is tore up. Somebody had done some shady work, and the mice left bare wires in many places. Thank you.

    Lifesaver!! I am just a dumb old girl and thought this would be straight forward, but when I wired it up (connecting BOTH white neutrals to the combo outlet...duh...) only the socket worked. I moved the wires around a bit, and still no luck on the light switch. Then I found your video. I made the pigtail out of the excess wire that was in the wall, and got everything attached and working perfectly according to your instructions. THANK YOU!!!

      I'd be a little careful of EHR's electrical advice. There's a been several instances where it was not done to code. Although it's targeted at electricians and not so much homeowners, check out "Electrician U". With much difficulty and excessive effort I pretty much just performed this same task but with almost perfect results. Wish I had seen this video sooner! Yes I did search for this exact situation but unfortunately did not find it until now. Unfortunately my results are still unsatisfactory in that the outlet is not hot unless the light switch is “on.” There are a couple of differences in my circumstance: there are two lights operated by the switch and there is also another outlet wired to the same circuit as the switch. Although a different brand, the new switch/receptacle is functionally identical to the one in this video and I have not removed the bridge between the hot screw contacts.

    This video was a big help for me. 2 Switches were in the electrical box one for a timer for outside Porch Light and one Foyer Light Switch inside. The one with a timer was fed by a Red wire used to the neutral side of the other switch and and another Red wire coming from the outside light connected to the Load Side of the 2nd switch was introduced in the same box going over to a outside porch switch and that red wire connected to the load side of the switch that had 2 terminals. Worked perfectly, I did this to have a power source for a outside Camera showing who comes to my front door. Have been using a Ring Doorbell but was not happy with their recent increase they were about to charge me for a year of service. 2 increases in the last 2 years. If they were to increase me again for the same amount in 2025 I will be paying double in 3 years as when I started. I rather just have a Micro SD Card. It is all that is needed as far as I am concerned. I own the Ring Doorbell so it will still ring when someone comes to the door and presses the doorbell and show who is there if I am home but won't record anything the reason for the other Camera and the source I needed for power nearby. This Camera will also let me know when someone comes to my door along with other Camera's in my system. By the way I am a new Subscriber.

    The diagram that came with the combo wasn't helpful, so I wasn't sure that I had figured out how to add the receptacle part to the switch part. Thanks to your clear demonstration I now know what to do and don't need to worry about creating a hazard. Thanks so much! You probably saved me a couple hundred dollars.

    I'm glad you made a clear distinction between "back stab" and "back wire". This appears to be a continuing disagreement within the trade.
    You're breaker was 15 amp; maybe a word or caution to use wires & devices that are compatible to the breaker ampacity?

  • @lockboxfan

    Incredibly informative. I felt so confident going into exchanging an old switch for a combo--but there were only two wires in the box. I assume one line and one neutral? No ground, and when I installed w/o the ground (metal box), the outlet had not power going to it even though the switch worked.

    When turning off the breaker for the switch you're working with, if it proves to be a 20 amp circuit, the pigtail should be made with 12 gauge wire, not the 14 gauge that most electrical outlets and switches are wired to 15 amp circuits with. 12 gauge wire is designed to carry a bigger load, but a 15 amp switch can be connected to it. It is all of the wiring, including the pigtail, that must be the exact same gauge.

    Highly recommend putting something like a Wago on the end of each of the hot wires before testing line or load. You can still test by placing the meter lead into one the push connectors and it's a much safer method than having hot bare copper.

    Would like to mention, that before using a volt meter to check if a circuit is live or not, you should always check the meter with a known voltage source to verify your meter actually is working correctly. Safety first always.

    Most lighting electrical wire is 14 gauge, so it only able to load 1800 Watts, tap to this wire for an outlet and someone plug in a 2400 Watts heater it will strip the breaker or light up the whole house with fire ...

    • @HowToHomeDIY
      @HowToHomeDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most electrical now in the US the lighting and receptacles are not separated unless it is a circuit for GFCIs or something that requires a dedicated circuit. They are mostly done by room. Of course you need to do some due diligence to know what you are going to use a receptacle for. This would be the case in any install. Your example of a 2400 watt heater would even be maximizing a 20 amp 12 gauge dedicated circuit.

    You just inspired me to put a new outlet on my garage light switch because just yesterday, I had to put an extension cord laying across the door entrance to get power to the corner of my garage where the outlet is behind a cabinet. I’d much rather not have to worry about tripping over the cord (or even a piece of carpet covering the cord) at the bottom of the steps every time I go in and out of the garage whenever I’m using my battery charger.

    Excellent as always. 😊 Thank you!
    Question -- I have older home... want add this combo switch.
    Box has only (black) HOT and (white) NEUTRAL. I added (green) GROUND.
    Keeping tab intact to allow switched light and constant feed to outlet...
    How do I handle the one hot and one neutral?

    • @dockjm
      @dockjm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @sashaghovanlou8175 ... hi.
      As per a couple of electrician friends, I'd best handle it by dedicating a true neutral. I ended up just cutting in an additional two gang outlet (gfci) in that bathroom. Better option anyway. :)

    So....first off... awesome video and presentation. Thank you SO much. Hopefully just a quick question....my box does not have line and load wires. Only one wire goes into the box. I'm also installing two downstream plugs. It's in my garage. The diagram that came with the switch/plug indicated just what you showed. However, the switch is now controlling all of the plugs. Everything works fine when the switch is on, but not when it is off. Can this part be used without the second black wire? Thanks.

  • @kaznats1
    @kaznats1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What part of without any wiring am I not getting? This is just a switch activated outlet that depends upon existing power.

    • @HowToHomeDIY
      @HowToHomeDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't say without any wiring it says without running any wiring because the wiring is already there. It is not switch activated unless you want it to be and break the bar connecting the hot terminals. I go over all of this in the video.

  • @volkmann5
    @volkmann5 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Quick and probably dumb question; Couldn't you simply back wire both neutral (white) wires to the receptacle instead of using a pigtail? The silver screw appears to have two slots for back wiring, and it seems like it would be less crowded with wires inside the box. Thanks.

    This was great. What if your single pole switch was a 3-way switch, as it's wired to another switch that controls the light? Still same concept?

    Also, you mentioned briefly about a "smart device" . I do not want a smart device. What do i disconnect to make it not smart?

    Very straight forward explanation I'm going to install one of those much-needed receptacles. My question is why is it you never wrap the outlets with electrical tape before you screw it back into the box?

    • @HowToHomeDIY
      @HowToHomeDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just personally find it unnecessary and it can make a sticky mess later. As long as everything is installed correctly there should not be any issues. But some folks think it helps and to my knowledge it is perfectly legal to do so. I appreciate the feedback!

    Please provide couple of scenarios where I'd want to install something like this?
    I can only see permanent things that fit in socket & don't interfere with the switch & doesn't have cords hanging down wall...
    Because if cords are hanging down the wall or going up the wall, that's aesthetically unappealing ( ugly ), it could be hazardous having cord / wires hanging from that high on wall near switch I may have to feel in dark to turn on & off...
    So please provide some examples where this switch / socket combo would be useful...
    Otherwise great video & detailed explanations on how to install & what each wire does & safety precautions...
    Thanks for sharing video...

      useful for countertop appliances that you want to leave plugged in but also turn off. For example a toaster. Also useful for use with Roof Heat Cable to turn on and off if wired as a switched receptacle. These are also great to use for a furnace shutoff on the switch and a condensate pump for the receptacle.

      In my garage, I expanded a single gang into a double gang and made one of the receptacles the switch type shown here. So, now I can leave several things plugged in such as a charger and my shop light. Since it’s a garage, I really don’t care about esthetics. I’ve also considered adding one of these to the light switch as I enter the attic so I can plug in my vacuum for cleaning the furnace that’s up there.
