My first airplane ride ever was in the Burchinal's B-25 Mitchell ! Junior was pilot and Sammie was the co-pilot . I was with my friend Thomas Hargrave and we got to Flying Tigers Museum early and was just in awe of the airplanes .....WWII airplanes in Paris ,Texas ! We came from Sulphur Springs and Thomas lost a brother in an old TAC Aeronca when he spun in while hanging on the prop from about 200 feet right over the SS terminal building . Junior had years before put on an airshow in SS with his Bearcat . I will never forget the sound of that airplane screaming above the strip and man he gave it hell too . So back to the B-25 ride . We arrived early and Mr. Burchinal invited me and Thomas a ride in the B-25 if we would go to the church service . We eagerly accepted too !! lol......I remember mostly the Burchinal family there . I was too excited to hear the preaching lol........So here we go ! The thing I remember most was watching that big radial engine bellowing smoke and the SOUND !! .......by the way we took off a dirt air strip ! We lifted off and I was in love with flying from that day forward until now ! They even let us stand behind them as we flew over the Paris , Texas area . People just don't believe the array of aircraft that was there . There was a P-38 on a big trailer that had went down in a cotton field . A Corsair , anf of course the B-17 too ! A few years after the B-25 flight me and Thomas came over to the Museum in my old BC-12D . I am 6'1 and large framed but then I weighed only a 180 pound and the ole 65 horse performed pretty good too ..........we slipped in and landed and Mr. Burchinal let is climb into the B-17 set in the seats and it was just amazing in all I can say , Scott has a fantastic museum and please stop by there . He recently gave an airplane ride to my grandson Zack and Ben Scarborough . I have owned nine airplanes and currently own a J-5A 100hp Cont. My wife flies a Breezy and both airplanes are currently under restoration ................Thank you Junior and Sammy ! ! ! Mike Robbins .
I could grab a beer and listen to old pilot stories all day long. Knowing some of the dunces that I do, a flight in that thing hauling chickens would have made for an interesting evening weather report. "Something new happened when it rained chickens over central Texas after a copilot accidentally opened the bomb bay doors of a B-25 that was hauling chickens as freight. People are calling it one of the seven signs of the Apocalypse." Thanks for bringing history to us.
