"Little Nellie" is a real, flying craft. It is an "autogyro", the idea being developed during the early 20th century, although on a much larger scale than the one seen here. The actual craft shown is a miniature version of the technology created by Ken Wallis who used to appear on British TV occasionally to explain his creation, and it is he who is flying Little Nellie here on the non-closeup shots.

ROALD DAHL was actually an intelligence officer during the Second World War and it was during that time he came into contact with Ian Fleming who was also in the intelligence field. Dahl was apparently a bit of a ladies man... perhaps some of that became part of the character of Bond? Christopher Lee (Saruman) was also a member of the same intelligence branch as Fleming and Dahl but I don't know if they worked together.

    • @swannvictor1388

    • @MattDeMille

It goes even deeper. And I say this 100% serious:
Dahl was the co-between for FDR and Churchill. Both 33rd Masons, as am I. Wonka is based on real things: Wonka is the Master of his Lodge as only he wears a hat, his factory is a D.U.M.B. (Deep Underground Military Base), his father knew about Antarctica with his mountaineering and this is even in the factory as Mt Chocolate (look into Operation: Highjump 1946), and you could even say the Loompas were, well, not human. Also, Gene Wilder was military-psychology in the 1950s. Hence, the psycho-tunnel scene in that movie.
I have spoken with many Masons worldwide about these matters. Just as Dahl, Fleming's work is based on reality. And ritual. I have read all of Fleming's novels and studied them deeply. There's so much there you don't see . . .
You know about John Dee? The Queen's Sorcerer? Or the rituals in every Bond book AND film?
Film, too: Got my Masters in film from AFI 2010. Had class with Sean Connery in 2008. It's that kind of school. I . . . have had access to a lot of information.
Long story short: James Bond is real. And so is Willy Wonka.

Roald Dahl was in the RAF. He flew in the Battle of Crete. He was a fighter pilot. Eventually, he became an intelligence officer in the RAF, which is not a spy, but someone attached to an RAF squadron who takes note of interesting things in pilots's reports and passes info to the pilots.

The two female Japanese leads also appeared together in "What's Up, Tiger Lily?" and "King Kong vs. Godzilla." The visual of the large spacecraft opening up to swallow the smaller one is, in my opinion, directly borrowed from a "Lost In Space" episode, as I demonstrated in this video that I made: th-cam.com/video/5CopYmgjn_Y/w-d-xo.html

what you have to understand is that this idea to find ninjas on a bond story was ahead of its time concidentaly given at the time you ve seen ninjas as a type of exotic japanese flavor action providing element in movies same way you would see kung fu for chinese ones BUT while pop culture over the years tried imply historical ninjas (shinobi) had their own martial art ( ninjutsu etc) any historical sources we have show that actual ninjas were mostly active as SPIES and secondary as sabotage and assassination experts so unorthodox guerilla warfare specialists (and you don't find fighting training manuals among the sources but manuals on how to sabotage and to disguise and avoid detection) who thus were complimentary to the honnorbound samurai class interms of usage by tacticians as they were unrestricted by bushido code. So a spy movie having japanese historical spy class modernized in it makes perfect sense

I saw a lot of Connery Bond moves as a kid watching late night TV while my parents were out somewhere partying. I realize now these films were shown ALL ON THE SAME LOCAL STATION, over several weeks, so someone working late night at the TV headquarters had a Connery Bond thing going. I was a kid; I had no idea who James Bond was ... at first. By the fourth weekend, it was _You Only Live Twice_ and I was captivated by these spy movies!

In addition to the Austin Powers movies, there are two 1960s parodies with James Coburn, "Our Man Flint" and "In Like Flint". Also. due to a contract dispute, the people who had the rights to Casino Royale could not do a "real" Bond film with the property in the 1960s, so there's a "psychedelic comedy" version of Casino Royale from that time that is also a spoof of the genre, with Sir Davin Niven as James Bond. Also has appearances by Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, and Woody Allen. Demented, but fun.

This movie reminds me of Moonraker, probably the most underrated Bond movie ever. The impopularity was that they showed off the space shuttles already in 1979, when the first launch of the Colombia space shuttle wasn't until 1981. People just didn't believe it then, because they'd never seen the space shuttles before.
Spectre played by Donald Pleasance in this is awesome. He's played equally well in later Bond movies by Telly Savalas.

But worry not, Connery will have his last with Diamonds are Forever, where he gives a better performance than here, imo.

Interesting extra point: even though he was a heavy smoker, Roger Moore insisted that his bond never smoked on camera. That's why his bond never smoked, not even a cigar.

The instrumental version of the theme song of this movie is perhaps my favorite of the Bond movies. Nothing beats Shirley singing Goldfinger, but the instrumental music that plays at the end as they're in the raft and then the sub emerges gets me every time. Overall this is as you say a solid Bond movie.

The last Bond film Connery took at least mildly seriously. Just wait till you get to Diamonds Are Forever. Pure camp. All that’s left is Shirley Bassey to take seriously. That’s not entirely bad. But it’s definitely not From Russia or Goldfinger. I do like the idea of Bond “dying” in the beginning though. They got that part right. But how is Bond both a naval commander AND a spy? Talk about blowing your cover. Pretty lousy spy if he’s making the papers. LOL. Still a good film with Connery and a Bond villain straight out of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I love this movie because despite the preposterous yellowface gag, the Japanese guys rock. Tiger Tanaka and the ninja comandoes are the highlight of the movie. James Bond isn't a typical "white savior" who comes to Japan to show the locals how it's done. He's the special consultant brought in to assist them because of his previous experience with SPECTRE. He's allowed to conduct his own investigation but calls them for help a couple times and they come in clutch. The one time Bond shows off Western superiority is with "Little Nellie" and that was more about Q. (But it is funny that in their dick-measuring contest, British tech shows its superiority by being *smaller* and more efficient than Japanese tech) And as horribly racist/misogynist the treatment of Japanese women were, both "Bond girls" were badasses.

Sean Connery does return one more time in the film Diamonds Are Forever which will be his last film in the official franchise after the next film due to Lazenbys withdrawl from the role. Sean Connery did return for James Bond in the 1980s in the unofficial Bond movie Never Say Never Again.

Uncrewed space launch vehicles *always* have self destruct mechanisms. In case the rocket flies off course towards populated areas it is necessary for ground control to make it explode before it hits people on the ground. I think that crewed rockets probably also have self destruct abort functionality (in conjunction with a launch escape tower to save the astronauts), but I'm not entirely sure.
Although it is very seldom seen in the 21st century, in the 60s it was not at all uncommon for rocket launches to go badly wrong.
