The 25-foot-long "Reclining Liberty" is set to become a Wonder of Washington next month. The re-imagination of Lady Liberty by artist Zaq Landsberg, first displayed in New York, will take up residence in Arlington, Virginia just across the Potomac River from the Capital.
Inspired by the Reclining Buddha statues of Asia, the Reclining Liberty is a hands-on interactive public art piece that inspires contemplation. It will be displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington from August 5 through next summer.
"I think your general American thinks of men in bronze, old statues," Landsberg said. "And so this literally turns that horizontal and encourages you to touch it and brings the message down to a human scale and approachable level."
"Its playfulness and accessibility suggest that the ideals of liberty and freedom represented by the Statue of Liberty are active, tangible, and evolving and need to be directly engaged with, debated, and defended," said Blair Murphy, curator of MoCA Arlington.
"I want to try and describe this idea of liberty that is a freedom, an ability to express ourselves to do what we please," Landsberg said. "But also a kind of a responsibility we all have to protect."
