    What a great bunch of awesome spinners. To them I wish that they all would stay in the scene for many years and keep on pushing the boundaries of poi. Each in her/his own way.

    10 poi spinners? In this Video only three of ten are playing Poi. And only one of them is actually Poi Spinning. How does it come that people stopped playing and realizing what poi spinning is?

      Spinning poi means different things to different people. Ive gotten to meet 7 of the 11 of them and theyre all amazingly talented in their own rights.
      Im curious what your definition of spinning poi is?

      First of all, Poi is a Flowart and as such it has to contain dance and object manipulation. 7 of the artists fail because of not dancing.
      Then there is a difference in Poi Juggling and Poi Spinning. Poi Spinning has to have a constant linking beetween one Poi handle and one hand (makes it 2 Poi 2 Hands). So no throwing and stuff, which is as soon as you do it Poi Juggling. Actually Poi Juggling is much broader then Poi Spinning because in Poi Spinning you have an exact definition while Poi Juggling is somehow everything that is not Poi Spinning. I am fully engaged into Poi Spinning but I accept Poi Juggling like Ty does it. Since it can be also art but just not mine. Its kinda like Ballett and Modern Dancing. However I could also write about art as itself and how allmost every poi artist rapes it because they are just doing it for positive Emotions and not l'art pour l'art. But thats a different topic.

      Poi spinning is diverse. It is an art that as grown and mutated greatly over the years. Things we take for granted now like flowers and hybrids weren't a part of the original poi style practiced by the Maori--they've been imported from arts like club swinging and glowstringing. One of the strengths of this artform is its ability to mutate and take inspiration from other arts. The people who made the list this year absolutely reflect that diversity with styles that incorporate contact juggling, toss juggling, ballet, hip hop dance, gloving, meteor, and many others. Personally I'm pretty amazed by the diversity of this artform rather than fixated on how to define what it isn't.

      DJDDM I didnt realize that poi had to follow special rules to be considered poi?

    • @djddm8760
      @djddm8760 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not everything done with Poi(the tools) is Poi(the art). It is not safe to say, that Poi comes from Maori only because of the name.Cause there are thousands of other possiblities. Actually there are some stuff from the european Middle Ages that can be interpreted as Poi aswell. The problem is, that the diversity you mention is just created artificial and is not coming from the art itself. Also pretty much all of the artists are doing it for positive Emotions, so they cant be taken serious. However, a good art cant be changed that much as it is done with Poi. Just look at Ballett and how it is still mostly the same even so people are doing stuff like modern dance. The people in the list only reflect that they are unable to just focus on one art, so they are changing there arts more often then theire underwear and just do stuff they like.
      No matter if you agree or not with the above you have to see that people are doing different arts with thingsonstrings so we need names. However the older form always has the right to get the name while the new ones have to search names for them alone. But since Poi was already defined as a having dance and object manipulation in it. Everything new that has no dance in it needs his own name. Thats why 7 out of 10 people cant be called Poi artists. There are more thingsonstrings artists then Poi artists. Its like saying that someone who does Hip-Hop Dance is a Ballett artists, only because they both use the same tools. I am ok with this people doing something that is not Poi. But I am not ok with people raping the name of Poi for theire thingsonstrings activities.
      That said we have first of all made clear that we need different names for different thingsonstrings activities. However you may ask why is this important. Its because every artform is so hard to be art instead of a tool for something else, you have to focus on what you are doing. Thats why you need names and definitions.
      What gives me tears is to see that my artform is dying even so people pretend it isnt and it is dying for something as ugly as thingsonstrings juggling object manipulation. I am honestly asking myself why people like Chris Kelly actually do such things. I think it is to easy to just say he wants to show off his body skills. But what else is he doing with this billions of poi juggling mini clips where he just trohws them randomly without any beauty in the poi. Every beauty there lies in his ability to do it. And this is not ok. The eye that is seeing itself is ill, and every artist is a slave of his art. So as soon as he wants to distinguish himself he stops making art.
      TL;DR: Pls stop raping my art and its name. Thank you.

    Been out of practice and touch with whats going on in the scene for a couple of years now, and always hovered inbetween dancing and tech myself, never had the stomach for the deeeep tech stuff though. Having said that: Where did all the jugging and 2poi1hand come from all of a sudden? ;)
    Good freakin jobs all around tho!
