Both the context and the running gag tell us that it has to be him and he still has to be employed.
The way AJ Phoenix talks to Phoenix really reminds me of how he acted with Apollo. Giving him a piece of information so unbelievably absurd that pretty much destroys the image of Phoenix Wright. And just like with Apollo, Phoenix is asking why did it end up this way and what happened to cause Phoenix to act almost like a different person. The cold Phoenix Wright portrayed in Apollo Justice is honestly my favorite. I love that as you play the game, you realize that Phoenix never really changed as a person. He just became a fucking master at his craft. Pulling off the ultimate bluff and using his wisdom and skills to influence the events of Apollo Justice behind the scenes. But I could be misremembering as it’s been a very long time since I’ve played AA4. I definitely remember Case 4 sucking massive tanooki testicles though. Edit: It was not case 4 that I disliked. It was case 3. I forgot that AA4 only has 4 cases. I was stuck on the third case because of that part where Klavier is like, “Bro, listen to my song and tell me what’s wrong with it.” I was so frustrated. It’s your song Gavin! you clearly know the answer but you want me to point it out? And the killer was so obvious and I just couldn’t pin him because they wanted me to listen to a song made on a DS sound chip ; -;
I agree! I tried my best to depict 33' Phoenix as the one in the actual game because I like how he is in AA4. We saw him saying nonsense (especially in the 1st case of the series) because instead of usually Phoenix's, we were in Apollo's point of view instead. We had no clue how Phoenix turned into almost a different person, like _really_ "this is not the Phoenix that I used to know" such person. It's not because he was being nonsense, it's just that we hadn't understood him and the situation yet, so when we reached the last case both the players and Apollo would be like "ah now I see why." And that's terrific moment to experience!

I was fine with the case itself, because struggling to pin the guy for the thing he obviously did showed just how bad things had gotten in the dark age of the law, but the stupid song and clip made me hate the Gavinners as much as Apollo did

Ngl this is actually a really good fanfic. I’m writing about a similar setup for a certain project of mine with other AA characters, and this is a really good template for ideas. Nice work!

And he wasn't seeing anyone, I suppose. After what happened to him and Dahlia, it's safe to assume he put his thoughts about relationships aside.
