- Let everyone know how *terrible* these fish are. They are super tasty and super invasive. They have been released from people who decided they no longer wanted them in their aquarium. Hundreds of thousands of lionfish that were caught traced back to just 10 females released. That is all it took.
are they in freshwater lakes and rivers?
Exotic pet owners are so irresponsible
Source of information?
there are also hundreds of container ships which carry invasive species in their ballast tanks. Probably a bigger influence than aquarium owners, not saying you are wrong though.
@@TimoSluIt’s kinda like English Ivy in America - it’s important to note that it only takes a few (or even one!) plant to spread and grow over a whole region without absolutely AGGRESSIVE weeding, but it’s also important to note THAT WE SHIPPED THEM OVER HERE IN BULK so colonists could feel more at home
Lion fish: yall cant stop me! Ive become invasive
Humans: let me introduce you to my appetite.
That will just create a bigger problem that we’ve seen before, introducing invasive species into an area because there is such a demand that people want to “farm” them for a quick profit. It’s happened so many times because we can’t curb our appetites.
They'll never be endangered again
I had it fried and omg it was so delicious and tender
Same with catfish there invasive because they can live pretty much anywhere with water but they are delicious with hot sauce
Humans are most invasive
language is important; 'venomous' not 'poisonous'
What is the difference?
Poisonous: you bite it, you die
Venomous: it bites/stings you, you die
@@Ninebreak999
If it bites you and you die, it's venomous.
If you bite it and you die, it's poisonous.
@@Ninebreak999Poison is ingested. Venom is injected into your bloodstream. You can drink venom and it will not affect you unless you have cuts in your mouth or stomach for it to enter your bloodstream.
@@Ninebreak999poisonous means u have to eat it. Venomous means it will be injected
Important distinction “invasive species” is code word for “some idiot with exotic pets released them into their local ecosystem and now they are wreaking havoc”
in this case probably yes, though it's unclear how many times that happened. I think lionfish were not naturally found anywhere around the americas because they're not normally capable of crossing an open ocean. now they're invasive at least on a long stretch of the atlantic coast.
other common ways invasive species have found new habitats are deliberate release (as hunting targets, as pest control, or even a decoration to make a colony feel like home to settlers), and hitchhiking on ships (especially already early on rats and mice, but also mussels and other marine life on the hulls), or nowadays quite commonly potted plants, rocks, and fresh produce (those spread insects and fungi in particular). what's also extremely widespread but hardly recognized by the public are invasive plant species, as essentially all agricultural and landscaping species and cultivars have been brought to any place climatically suitable, and whenever they proved particularly viable, they spread.
@@Ass_of_AmalekYapper
oh well, so what. what if you left them be. in 100 years what will have happened? not much probably

@@Hardcoremetis sell it as manure
Seriously , if you want to eat the invasive species as one solution , it CANNOT be expensive . It’s gotta damn near be subsidized like we subsidize corn
Subsidize eating it and suddenly it gets profitable for someone to breed them
They’re hard to catch. If it didn’t sell good for all that work no one would catch them 😅😅
@@testerwulf3357
Well high demand would also do that
Lionfish cannot be caught using traditional fishing methods, that's why fishermen can't catch enough of them despite their "invasive" label in the area
What’s the difference. Why are they more difficult?
@rodolfoescobosa6462 fish are typically caught en masse in netting and traps rather than traditionally with fishing rods when in a wide-scale fishing operation. the sharp, venomous spines on lionfish causes damages and injection of toxins to eachother's flesh if they are all put in a tightly sealed area together, in this case being the fishing nets/traps. it significantly drops the quality and shelf stability of the meat if it is damaged and in some cases makes it unsafe to consume
@@rodolfoescobosa6462I'm pretty sure they're poisonous in their spines... always thought they were ugly tbh
@@TheFakeyCakeMakerThey are venomous not poisonous. If the spine sticks you and the venom enters your bloodstream you are in trouble but you can eat them no problem.

I am a hunter as well as my family and we love invasive species. Not for destroying our environment but for the abundance of basically free food 😉
It’s a double win for everyone, I get food and in return help native species regain their habitat. Also no such thing as trash fish, it’s either tacos or compost in this house.
You and your family are heroes
Tacos, compost, or bait. I imagine plenty of other critters would LOVE some scraps of lionfish. Perfect for hooks or snares.
Go get em!
I think "It's either tacos or compost" is a great idea for a shirt

Agree 👍
Lion Fish is very tasty I must say! I had it in Florida and still one of the best fishes I ate in my life 😍
Nice to know! Live in Florida. What part of florida were you in when you had this experience? I’m in south florida. It would be nice if it were close by!
My son and i were catching carp as fast as we could bring em in but we dont eat em. I noticed a guy and his son watching so i asked him if he wanted them . He did, i told him to go get a cooler and he could have em all they came back with 2 brand new coolers he just bought. We caught fish all day and filled his coolers he was so happy he said he was going to get equipment and a license and catch em himself. Good luck✌️🎣🎣🎣
Lionfish are super tasty. All you have to do is simply be careful around its spikes where the venom is. They aren't poisonous at all. Also, if you like spear fishing, they are very easy to catch. They practically don't move away.
Lionfish: I don’t need speed, I am sting tank
Human: hahaha very funny *yoink*
Lionfish have 18 venomous spines and lurk in the deepest depths hiding in coral. Catching them with nets has become impossible without tangling and killing coral, and they are commonly spearfished.
when we can't beat it, eat it. 😂
is the same thing with asian carp
asian carp is considered a trash fish because there are so many of them and often populate dirty waterways, but they are really good to eat even though they can live in dirty water
No Asian carp are best used for fertilizer
@@illinidave im asian, so we prefer to eat it
but their poop is good fertilizer especially for rice patties
They say these fish sell just fine.
It's such a wild attitude for Americans to have when they slurp down nasty catfish like it's a delicacy 😂😂
As far as i know in my state in the US carp are considered trash fish because of all the bones, you either make soup or dont bother with it is what i was always told
The Lion Fish doesn't stand a chance against the king of invasive species, humans.
peak human species, the chinese, they probably eat the venomous spine too
Lol
The fish may be invasive, but we are invasier 😎 (that isn't something good)
Lionfish are by far one of the tastiest fish in the ocean, if not the best tasting fish in the ocean
They are absolutely delicious and they are super easy to clean and filet
They are only difficult to catch unless you have a speargun or pole spear
I totally agree, had it a few months ago and the texture makes it so delicious and juicy omg. It’s better than snapper and parrot fish
Wheres the poison on the fish? Is it cut out?
@@154g It's in the fins and spines that you see the chef cutting off, I believe
@@154git's the fins that hold the venom but in short yes it cut out

Not even a well-known source knows the difference between poison and venom. 🤦🏻♀️
I’ve always wanted to try one of these! I’ve heard they’re super tasty 😋
They arent poisonous, theyre venomous.
They aren’t poisonous. They are VENOMOUS.
Sure...but if you get poked by a spike you are poisoned! (Not venomed) Lolol. I know what you mean tho...my point is English is funny
Invasive species when they find out humans have a taste for them:
" hehe, I'm in danger "
I feel like many of the world’s problems can be solved with our appetite.
If they're ever available in my supermarket, I'll buy it. I love fish and from the comments here, lionfish sounds really yummy! 😋
More chefs should cook it too.
We eat the lion fish here in Jamaica too. It is soooo tasty 😋
The story is so incoherent. One minute “catcher couldn’t catch enough of them” implying there are few in between and can’t provide the demand the next minute “people are trying to prove the skeptic wrong” by trying new things with the fish. Like bruh, do you just read from the script without thinking?
Yes
They can’t catch enough because they are small and and like to hide in coral not because they are “few and far between”
@@user-xj8wy4uu1q You totally missed the point.
I think it's more people know it's an invasive species in areas, and are making it part of their diet to try to help fix that problem.

In Florida the Goliath grouper is able to safely eat lion fish, and divers have been encouraging wild grouper to eat them by feeding dead lion fish to them so they know they’re tasty. But unfortunately Goliath grouper are endangered, so there’s just not enough of them to eat them all.
Poisonous is an appropriate word in here . Poisonous means when we bite we die , venomous means when it bites we die
I feel like sabastaian🦞Lion Fish are so beautiful with their flowing fins❤
Lion fish is DELICIOUS! And, unfortunately for the Caribbean, plentiful
Just cover it in Jerk or Cajun seasoning and deep fry it, the heat neutralizes the toxic compounds then it is bon appetite…
When the hunter becomes the hunt😂😂😂😂
They are so good ! I will almost never hop on the boat with out a few !!!!
I imagine that with increased demand the risk of work-related injuries in restaurants serving lionfish will increase
That’s because there is something wrong with your mind.
Talks about red snapper. *shows lane snapper
Those things are little bastards. Good luck to everyone in trying to get rid of them. But also, I’m glad the chef is coming up with interesting ways to cook them.
It will be interesting if they’re gonna create some sort of base or lower which will mean they’re easier to catch especially down in the depths where they can escape humans
I love when some states in us would pay people for catching and killing invasive species, and it’s a good way to pay and get rid of the species, I know globally it’ll be harder as some countries would care and some won’t but I think some international government funding style thing would be able to do it they trade the fish in for money or in the case they keep the fish they get payed slightly less, and now very easy to sell it or get rid of it overall
VERY GOOD NARRATIONS
What the world needs is few sushi chef to turn it aorind.
I think that a really cool trend we as a species can develop. Make a delicacy out of what is too much already. Being it weed, jellyfish, fish, bug, you name it.
Imagine paying a top dollar for a chef to prepare this dish, seeing it in frozen goods section in supermarkets if you want to save some coin.
The foie gras of the future.
I love that humans can over fish every species except the ones that we need to 😢
Lion fish are also really venomous

Lionfish is such a tasty fish
Invasive humans cost us a lot more
Tastiest fish I’ve eaten
I desperately want to eat these. Virginia boy here and they’re a nightmare.
that's awesome. it would be a little more convenient if lionfish got bigger, but they do look bigenough to be reasonably convenient to eat. wild-caught invasive animals, if caught in a low-impact way, are pretty much themost ethically sourced meat possible, since removing them is likely to have a positive impact. and if eating them.becomes popularized, that can become a major source of population control that benefits native species. although in this case I suspect that the native species that could benwfoit from their removal are largely competing fish that are also caught by the same nets. but that's still likely to be a fairer population pressure than they face from predators that are unable to feed on lionfish due to their very powerful poison spine defence.
lion fish are speared
Lion fish are also relatively slow moving as well since they mainly rely on their venomous fins for defence and prey capture. So they are relatively easy to spear issue is finding them
im telling ya, we need fishing robots.
I love Lion fish but it hard to get only those that spear fish catch them and many dont know how to handle them or are afraid of them
I think people should study how they drive the native species into extinction and apply it to invasive species
One thing for sure, I'll eat when I don't have to cook it by myself, the fish looks scandalous 😨
Humans are the biggest and most dangerous invasive species 😅
Oh that's that one fish from hungry shark game
Guys, if we can cook it properly we can control it. No fishes are trash except for those that are really inedible for a human(idk what fishes are those yet)
If there’s one thing that’s truly special about us humans is our ability to eat almost anything by using the magic of _cooking_ . I don’t see people downing mosquito burgers on an international level any time soon, but switching from one fish to another? They better start packing up their bags because things we find delicious go extinct very fast LMAO
Was wondering why I started seeing these at the market
Trust me when i tell you. Try this fish, because im telling you the honest truth this fish taste damnnnn good, what i love the most about this fish, is the meaty texture, not too much bones to prevent you from digging in, the flesh is sooo meaty, i love it escoveiched, or fillet and fried with a sweet and sour sauce. Its good.
Wait. It's mild and fatty like sea bass??? Sign me up to help with the infestation 😆
Can you bring one of lionfish predators to the United States to control them
Lionfish don't really have predators once their spikes develop fully, aside from humans. And if they did, we'd just be creating another problem by introducing another invasive species.
Wait, it sells for the same as native species but they can't catch enough of them? Then why are they a problem? Seems like if they're marketed correctly as a scarcer exotic delicacy they could be up-priced accordingly.
They’re hard to catch, that’s the problem. They’re breed fast and are effective hunters thus damaging for the environment, we can’t catch them as easily and fast as other fish which means we’re barely denting the problem. They’re already more expensive than they’d otherwise be due to the fact they’re hard to catch (low supply, high demand=📈💰); if they were easier to catch they’d sell for cheaper as there’s quite a lot
The fish with the yellow lines, we call croaker and is considered trash..I didnt know ppl ate those
