I was hoping you would do my request today, when James turns 60. 🤟 The whole album is actually brilliant, you should check out more from it. Glad you liked this performance.
I agree the whole album is amazing and again.... something that'd never been done before in metal or, as far as I know, orchestral music! Happiest of Berfdays James Hetfield! 🤘🏼💙🤘🏼
Yeah, this was great. Respect to James for still being able to preform the way he does at still going strong. Thank you so much for all your love and support on Patreon!
This was a live album (S&M) that Metallica recorded with the San Francisco Symphony back in 1999 and this was one of 2 songs written exclusively with the symphony. They made another live album 20 years later in 2019 with the symphony: S&M2
Metallica had the idea playing with an orchestra back in 1991 when the "Black" album was released and already collaborated with Michael Kamen (the conductor of the orchestra). Sadly Kamen passed away in 2003. Would have loved to see him conducting S&M 2. He was a damn genius.
When this came out It completely blew my mind and opened it up to the possibilities of music when it is not constrained by genre. Good music is good music. I have been a fan of symphonic metal ever since. This recording is about 23 years old and still holds up today. You have to be impressed by Michael Kamen who wrote and directed all the symphonic music for this concert/album too. You mentioned Master of Puppets and yes they absolutely did Master of Puppets with the orchestra. You absolutely should check out this entire concert.
This was back in 1999 gentlemen They brought the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and did an entire show with them in Berkeley California, was also a DVD too. In 2019 they did it again S&M2 Same orchestra with a different conductor this time, but once again made into a DVD as well. Truly phenomenal performances, you both should do a deep dive into these shows, they are MAGICAL 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻 The album is called S&M and S&M2. They were both released, but you want mind blowing listen to Master of Puppets from S&M from this same show… TRUST ME
I remember hearing this song on the radio back in '99 and I immediately loved it and still to this day it's one of my favorite songs of all time. I watched the DVD in 2000 and was blown away. Such an epic show.
Kill em All Ride The Lightning Master of Puppets ..And Justice For All Black Album Load Reload Saint Anger Death Magnetic Hard Wired 72 Seasons Then u have the side stuff in between those albums like the garage days and symphony stuff... these guys are LEGENDS... FAN4LIFE 🤘🏽😎
There's also Beyond Magnetic, 4 amazing songs from the Death Magnetic recording sessions that they released as an Ep to satisfy fans till they eventually released Hardwired. I'd rather pretend like the abomination that is Lulu (Metallica's collaboration with Lou Reed) was never recorded lmao, what an embarrassment that was 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Guys, this is 23 years old. This came out in 2000. The album is S&M. There is also the live video of the whole album. They are live with the San Francisco symphony Orchestra.
So, Michael Kamen (R.I.P), who was the conductor for the San Francisco Symphony did the orchestra part of Nothing Else Matters on the black album, which you can hear better in "the elevator version" of the song. He pitched the idea of doing a full concert with the orchestra to Metallica, who decided to take him up on the offer nearly a decade later. Thus S&M (symphony & Metallica) came into being
This remind me that I had this album at home. That was awesome performance. Symphony always add this specific kind of sound to music. Thank you for this reaction and thank you Gabrielle to bring this song to the channel.
This was the last album made with Jason Newstead, was an entire concert of classics with a full orchestra playing music written to accompany the songs by the late great Michael Kamen. No Leaf Clover and -Human were the two original songs first played for this event, written with Kamen.
Aw, thanks you guys for doing Metallica today, happy birthday Papa Hett... you truly changed the world, and personally made mine a much better life to live so thank you, showing us all how to do 60 right LOL💕🤘 Please react to Spit Out The Bone sometime...I never see anyone talking about it and imho it's SO good...killer bass and excellent video, I know you both will love the message, and there's at least one chunky YEAH in there for you Hollywood!
Great reaction!! It was my girlfriend (now wife) that picked this CD up (released November 1999 - so it's now 24 years old!) - we listened and we loved! The maestro that makes this project work is none other than Michael Kamen (RIP) - composer extraordinaire (whom we can thank for SO many great soundtracks), conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Believe it or not, they do some 'older' thrash tracks, and they work wonderfully!! Master Of Puppets, Battery, One, The Call Of The Ktulu, For Whom The Bell Tolls. Nothing from Kill 'Em All though. The offerings were heavy on the Metallica (Black), Load and Reload albums. HIGHLY recommend any of the ones listed above, Bleeding Me, Hero Of The Day, and Fuel. And you were very close - S&M stands for Symphony & Metallica!
There's very few songs that have the ability to give me goosebumps from head to toe with just the instrumental aspect....This is one of those songs! Not sure how I missed this 1, but I loved that! The S&M albums are my favorite!!
This is one of my absolute favorites. From S&M (Symphony and Metallica) 1. This song was written specifically for the concert. It, obviously, did not disappoint. I always wanted to hear a lot of their music played by a symphony, but them playing with the entire orchestra was incredible. Watch the entire concert, if you can.
Morning guys! Hell ya that was great! I had the privilege of seeing Metallica in the 3rd row center to stage once with a full orchestra!!! It was badass!! I really enjoyed this one! Great choice!🤓❤️🤘
Now that I look at the dates everyone listed it being 23-25 yrs ago it may be this same symphony?? I heard it was the San Francisco symphony and I seen them 23-25 yrs ago in San Jose Cali which is near San Fran.... Who knows? Either way it was friggin Kool!!!
When they paired this song with storyline video of when Gohan went super saiyan 2 and beat cell was epic back in the day lol.. this is on my Playlist before every physical activity to get into the right mindset! 🔥 🔥 thanks for doing this one yall
Happy to hear you guys react to something from S&M. Personally, I think you both should listen to/react to the first three tracks back-to-back-to-back from the album. It may blow your minds, as it both sets the tone *and* melts your face off. And it doesn't stop from there.
Happy birthday to the big dog mighty Hetfield, so blessed this man was born on the same planet as us mere mortals, his music and attitude has helped me through life, thank you James ❤🤘🤘🤘
This is from S&M in 1999. It was a collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. It was a two disk set with only 2 new songs. Highly recommend listening to the whole thing.
this show was first done in 1999. amazing this song was one of 2 songs written specifically for this show. They did this show again in 2019. the 2019 show has the best video and sound quality.
This would have been an absolutely amazing show to see. For the vocal effects live, there is a tech off stage managing the effects. You can see James has practiced when to stop to let the delays and reverb ride out. Brilliant show! This show alone shows the Metallica hater's claims that they suck are baseless.
The vocals for Clover were re-recorded in the studio. The melodyne (form of pitch correction) can be heard throughout the album, this can't be achieved live. Before you ask, no it is completely different to autotune, they've never used it. Personally, I think it sounds great as it isn't used heavily, plus James's vocals from about 96-2001 are my favourite. 9:15 Personally I think they're his best. I'm sure the same EQ effect was used live however as you said.
This album was released in 1999, him saying this was a new one was applicable in 1999 when it was recorded. Also S&M is Symphony and Metallica. You were close Smokey.
Pretty sure the bull logo is Lamborghini Their oldest song? Seek & Destroy? Four Horsemen? My mom actually went to Downey High School with James but don't know that he was writing music at the time so she couldn't help there. Also gotta get to Holier Than Thou, All Nightmare Long, and another masterpiece from MoP, Orion
24 years ago 1999 with sf symphony and Michael kaman. Whole live album with symphony called S&M. Song was actually written with Michael Kaman coordinating the symphonic parts. Minus human is another original of that album and deep cut that r few Metallica weekenders know
Funny thing about my metal journey, I remember listening to the S&M album in 2003 and thinking “man, imagine if there’s metal bands that incorporate symphonic elements?” And boy, was did I later find out that was the case.
S&M = Symphony and Metallica. This was about 25 years ago. As for full Symphony with Symphonic Metal, Epica did a full concert with a Symphony too. And you NEED to do more Epica
They've put out 2 live S&M performances between 1999 and 2020. This is from the first one. I especially like their symphonic version of the instrumental The Call of Ktulu (from the Ride The Lightning album). By the way, Kill Em All is their 1st album (originally called Metal Up Your Ass). I believe the first song they ever wrote was Hit The Lights.
Suggestion, the doors. The song LA woman. The album is also called LA woman. Super fun song and it was their last. Jim died 3 months later. 27 yrs old. It’s so upbeat and soulful. Doesn’t even sound like Jim but it is. It’s a metaphor for the city of LA.
The composer is a friend of James and called him one day to ask if they would like to do something together. S&M is the result. 😁 They wrote the song "No leaf clover" especially for this concert. Greetings from Prussia. 🤝🏻
thisi from their s&m album, they have a sequel album with a different orchestra if i recall that was released in 2019 and this song actually appears on both. the first s&m came out in 2000 EDIT: also came out as a DVD/blu-ray

An amazing live for sure! You might like to see Concerto for Group and Orchestra that Deep Purple(John Lord) perform in 1969 to get an idea about Rock group cooperate with orchestra as one part!
It's not technically live. Vocals and guitar solo were overdubbed as it was lined up as the single for the live album. That song was written especially for that concert, it was the first one they played it and it was not released on any album, definitely one of my favorites. If you want some new Metallica, ״too far gone” or “room of mirror”
The s&m albums/ shows are amazing. While this song was made just for this concert the rest is their songs played with an orchestra playing with them. I suggest master of puppets and for whom the bell tolls from this concert.
Kill em all 1983, ride the Lightning 1984, master of puppets 1986, and justice for all 1988, black album 1991 Metallica s&m ( Symphony of San francisco and Metallica ) 1999 just to name a few great one guys 🤟
Hope you guys watch Through The Never. Its a movie about a Metallica roadie needing to get a mcguffin to bring the band during a bad acid trip that plays out through a few songs in their concert
I was hoping you would do my request today, when James turns 60. 🤟
The whole album is actually brilliant, you should check out more from it. Glad you liked this performance.
Great pick, this song is a masterpiece that everyone should experience!

Y'all need to react to their latest song "Inamorata" one of their best work ever

They made another live album 20 years later in 2019 with the symphony: S&M2
I think the version of this song from the 2019 show is the better version. Both killer tho.
Actually the songs were already in the process of being completed and it was felt that the symphony would lend itself perfectly to its completion.
“Somewhat new” lolol
@@Largeinchargeit is not. This is the original. SM2 hetfield looks way different
this was 24 years ago!! Epic song
They're playing with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra....the album "Live S&M" came out in 1999...
Happy birthday James Hetfield! My true hero of the day also RIP to the late Michael Kamen
I see what you did there.
The entire first S&M album is amazing. Highly recommend watching the concert.
Hence I still possess the blue ray set! I haven't put my hand on the S&M2 blu-ray set
Metallica had the idea playing with an orchestra back in 1991 when the "Black" album was released and already collaborated with Michael Kamen (the conductor of the orchestra).
Sadly Kamen passed away in 2003. Would have loved to see him conducting S&M 2. He was a damn genius.
Michael was amazing. Having worked with Pink Floyd, Queen, Aerosmith (check MTV 10th anniversary performance of Dream On) and and so many others.
I love love love this version!!!
This IS from their S&M album with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1999.
Minus Human on the same album S&M is also damn good, Infact the entire albums amazing to be honest.
I love Memory Remains S+M the crowd interacting with them on that is so good to hear.

Done on Hetfield's 60th birthday. The S&M this came off is more like 25 years old. It only was 'new' at the time of recording.

A rarity so im so happy they played it in Gothenbourg, Sweden some month ago!
one of my favorite songs by metallica just because of the work that got put into it
That song was created and written with the symphony for that concert in 1999. That's the reason at the end said that was brand new

They did an entire album in 99 called S&M with the San Francisco symphony orchestra.
Worth checking out
There is only one way to listen to this album, *LOUD!!!*
Happy Birthday James!!!
Seeing them tomorrow and Sunday. I hope I get to hear this song.
This live is epic! Rip to the conductor, mister Kamen 🙏
Otherworldly combination….Metallica and SF Symphony 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘…..unbeatable for eternity 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘

Metallica is GOAT`s from the 80`s, not the early 00`s.

It was in 1999
Thing song gave me goosebumps everytime i listen to it.
Killer Queensryche shirt! You need to check them out. Both their earlier stuff with vocalist Geoff Tate; and newer stuff with Todd La Torre on vocals.
This song is so epic sounding, especially when they come out of the bridge into that thunderous overture reprise. The song seems to be about the dangers of relying on luck for too long, because it can change in an instant.
The Outlaw Torn by Metallica the S&M version
Metallica worked with the San Francisco Symphony twice. This video was from the first time when Jason was their bassist. They have other songs. And they have an album with the Symphony.
The S&M concert, this one, the OG S&M concert, was 1999.
Bleeding Me or Outlaw Torn from this concert next!!!!!!
the vocals and other stuff were redubbed in the studio before the official VHS/DVD/album were released that how they did the vocal effect and why james sounds absolutely perfect. im not knocking it though, the redubbing really makes the album sound amazing yet still keeping that live feeling

i vote for mandatory metallica mondays
S&m was the year before st anger. It was a fantastic concert and album im always blown away how amazing it sounds being a live album.
About 4 years before
love this
From this album, the version of "The Thing That Should Not Be" is breathtaking.
That has always been mu favourite ❤
This song is from the S&M album
How hard can it be to type into the search bar: James Hetfield yeah
The 90’s were the pinnacle of music and society
From 1999 . It is awesome
That entire S&M album is dope
One of the best live albums ever- and it’s a double
If you guys loved this you should react to them doing Master of Puppets with the orchestra it's mind blowing
So yeah, you need to watch and listen to this whole concert. Yeah yeah.
The s&m albums/ shows are amazing. While this song was made just for this concert the rest is their songs played with an orchestra playing with them. I suggest master of puppets and for whom the bell tolls from this concert.

This whole concert was amazing, but if you only react to one other song off of this, "The Outlaw Torn" is epic.
This is over 20 years old fellas. Not long before Jason Newsted left the band.
S&M stands for symphony and Metallica
S&M is other game, you must react any song of this masterclass show.
Hope you guys watch Through The Never. Its a movie about a Metallica roadie needing to get a mcguffin to bring the band during a bad acid trip that plays out through a few songs in their concert
Please react to Hero of the Day from this same album. One of the most beautiful arrangements ever made!!! Best song on S&M album
