Very informative and well presented video especially for new chicken owners. I’ve had hens for years and never knew all this. I do feed them Pumpkin seeds. Also a few drops of Ivermectin on the back of their necks kills the worms and mites. Most feed stores sell liquid injectable IVM.
I use waxing pumpkin seeds d.e powder. I didn’t know you couldn’t eat the eggs after worming for three weeks. New sub here!

Mix there food with choped Warmwood ( artemisia ) plant and also boil some warmwood leaves and add to their drink it water Warmwood (Artemisia) it’s natural dewormer and also help your chickens to have more eggs because it’s full of vitamins ( in some parts of the Middle East they use it for the chickens to keep them internal parasite free )

I sprinkle some DE in my chicken feed and mix it up real good. I also spread DE around the area where chicken feeders and water is. I also put DE in the coop on the roosting bars and the floor. About four times a year I spread DE in the run . I even thought about sprinkling DE in the bottom of the nesting box. I then put nesting box materials on top. I want to keep my BIG BOYS and MY GIRLS as healthy as possible. Someone let me know what you think.
Too much DE can be detrimental to both human and chicken respiratory health. So long as it doesn’t get too dusty, you can use it most places. I put some in my nesting boxes.
I do the same. Not too much. Never in nesting boxes; there I use natural herbs and flowers 💐🌿

@@dragutak Food-grade means the heavy metals have been filtered out, so it makes it safer to be around.
DE will never help to deworm you chickens nor killing mites
Dont know if its best practice or not but I put my chickens all out and dust the whole coop at once with a leaf blower after cleaning. Alos i made whitewash and did the floor and walls etc before putting down new bedding
Really surprised to hear that cucubits help deworming chicken, but for what its worth mine have self limiting supply of melons all yearlong
funny. My wife had the same boots and our rooster attacked the boots whenever she wore them in the run

One of my girls was acting strange and tired all the time. She had a poopy butt. I thought she might be egg bound but couldn’t feel an egg in her tummy which was bloated. I took a poop sample in to our vet and they found whip worms. Eww! I’m a bit stressed because I just cleaned out the coop and spread the natural bedding with dried poop around our fruit trees as fertilizer. Now I’m afraid I spread the whip worm around as I just learned they will live in soil and hatch! Our area rains a lot so DE may not work in the yard. Ahh what to do with the yard? The hen got prescribed Panacur.
I also added garlic cloves in one waterer and drop of oregano oil in our other (gallon) waterer, and few drops ACV in a bowl with water.
I will try your yogurt recipe. Thank you for sharing about cucumbers and melons. I’ll try that too!
So sorry to hear about your hen! Glad the vet was able to help her. The soil is loaded with parasites of all sorts, and a healthy flock with a good gut can usually handle them. So prevention and keeping the ladies healthy is usually the best bet! If you can spread DE on the poopy areas in your coop, that will kill off the parasites in their poop before your spread them around the yard or put in compost. If you're concerned you might have an imbalance of microbes in your soil, you could look into beneficial nematodes for your area/crops/trees to see if you can introduce more of the "good guys" :-) Hope this helps!

I heard that hot water kills the eggs and a blow torch because the eggs can live for urs and in any climate also most chemicals dont kill them.

Use a container to feed out of. It saves you feed and your birds aren't eating food whith poop on it. I use safe guard wormer, its great.
How often am I supposed to give the wormer recipe to my chickens?, also would like to know if this is safe for chicks, how much would I give to a chick, and how often would I give them it. would be very helpful if someone answers this!
As a preventative (haven't seen any worms), we usually feed them a bowl of this in the spring and again in the fall. If we saw worms in their feces, we'd repeat it again once a week for a couple of weeks. We've never fed it to chicks, but the only thing I think would need to be decreased is the yogurt as too much isn't good for their digestion, the other ingredients I think would be fine for a chick since they are just herbs and seeds.
Hi love your video! I have only 2 buff orpingtons. Have had them for 3 yrs, and now I notice they both have a messy behind. What causes that?
Chickens can get loose stool for a plethora of reasons. From as simple as drinking too much during the heat of summer, eating something they shouldn't have, internal parasites, etc. I highly recommend the two books below as they are what I use to diagnose our flock (along with googling).

Can you still eat their eggs if we found some white long worms in their poop?
Egg withdrawal is required if you give them a medical/Chemical dewormer. Hope you’re flock is able to kick the worms soon!

@@Ayoventures No need to avoid eating their eggs using natural remedies, just the strong pharmaceutical stuff. As far as I know the worms are just in their digestive tract and not a problem with the eggs. We still eat them, but we don't usually eat our eggs raw.
Hi! Worms CAN get in the oviduct and into the eggs if the chicken has a high volume of worms inside. Yuck.
I know what I will be checking tomorrow! All of our hens have not been laying good lately. Do you find that their egg production is down when they have worms?
If they are really sick, egg production may drop. But the biggest reason hens won't lay this time of year is the daylight. Hens need about 12 hours of daylight minimum to lay and their peak production is 14-16 hours of daylight. We currently have only about 10 hours of daylight right now, so our flock is on winter vacation right now too. Not a single egg since November 12th! We allow our ladies to take a break, but you can add artificial lighting in the coop to make up the extra hours needed. The only exception to this daylight rule is first-time layers. They seem to not care about the daylight their first year, but every year after will take a winter break.
@@cottagefarmstead Thank you! We have 10,5 hours of daylight right now so I bet that is what it is. Our Rhode Island Red has never really cared and she usually lays most of the winter. But her last egg was about 2 weeks ago. Thank goddess we have a farmer close by that has 350 hens so we can buy eggs from him.

What are specific herbs used in the recipe?
I will make the girls a batch of this, thanks! Also with dewormer medicine that states: Eggs for human consumption: Do not use in chickens producing eggs for human consumption, is that why you wait 3 weeks before you can consume their eggs again?

The biggest help is fresh cucurbit family seeds, especially cucumbers. We throw as many squash, melons, and cucumbers in to the chickens as we can for a few weeks when we have worms.
Yes, that’s why we wait. My very old bottle had a withdrawal time listed on it. I haven’t bought any since then though.

We spread DE all over the coop in the spring and fall. I think I mentioned it at the beginning of the video. DE does not work once it gets wet though, but it is a great way to prevent the worms from spreading amongst others in the coop. :-)
Does anyone know how long pasture should be fallow to ensure the worms have died?
At a minimum, it is usually recommended about 3 weeks. But it would really depend on the lifecycle of the particular parasitic worms you're trying to allow to die off.

Is the DE that you sprinkle in the yard food grade(edible)? We put DE in our coffee every morning and we put it in our cat's food. Is it possible to put it in the feed or water of the chickens? I've never raised chickens or any farm animals so I don't know if they can tolerate it.
We do use food grade as that is what is available at our local feed store. DE disappears in water, so that wouldn't work. Some folk do put it in their food. But some people say DE can mess with their respiratory system. We personally just keep in in their bedding/nesting boxes

The wormer wazin does not exist they dont sell it anymore. Please update your records or supply another.
Unfortunately they removed it from the market and now the only way to get a poultry wormer (at least in our area) is to go through a vet. We have not needed to go that route in 7+ years, so I’d recommend reaching out to a local vet if stronger medication is needed as I don’t know what is available these days.
How long does it take for the yogurt mix to start working and get rid of the worms?
We usually keep up the protocol of fresh cucurbit seeds, DE, and yogurt mixture for about 3 weeks as that is about the length of a worms life cycle. Yogurt part is weekly or more often if it looks like there are many worms. Sprinkle DE on wormy poo in coop frequently, and toss a cucumber/melon/squash in the run daily. Is there anythinf you can spray in your yard to kill worm eggs?
Not that I know of, we give our dog a dewormer each month as parasites are unfortunately normal in outside.
I bought raw pumpkin seeds from Amazon. Will those work? Pumpkins are out of season right now where we are.
Unfortunately the seeds have to be fresh. It's the slimy coating on the seeds that helps kill off the worms. I've bought grocery store imported cucumbers, melons, and other squashes out-of-season before just to help my flock out when pumpkins aren't in season.

Not sure why people talk about a pecking order. I have never seen this with my chickens and I hatch chicks all the time. If you keep them busy and happy they don’t care about the other birds, they all hang out as friends even the little ones.

We tried the Durvet Strike III poultry wormer pellets last time we needed a stronger wormer and it worked for us. I think we got them from Amazon.

@@Abdulwahab-bc2xl the best natural method for our girls is tons of fresh cucubrit seeds (squashes, melons, etc.) for a few weeks. In the absence of that we make the yogurt herb mix. Hope your flock gets healthy again soon!

@@Abdulwahab-bc2xl so sorry to hear about your chicks! Do you happen to have access to medicated chick feed? We’ve had issues with coccidia with chicks and that feed usually clears it up. For the cucubrits, we do fresh, we get overgrown/overripe for humans zucchini, cucumbers, squash, melons, from a local farm and just cut them in half and let the chickens chow down. There’s a coating on the fresh seeds that is anti-parasitic.

More videos showing up recently all of a sudden trying to scare folks away from having chickens..... WHY IS THAT ???? I had chickens for over 20 years and never had a sick one.
Algorithms are weird things as this video is approaching 2 years old. It’s a blessing that you have never had a sick one. Some of us are not so lucky.

If we have access to pumpkins, we let them go for it, but any cucurbit seed has the same anti-worm coating. :-) we usually have more access to cucumbers and squash
