  • While still in Tarrytown, we see Hope Hose Company 1 (Engine 79) and Conqueror Hook & Ladder Company 1 (Ladder 37), as well as Phenix Hose Company 2 (Engine 76), as they all respond to a call for a partial building collapse on the south side of Tarrytown. As we walk up Main Street towards headquarters, we hear the beautiful sounding fire whistle. We then see Hope Hose respond. Hope Hose is a 2001 E-One. As they approach Route 9, Phenix Hose passes heading south. Phenix Hose is a 1996 E-One. Conqueror Ladder is a 2012 Smeal with a Spartan cab and a 105 foot rear mount heavy duty aerial. Enjoy the response from both rigs. The second siren from Conqueror Ladder is a Carson Mechanical Siren. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The videos were taken on July 14th, 2015.

    Wow, brings back memories, I lived in Tarrytown as a kid, that looked like it was close to the old YMCA Building down there. I remember those horns very well, I had a list on my bedroom wall of the codes as to where the fire was. Thanks for the video.

      Same. I lived kinda near Washington Irving intern school (uptown) so it was easy to hear the horn.

    They had a similar horn in Carbondale pa in the 70s/80s. I used to spend summers there and it would always scare the heck out of us in the middle of the night.

      its called the "blatter system" the amount of times and lenth of the brrrrb sounds is read as an adress.

    • @EmergencyGuy
      @EmergencyGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s an old steam whistle used years ago at a factory. It now runs off of air instead of steam.

    • @EmergencyGuy
      @EmergencyGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re wrong. It may be called the bladder system, but the blasts are NOT read as an address. They’re actually read out as the box alarm. Box 826 in this case.

    I love the whistle. What is the sequence - 7 shorts and 1 long?

    • @FL92002
      @FL92002  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Audinos No. The sequence should be 8, 2, 6. 826 is the Box number, and the amount of whistles reflects that. The long whistle most likely signifies the end of the number in the box.

    • @izzyj4
      @izzyj4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Audinos FL92002 is correct with the whistle sounding the long tones at the end of the number. Many departments still using a telegraph fire alarm system (more commonly called a Gamewell system after the company that mass produced the system) will do that wither their whistles, diaphones (more like a fog horn blap sound) and sirens. Each set of numbers that denotes a specific location is called a "round". The "round" is repeated three or four times. Usually the last number in the round sequence has the long "blast" added in to signify the end of the "round". Many departments vary this to their needs due to multiple horns throughout the village or town or even an echo caused by the sound bouncing through a river valley or hillside.
      +FL92002 great job on the video, I haven't been to Tarrytown in a long time.

    • @FL92002
      @FL92002  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engine and ladder are the only two front pieces of fire fighting equipment at this firehouse. What else were you expecting to see?

    • @thomasjsanford9991
      @thomasjsanford9991 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FL92002 It's not a fire station if there are only 2 trucks..... It's just a garage.
      The community i live in has 6 fire stations to serve about 160,000 people, and the smallest station has 5 trucks

    • @FL92002
      @FL92002  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the people in the fire department would beg to differ. Tarrytown is only about 11,000 people. This is the primary fire house. There are three other firehouses in the town; two single engines and a tower ladder. If it were a garage, there would be repairs done here, and fire apparatus wouldn't be responding from here.

    • @thomasjsanford9991
      @thomasjsanford9991 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FL92002 if I understood you correctly, those three other stations each have only one vehicle, for a total of five pieces of apparatus to cover a Community of 11,000
      By contrast, i grew up in a city of about 4000 people, with a POC fire department with 14 pieces of apparatus at a single station, and another 6 pieces of apparatus in a city-owned garage elsewhere in town, just in case of a catastrophic event. The village 10 miles away has less than 700 people, and has a volunteer department with 8 pieces of apparatus.
      To me, it just seems like Tarrytown isn't putting much of an emphasis on Fire & Rescue...

    • @FL92002
      @FL92002  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The four firehouses are spread out all around town and have a good coverage area for a town that isn't really all that big in terms of area. In addition to that, they can get mutual aid from the neighboring towns. There's nothing "lacking emphasis" about it, as you put it.
