- Macbook Pro 2020 Base vs Macbook Air 2020 13 inch which one should I go for? is a question I have been asked a lot and in this video I am going to break down certain use cases and which Macbook 13" I think you should go for.
This is a good video for those who are not sure which Macbook Base 13inch to go for, this isn't a super technical video as I wanted this to be a video for everyone however there are some great videos from other creators that will go into this more scientifically I am sure! UPDATE: there is an issue with Final Cut Pro X and the 2020 Macbook Pro 10th Gen, I am in talks with Apple so I will say if you are looking for a MacBook Pro for Final Cut Pro, please avoid the £1800 model until they have fixed the issue, I will do an update once they have addressed this. I've seen just about all the "Air vs. Pro" videos and reviews out there, and this one just really impressed me! Awesome job! I've had the 256mb/i5/8GB version of the Air for a month now and I love it. For writing in pages, using Final Draft, web-browsing and email, it's a snappy little machine and I'm yet to hear the fan. Maybe I should have gone for the 16GB of RAM to future-proof it a little better, but otherwise it's perfect for these kinds of tasks. Great review.

@@gangigooga7710 well Thinkpads are upgradable and my x230 still serves me well after 7yrs with i5 3rd gen. I upgraded the storage with SSD and Ram from 4gb to 12gb and its so good and life is long. Now I'm bored and want to switch to Mac

Watched 3 times. I’m a college student and on a college budget as well 😂. Got torn between the 10th gen processor of the MBA and the base, 8th gen, 16gb RAM of the MBP.
Think I’m gonna get the MBP.

don't. wait. Ima gonna explain. i7 10th gen is so close even a little bit better than MBP's i5 8th gen but Macbook air has like an 80% faster ram and also a newer and faster GPU the only bad side is the thermal issue happening in like 4 k raw video editing or playing Minecraft but you can get a external cooler when doing things like that and it also depends where you are living too. In conclusion If I was you I would get the i7 16 gigs 256 storage MBA. Also they both have only 1 fan so the both have thermal issues then
@@part4963 Good point ! The MBP has one fan, but still, it is better in terms of thermal performance because it has a heat pipe between the fan and its processor. Also, external cooling could be useful, yes, but it take some space (especially if you want to do some heavier tasks on the go). I don't know the prices of those cooling systems but you'll have to review your budget !
Go for MBP with 16GB RAM. U don’t have to worry for 3/4 years.
The MacBook air and pro (base) do have one fan however the pro model has better cooling meaning that it can utilize the 8th gen processor better than the macbook air can utilize the 10th gen, this is proven in the numbers, however this doesn't matter if you aren't doing heavy tasks like coding, video editing, or high Res raw photo editing, so you will be better off with the air which will suit your needs better my friend, but if you do any of those things then the Pro is the better choice😊

Teacher here. We're all looking at doing online lessons with zoom starting next month and I'm thinking about getting a personal notebook computer to outclass the dated PCs my company expects me to use. I usually do simple photoshop work for handouts, as well as a lot of web browsing with google drive. We also do a lot of simple audio editing for listening tasks. My work PC tends to crash when doing any of these tasks with multiple tabs open on my browser, and since now we'll be adding 30+ video lessons a week to the task load, and the weather is starting to heat up, I'm thinking of going with the Pro might be the best option because of how it can handle running for a long time and keeping cool. It's older processor will probably still blow everything else I have out of the water anyway. Thanks for the video. It's very informative.

Returning the Air. It runs too hot from normal use and the fan gets too loud. I could understand if I’m pushing the MacBook to its limits, but I’m only web browsing. Shame really. Guess il get the Pro 13”.

I’ve always said: MBP for heavy users. Lots of video editing, Photoshopping on a more advance level, etc. MBA for the average user who doesn’t use those heavy programs and put them to the max

This really is the best comparison video on this topic until now, big channels like MKBHD haven’t covered this. I really wonder why you have so few subscribers , especially as you serve the demand quite quick.
I truly gained some more relevant information with this. However I haven’t decided yet which one to buy. A friend of mine owns the MBA 2017 and says the laptop‘s fans are quite loud while only doing work tasks on MS office. Is this something the 2020 Air does as well? How does it cope with multitasking many light tasks like having open 10+ tabs on Firefox while editing PDFs and writing in MS word etc? Would the pro be better for this as it would be quieter?

Hi! I currently have the MBA 2017 and I can attest to this. Honestly it’s kind of 50-50. If I have 10 tabs open, none of which are videos, there is a minimal fan sound. However, after a while (about 1 hour) the fans do get much more hotter and noticeable. I usually place it in front of the airconditioner and it cools it down. It’s also more likely to get hot and loud if I’m using it on my lap or bed, anything that isn’t a hard surface. I’m contemplating getting a MBA i5, 8GB ram and 256SSD or a base MBP. I’m a student but I also like editing photos and sometimes videos (when I travel, small vlogs, or for school projects). I don’t really like the touch bar, but eh. I’m looking for a Macbook that would last me for four years without the battery dying on me too much.
Andrea Tan thanks for this, this whole MBA thermal throttling thing was too much of a risk for me, I need a quiet notebook and can’t stand the fan noise. I went with the MBP baseline with 16GB Ram.

Techkhamun totally wish more TH-camrs would look at it from that perspective. Most consumers don’t understand all the technical tests and want to know “if I do these tasks will this computer work for me”.

Spot on and great recommendations, here's one thing not mentioned and I would like your point of view if possible. What are your thoughts about the health of the Gen 10 in the air long term, do you think being at such high temperatures so often will hurt it's longevity ?
MacBook Pros have always ran hotter than their PC laptop counterparts, my Macbook Pro from 2015 and 2012 used to run hot but they both work fine to this day so I wouldn't worry about it but of course these are new chips so anything could happen, but I am not worried that they won't last the 5/6 years I usually keep my laptop's for
I use MacBook Pro 13 for two weeks now and I have to say that I love it. 16 gigs of RAM was definitely worth it and make it a lot more future proof. Great retina screen, very good speakers and everything just works. No fan noise as well (at least doing usual stuff). In my country (Poland) this stuff is far more expensive than in US but I feel that is still worth it.

I got MBA with i5 and 16 GB RAM, it gets warm sometimes (when having classes online, making notes and listening to music at the same time/don’t judge me, I like background music) but honestly I am very happy about this laptop, it’s light and keyboard is wonderful. I used to have a MBP mid 2012 (main downsides: it was heavy and thick) till now. I am just really hopeful that this MBA will work for me for at least next five years. I am still wondering whether to exchange it for MBP, but I really need something light. And btw, video was very professional and useful. Thank you!!
I have the same questions ... Next year I would certainly do distance school and I wanted an MBA with the same upgrades, but for $100 more I wonder if I should not choose the MBP instead ... I would like to keep my laptop for a really long time

But right now I have an ASUS which gives me some problems even if I only have it for 3 years. Since the start of lockdown, I watch reviews on the MBA. What stresses me the most are the comments regarding the thermal (?) I had decided to take the i5 with 16 GB RAM, but now the Pro is out and I hesitate 😭 I do no edit, just write work and watch Netflix 🤣 but I want my laptop to last me a long time and I'm the type of person to open several tabs at the same time so I don't want my computer to lose its power after a year ... Great video. Trouble is I'm still undecided. Typing this on a early 2011 MacBook Pro. Upgraded to 8GB DDR3 and 250GB SSD. As I keep my machines a long the next purchase will have to be the right spec at time of purchase. Would class my self as a light user but can afford the extra cost of the pro. But we all like value for money and that includes me. So MBA with 16GB RAM or the MBP with 16GB RAM ?
If you keep your macbooks for that amount of time I would recommend the 16 gigabytes of RAM MBA 😊✌🏽
Hi, great video. Would you mind giving me some further advice based on my use case? I need something that’ll last me 5-6 years through my last year at school and then uni. I do AH computing science which i plan on using this for as well which would mean coding in JavaScript, Visual Basic, c++ etc as well as html and databases but only for a year. However, on all other accounts I would have a normal student uses. What would you recommend?

Very nice comparison, very fair. I've just ordered a MacBook Air with 16Gb RAM and 512Gb SSD. I'll be doing mostly light stuff, and a bit of Logic Pro music, but want to keep it for a few years -- and I also just like the design and finish of the gold Air. Keep up the good work.

Would the MacBook Pro be a better choice for someone who lives in a country with a tropical climate? It tends to get REALLY HOT here :( I'm kinda concerned with overheating since I also want to use software for editing photos and videos + I'm a student
I would say that is an appropriate assumption, I would agree, if you are someone who deals with high temperatures in your climate then the pro model might be better suited

Thank you for your video review! I have been going back and forth trying to decide between the Mac book Air/ Pro and i3/i5. I like lightweight lap tops for travel and I had a 2015 air for 4 years before the motherboard went kaput, do I need to buy another lap top. Still not sure what to choose to be honest. I don't want to spend a huge amount of money on a lap top that can't survive long term and I do eed to make sure I can do minor video editing/photo editing ( I do this about 3-4 times a week), along with regular web browsing, creating spreadsheets and landing pages, minor web design, etc. but I also do A LOT of zom calls now and I need to make sure I will be able to make that work because it's for my job, so the overheating/ fan worries me, along with the longevity of the computer. Any suggestions? Should I wait for 2021 when hopefully they fix the crappy webcam and maybe dare I say fix the fan issue? Or just bite the bullet and get a MBP? And would the baseline be enough if I am storing videos/photos/ recordings, or would I need to upgrade to the i5? I don't think I'd like the touch bar, but if it works well I can live with it. Would appreciate your input. Thanks!

Great breakdown of the pros of each machine! The only thing you didn't mention was that if you're looking at the MBA i5 with 16GB RAM, it's only an extra £100 to get the base MBP also with 16GB, which I think then makes the MBP worth considering over the MBA for the better screen, performance and cooler running temps.
Very true! But that might be over kill for some users, the air is lighter and thinner which suits some people plus why spend another £100 for a computer that you won't use it's potential, £100 is still £100 saving 😊 I was basing my recommendations on how people use their macbooks rather than looking at just specs, the screen, performance and cooler might be wasted on the student who only uses safari and word and if a student can save £100 then I think they would, but yes you are right Chris depending on the customers use case 😊✌🏽

This was the most clear and helpful video I’ve found so far on this debate. I am a current grad school student with 1 year left. I will more than likely be using this laptop for school work and also teletherapy. I was leaning towards MBA i5 16GB. Amazing video! Could you maybe provide me with some advice regarding Logic Pro? Is the MBA i5/i7 enough or should I really go for the base MBP? I’m a college student and do some occasional music production on the side. Currently working from a 4GB RAM toaster so this will be an upgrade either way.
Base model would be fine but upgrade the RAM as this is what you will need most!

Yes it will, webcam usage did affect performance from my uses, so I think you will be fine my friend!
I currently have the 2020 MBA i5 8GB and when I stream online classes the CPU temp kicks up to 100 degrees and the fans run full blast. However, this could be from the platform I am using (BlackBoard Collaborate). I haven't had issues when using Zoom or GoToWebinar. Hope that helps!

I had some experience using MBA while having my classes in Skype and Viber and I was very dissappointed. The fan run full blast and it got extremely warm so fast. I decided to get rid of it and now I'm thinking about MBP, but I'm still afraid of these troubles with overheating.

Or do I need the MBP + 16gb ram? I am a little reluctant to exceed my budget of £1,168 (educational discount price in UK), but I also see the 16GB ram upgrade would be quite beneficial as you've stated, if I decide to for the MBP. Hi! Great video, but I’m still pretty torn. I’ve never owned a Mac before, and am in need of a laptop. I’m looking to Apple as I’m hoping it’ll last me for 5+ years. I’m working as a research assistant and am hoping to pursue a PhD in the next few years. Work-wise, and with potential future study, I should always have access to computers ‘on-campus’, however as/when I bring work home (increasingly likely these days!) I’ll be using: Word, Excel, Internet - but also potentially statistical programmes (e.g. SPSS), potentially basic coding (e.g. MATLAB) and potentially some straight forward audio and/or video editing. I’ll also potentially be looking at programmes like MRICron for basic assessment of MRI scans. All of this said, I’m currently without a personal computer, working from home with a work laptop and I don’t want to overkill on the cost of a personal device if it’s not necessary. Given the upgrade recommendations for the MBA (which I was considering too) it brings it to a very similar price as the MBP. I’ll be purchasing using education pricing, and upgrading the base MBP to 16gb RAM would only cost me £70 more than getting a MBA i5 16gb... Does it make sense to get the Pro rather than the Air in my case, in your opinion? Sorry for such a long message, I’m just so indecisive! Thanks in advance for any responses and thank you for the video 😊

I’m in the process of purchasing a new MacBook. I have a mid-2012 MacBook Air, and it is showing its age. It is slow and it makes a lot of noise, especially when I am in Google Hangouts or Zoom.
I am considering purchasing a new MacBook Air with an i5 processor and 16 GB of ram. I want this computer to last me at least 5 years. I am worried about the potential heating issues, however. One more thing, I would attach my computer to an external monitor and use my Magic Keyboard and Mouse. I am working from home, and I need to run Citrix to do my job.
Would the MacBook AIr be an appropriate purchase, or would an entry-level MacBook Pro be more suitable? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely the best informative video I have seen on the two MacBook’s. As I only do freelance work (Web browser based or documents) I went for the i5 MBA. Had the old 2012 MBP for years until it went belly up and I had to grab a Thinkpad T450 as an emergency laptop due to my need for hot swap battery 27 hours without charge with 2 swap batteries. Still going to bring that on long travel but the new Air will be my main driver. Everything is so much more snappy in OS X. You sir just got a new subscriber due to your honest review and comparison.

If you are not having any issues with your 2013 pro then I would say the Macbook Air would be fine for you but if you use it more than 3/4 times a month for hours, the go for the pro as it will stay cooler!

Hi, I need your suggestions on buying a Macbook (either Air or pro). I learned that Pro is doing a better job compared to Air in terms of performances and irrespective of the latest generation of Intel chips. However, I would like to seek your suggestions on choosing the right Macbook for sophisticated performances.
My work task would be I) documenting, ii) browsing webs for research and iii) working with software for analytics, imaging et. All these tasks would be performed whenever I login to my computer. In such cases, the computer shouldn't suffer from sluggishness.
On considering these points, both Macbook Air (i5, 10th gen, 512 SSD) and Macbook pro 2020 (base model) cost the same price. Now, which one is the best to buy in terms of performances? Thank you.

Thank you so much for your effort! Hard a really hard time choosing, because the i5 Macbook Air and base model Macbook Pro 2020 are exactly the same price. The pro has better performance but less storage, while the air has more storage, has a newer processor, and does not have a touch bar (which I've thought was kinda gimmicky). I'm a medical student and in need of an upgrade (my 2013 Macbook Pro has served me well), and I decided to get the pro instead, since I don't really store a lot of files locally, and would appreciate the pro's better performance and thermals (I do a lot of zoom conferences with several tabs open in the background). This was a great review! Will watch your other videos!
thank you so much bro literally I spent a whole week pretty much editing that script and researching almost everything and testing everything between these two models 😂 I think for your uses the MacBook Pro would be the best option so glad you went for it and the thing is if you need extra storage you're much better off buying an external SSD for the same money because you'll get double the amount of storage and we can use it in any future Mac that you buy in the future ✌🏽😊
