They had massive time on the ball. It was fun to watch and probably a lot of fun for them. That won’t happen against most teams in their ranking level. We will need to find more scoring prowess. I’m worried about depth at CB and still in midfield. Choniere has improved, though.
Marsch mentioned in a recent interview that the club World Cup takes priority over the gold cup according to FIFA…that means already there’s no Davies, Eustaquio or Buchanan. And god knows if that’ll include David too…
@ thanks for sharing. Disappointing in the immediate term but potential for long term development. B team is great to identify new talents and experiment, but not likely to win anything.
@@quilmes99 yeah but if the non-CWC guys all confirm, then it’s a good venue to build on our depth. Plus the US have a few key starters playing for Juventus and I think another team in this CWC, so they’ll also be down a few key guys. Ideal situation IMO is we get the trophy in March, and then use the gold cup to build our depth. Anyway, 4 months till the Mexico game so there’s plenty of time to speculate 😅
For anyone who’s club team has qualified for the club World Cup, they will not be playing in the gold cup. As far as I know, that’s just Alphonso Davies at the moment, but I could be wrong.
Their set pieces improved in this game. That was a key area that needed improvement. Buchanan looked a bit rusty on his finishes but flashes of talent and skill were there. Good to have him back. Crazy to think we didn’t even have a couple key players in the line up.
He didn't look rusty at all. That's just how soccer goes. There are all kinds of missed chances during a game. Aiming a soccer ball off your head is no easy feat.
@ the header was only one miss where he couldn’t direct the ball downwards. He also, missed a pass right in front of him two feet from the goal. I’m not saying he was awful but he definitely didn’t look sharp.
Buchanan's finishing has never been his strength. He looked every bit as good as we'd expect, imo. SO unfortunate he couldn't get a toe poke on that ball sent in by David. Would have been so great for him to net one. He's easily been one of my fav players in the squad.
I think the players that really made their name with the national team this year are Moïse Bombito and Jacob Shaffelburg, who are going to be players that Canada will be seeing and watching for years to come.
However Let add this New Canada is on the up an up...playing nice football and thank god ..they now have better looking kits as well!!!!!! Much deserved Canada and Canadian fans ..you deserve it and continued success!!!!!!!...
It was an interesting window for me. The game in Suriname was a bit dreadful. In Canada it seemed a different team. Heat. Fatigue. I'm not sure. Maybe just a one off. Glad they roared back in Toronto. My big take away was that the team still clicks when the lads are rotated and I'm glad Marsch is doing this. I thought the fresh legs were great this window. I especially liked what I saw from Sigur. Even in the limited time, he seemed very good on the ball. I see big things for him. I love that lots of guys are getting chances on the ball and finding their fit within the team. I think this will be critical in the next 18 months. Every position should have healthy competition. Nothing should be a given. Next man up really means something. Finally, (and this isn't a takeaway so much as a hope), I would love to see more friendlies with competition of our calibre and higher. I know that will not be very realistic in the next year and a half, but it should be a focus for Soccer Canada in perpetuity. Try for 2-3 games per year that really push us.
Good win! It's the type of result that is both expected and required of a team that wants to remain in the ascendancy. Mexico in California in March will be a big test. Thought Miller was better than Waterman in place of Cornelius but our lack of depth there is a bit concerning. Like how the central midfield is coming along. Sigur plays there too, in fact that's all he plays in Croatia. Fullbacks were great. We were playing a drinking game where you had to drink every time Laryea drew a foul and/or got into it with an opponent so we are a bit hung over today lol. Last thing for me is a question that comes up because I am not completely sold on our current wide attacking players and believe we lack depth there (and quality if Buchanan doesn't return to his old form). The fact that we need to turn to a 34 year old Jr Hoilett is clear evidence of this. What is up with Santiago Lopez, has he declared yet? If so, Mexico or Canada? How about Corbeanu? Marsch doesn't rate him? How about Koleasho? Given up on him declaring for Canada?
Santi has said he wants to play for us and has come to a couple NT camps, but hasn't been selected for a matchday squad. Sigur looked really, really good, I wasn't at all expecting him to be as fast on the ball as he's been. I know Marsch has mainly used him as a fullback so far, but from the moment we got him back I've wanted to see what he could do as a defensive midfielder. The best I've ever seen Canada play was the Uruguay match in that 4-2-3-1 and I don't think we can handle top teams without 3 central midfielders. Corbeanu's form has gone off a cliff these past few years. He's got the talent, but can't put it together. As far as La Liga guys I think Justin Smith from Espanyol could really make a difference, he's a DM and really impressed in his debut. Koleosho is likely gone, unfortunately. We'd be able to offer him a larger role than Italy or USA could, but he seems content on only collecting youth caps for Italy and not cap tying himself yet. As for other dual nats... it's a bit of a mixed bag. Luka Kulenovic fit Marsch's system like a glove, and he wins about 75% of his aerial duels when our best strikers in the air only win about 50%. Marsch straight up didn't know who he was until Kloke's article on how we lost him to Bosnia, and I'm furious nobody in the media ever thought to bring it up when we had the expanded roster in October. Now that Luka is gone, our focus needs to be on capping Promise David from USG in Belgium. He's another tall, dominating aerial presence and we don't have anyone like that in our striker pool. I'm not too concerned about CB depth at this point. We're thin there but it's not our worst position and Waterman and Miller have been solid in their minutes there. I'm comfortable saying Davies - Cornelius - Bombito - Johnston is the best backline in Concacaf at the moment, which is crazy when you consider how both CB's weren't really in the picture during the last cycle (Cornelius was depth but rarely played, CSA hadn't heard of Bito).
Shaff and Laryea looked really good together. The left side is a conundrum, cause if we're honest, Davies and Shaff have not linked up well at all. Davies jives well with Millar but Shaff's obviously been more productive up top. I had really hoped to get a look at Adekugbe this window but can understand that Marsch just hasn't had enough time with him yet. Hope we get to see how Davies and Ahmed might pair up at some point prior to '26. Gotta figure out what the most productive pairing is on that left side.
I think our best setup has been starting Millar on the left wing, which allows him to go to work or drop back to let Phonzie cook. If not for the ACL tear he likely would be our starter on the left. Shaff has looked at his best when coming off the bench to shred a tired defence, allowing Davies to focus solely on his defensive duties. I'm curious to see if Marsch tries Buchanan on the left at some point. Shaff drifted right a lot against USA to accommodate Davies, and it was really effective. Tajon is defensively responsible enough to track back and he and Davies have had good chemistry for a while.
All valid points, but how is it that you mention the names of people who didn't even play in this game, but you ignore the dude who literally left his blood on the pitch? (Unless I just missed it.) Kamal Miller deserves a shoutout for effort alone. C'mon, now. This is Canada. If you're out there bleeding because you're playing that hard, you deserve to be recognized.
I have to admit, I have under appreciated Ali Ahmed. He is a really solid player. He does need to work on his end product but his inter play with other players and his build up play, along with his pressing is very good. I probably undervalued him due to him playing in MLS, my prejudice, ooops. That said, I can see him playing at a bigger club in Europe in the future.
Great win. My only disappointment was all the fans dressed in winter gear. It was in the 40’s! Someone needs to tell them they are Canadian and should be out there in shorts and t shirts.
If it was "in the 40s" people would have been dying from heat stroke. What are you even talking about? And there were plenty of people out there with no shirts on at all. Did you even watch the game?
What's your biggest takeaway?
