I was actually working on a submerged cable and some other things near the first spot you showed. I personally haven't seen any halibut but my crew mates have seen some nice ones there! And one of the other spots is close to where I work. I'm getting close to you Billy, I'll find you some day. You can't hide forever 😂
Lots of good tips there, wasn't hard to find the place since i've been fishing there a few times. But no butts yet from that mark sadly. But i've caught them from other marks in the same area though :D

I am lucky enough to live a long way up in Northern Sweden, still quite a trip to Norway but a nice road trip, and am heading to Senja for my first time of Norway shore fishing with the hope (dream) of contacting a halibut (any size would be amazing). Have picked up lots of info from you already, but I just have a quick question, and if you can possibly help it would be fantastic. I am wondering what you would think about this plan (as one of my options) to fish a deadbait coalfish (or similar) close to a bridge support which I know has lots of baitfish around. The depth ranges from 5 metres close to shore and around 45 meters by the bridge supports 80 metres out. That's way beyond my tackle's casting limit, but I can drop a bait down and then walk the rod back to a place on the shore. The bridge is approx 2.5km from the end of the fjord, so maybe not a lot of tide pushing through and the bottom looks fairly smooth and not very rocky? Worth a shout or much better to find more open flowing water? Thank you again for all you do to help us novices (in my case) and more experienced angles and of course I totally understand if you don't have time to reply. Best wishes, Paul
Hi Paul, glad you like the videos. As far as your plan for the bridge goes. It's fishing, you can never determine what the outcome is going to be! If the halibut are targeting live fish! The outcome might not be so good. But if they are in an opportunistic mood, a dead bait might work. With fishing it is always easiest just to learn as you go. I'm the only way to find out is to try it! So go right ahead, the worst that can happen is you won't catch anything. And the best, well you might catch a truly great fish. Tight lines brother 😁👌

I especially thank you for your inspirational videos as, and I can't believe it, but I actually caught a big Halibut on my first day! With your advice in mind, I had an idea where to fish, and where I was fishing I chose to swim out and drop the bait as my simple running leger rig and a 6 inch dead coalfish (I think) didn't cast very well. After only about 2 hours, there were a couple of tiny knocks on the rod and then the reel clicked a few times and then just took off and there was no doubt what it was. Such an amazing fight with 3 or 4 really long runs. I didn't think I was going top get it in, but it eventually tired. It was around 1m to 1.2m (maybe more)! Once it was at the edge of the dock my big carp landing net was no help at all and I had the big gaff hook but being single-handed and, as I wanted to release the fish, I didn't want to risk messing up the gaffing as haven't done that before and while I was faffing about thinking what to do, the fish had recovered and just powered off again and the line separated on the mussels on the jetty supports. I had a single circle hook which I had seen on the outside of the jaw, so it was probably a nice release. I managed a tiny bit of video/pics once it was beaten, but they don't do it justice. Gave me extra appreciation for the quality of your videos and how you make everything look so easy. Much to learn. Thank you again. Paul p.s Didn't get any more from that spot and the following day I moved to another place which looked good, but ended up having too much tide with loads of seaweed and jellyfish constantly snagging the line and was a bit of a nightmare

@@Billyfishing_watch Thank you for the tip. Will try to get back again before the winter sets in (that's our busy time for working) I need to chill out a bit more next time. Fished pretty much 24/7 for the 2 and a half days I was there and was shattered by the end of it. The fish took an hour before high tide, so maybe concentrating on those few hours before and after high tide is better. Tight lines.
OMG cold smoked halibut😋!!! Few know this, But cold smoked cod is like halibut in texture and taste… But Can be difficult to find!! Delicious!!!! How do you cook your halibut Billy?? And What do you serve for the halibut? 😋 I Love fish my self!

On your favorite White baker bread, butter and the halibut… A little fresh dild🤷🏼♂️ Its almost transparent when cold smoked😋 Gentle smoked flavour and tender ! Taste like fish ofcourse.. Some would say expensive, But 4 Nice slices for 4 pieces of bread approx 45kr in danish money - Thats actually a cheap, very tasty luxury dinner.. ! Try it out some day…!

The biggest halibut I have ever hooked, was as shallow as 10 meters and it was far south in Norway. So, you never know when fishing in Norway. I was not fishing for halibut, even if I was fishing with a mackerel filet as bait, and was not expecting halibut, so I was not prepared for how to be able to land it. I was in a 14 foot boat alone and had it to the boat 3 times and would have been able to get it if I had the right tools for it, but finally it got lose because my hook got bent out to much. It was towing my boat a long long way. I have no idea how long I fought that fish, but I was a total wreck after it was over. The halibut was at least 2 meters long and maybe as long as 2.5 meters. It was totally devastating to see it swim off. The deepest I have ever caught a halibut was at 45-50 meters and I have been fishing a lot all down to 400+ meters without hooking a single halibut any deeper than that 45-50 meters, even if it is common some places that people catch them at depths of 100 meters and deeper. And the halibut can be as deep as 2000 meters at times, but I doubt anyone tries to fish for them with a rod and reel that deep... I have also caught halibuts 10-20 meters above the bottom with whole coalfish as bait when I have targeted large cods and large coalfish on the bottom of coalfish shoals. In some areas of Norway you can catch the halibuts very deep, but it all depends on what food source they have at different times of the year. Some times they prey on redfish and they usually live in depths of 100-1000 meters. I had in fact planned to travel to the Bodø area this summer to fish there for 3 weeks with halibut and wolf fish as main targets, but then the starter in my car stopped working and it was not any garage that had time to fix it for 3 weeks and the car will still not be ready this week either... So that was that fishing vacation for this year...
In my experience! the halibut I target, feed either side of low tide. When there is the least water, this will condense the area that they need to hunt in! On some marks, they will only feed on an outgoing tide. This varies place to place depending on the structure on the seafloor!
The halibut don't follow bait fish, they are resident to certain areas. Lie in weight to ambush, mostly. Or Hunt around pears and reefs, for crabs and small fish, sandals ect
@@Billyfishing_watch They feed on Sandals?! Bloody strange feeding habits they have. So basically they feed the same as a Flounder then, don't move much and mostly ambush their prey.

Cold-smoked halibut is of course the best, but I recommend trying to fry halibut with the skin, it's absolutely different than without the skin

They are all pretty much the same, I think navionics is the best. But this one is Lowrence navigation.
