  • How long do you think it takes to walk a mile in Kalamazoo, Michigan?
Walking in American cities has its share of common challenges.
West of downtown, a heavily-engineered strip of winding roadways occupies a 400-foot wide swath of land along the rail line that divides downtown from its neighbors to the west.
The City of Kalamazoo is about to transform this torrent of traffic into a safe, walkable linear park that safely connects Western Michigan University in the south, Kalamazoo College to the west, and the amenities of downtown in the northeast.
Locals, especially students, have voiced that walking this area is unsafe. Before we can fix any of these problems, however, we had to experience them for ourselves.
I created this video as part of our team’s research and exploration of West Michigan Avenue prior to our design charrette for the area from May 20-24, 2024.

Did you know it’s often safer crossing illegally when you’re a walker then using the crosswalk?
I was often using the crosswalk with the green light, but a car is turning right didn’t slow down to look for me and almost hit me and I had jump out of the way. I ended up later always Crossing halfway down so I could see when the cars are stopped, and they would not hit me
This was in Orlando and also Fort Lauderdale where they required to stop, but can usually turn right after they stop or yield but they usually drive well over the speed limit and some of them don’t even look if there’s a walker

the way you cross roads is extremely dangerous, you don't have to slow down and stop cars like a traffic cop and give them a thumbs up when they pass your weird test. just wait for a gap in traffic and seize it...

He has the legal right to cross there, he has the right of way. It being dangerous proves his point of how poorly designed it is. The thumbs up is a bit awkward I agree

A thumbs up would be considered a common sign of thanks in many parts of the world. Not awkward at all

There are very few cities in the U.S. that are as dismal as this one. Or a video more depressing.

Actually, I don't find the scene dismal at all. There seems to be a good number of nice old houses lining most of this stretch. It is raining...which I personally love. You want dismal, go to the Bronx...or to western Massachusetts...or south Chicago, to name just a few.

The majority of cities in the United States are as Dismal as this one, and I’m not talking about the weather or the beautiful old buildings, I am talking about the way the city is not orientated toward making pedestrian safe.
