One other suggestion I would share for really dark images is to use a tone curve with no shape...linear and blend in screen mode...this maintains the tonality and significantly lightens the image...you can feather the effect with opacity if it is too light...using the tone equalizer can break the image if you are not careful...and a screen blended tone curve to start with allows you not to have to push the shadows as hard when editing....reverse can be true if the image is washed out then multiply can help rather than trying to drop the highlights ...at least at first
@@RicoResolves Super easy...give it a try...literally open the tone curve module don't make any change and change the blending mode from normal to screen you will be amazed...on a washed out image I think the impact is even greater by changing to multiply...Boris H recently has a post on pixls where he uses multiply with local contrast and even a second instance of LC and you can get some amazing results there....blend modes can be very powerful in DT as well because really everytime you apply a module they all have a blend mode so really a DT edit is really the merged layer edit of the sum of your active modules when you think of it....
Thanks for this video Rico. This new module "tone equalizer" is much better than old "shadows and highlights". I started to use it few weeks ago when I installed Darktable 3.0 and I just love it! Cheers!
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. Definitely it blew my mind when I saw the result after you edited using the tone equalizer! I will start using this. I'm just learning about photography and how to edit the photos. Thanks again Rico! :)
Very important to note...S&H has a bilateral option that removes the halo's often it can still be a quick fix...just use bilateral and not gaussian and perhaps tweak the white point slider as well....so I think often you can still get great results with it even though it often gets panned....
@@RicoResolves Noted....I really didn't like it but I was using the advanced tab and there you are constrained to a curve ie when you move one EV range others move...I never would get a nice result or rarely but in the simple interface if you use the scroll wheel on the image it will behave some what the same as advanced but in simple you can move an individual bar and I found that easier to get a result....one thing your image had a narrow EV range in the tone equalizer...try maybe going into the masking first and hit both the droppers...one for exp comp and contrast comp..this will give you a wider range of EV across your images and allow finer changes...also the changing the model for the guided filter or removing it can create a big change in the map...try tweaking those as well...the trick is the mask histogram is just that the histogram of the mask and not of your image . that fools some people but it the end its worth it to stretch it out as you will have way more tonal ranges to bump or drop if you do it...
Hello! I downloaded newest version of DT to check Tone equalizer and it looks amazing! I tried on leaves / trees in high shadows and now they became visible again - with no halo effect. Thanks for sharing :)
This was amazing. Thank you Rico. But, next thing is totaly crazy : while in Tone Eq. just stay with your cursor inside the dark part of the frame and rotate mouse wheel. All sliders goes up simultanously. Like you are adjusting loudness of your HiFi.
Two things...first to make the most of this you need to tweak your map first to get a broader tonal range. Rico's mask the whole bike was in 1 maybe 2 ev bins but if you spread the mask and smooth it ...much wider range and finer control...as for the bars all moving.sometimes this is good but if you can't get a good spread in EV in the mask and this happens sometimes it is best to be able to move only one bar independently and you can do this in simple mode but not advanced. I think that frustrated many people early on as they used only the advanced tab which is really the simple tab turned horizontally with the image mask histogram and it draws a curve....key to good results is tweaking the mask if you don't you are missing most of the potential. By default you may have a mask over the image that only includes 2 or 3 ev zones...if you spread it there can be 6-8 you rarely get them all...but then you have a much greater ability modify many more tones in your image...
Thank you very much for the many usefull tutorials. Something different. I'm a bit desperate. Can i remove reflection on glases in Darktable. Spotremoval drives me crazy.
@@RicoResolves that is it thanks it has been over a year since i have worked with dt, time to re learn as my work has dried up i am thinking about a web page for cosmo ianiro photography ?

I'll try this out Todd! Working with blend modes is something I find rather hard in darktable. It's something I use more in GIMP.

Few weeks later: I've added this technique to some edits. Great tip Todd. Amazing.

I agree! Glad you like it too!
Just wow!
Thanks man, I'll try it immediately!

Thanks Samuel! If you have any questions about darktable, let me know!
before watching this tutorial, I had no idea how tone equalizer does work.
but now I'll start using tone equalizer for underexposed photos
Fantastic! I'm glad this tutorial helped!

Great addition. I'm staying with the tone equalizer module though. Somehow I had a feeling it creates far less noise too.

Agreed that my preference is to use the contrast equalizer module instead of the Highlights. Thanks again.
It produces very natural results. Super thrilled with it.
Thanks Rico!
You're welcome Brian!
Using the tone equalizer module looks better I think. Thanks for the video.
I agree. Obviously you can tweak it a bit and lose some of the halo, but the tone equalizer is far more natural.
awesome
Gracias Andres Juan!

Fantastic to hear Karolina, glad this tutorial has helped you achieve a better result!
Een flinke stap vooruit, deze nieuwe module. Na jouw uitleg ga ik hem ook gebruiken :-)
Fantastisch Frank! Ben er zeer content mee!

darktable 3.0.1 is really awesome.
I agree Joao!
what happens to the snap shot that is taken when the computer is turned off ?
In my opinion don't use sharp module, low the strenght of denoise (profiled) module to 0,05 instead
Great idea!
how did u scroll in and out ? thanks
found it ctrl ++
Holding control and moving the mouse button towards or away from you makes you zoom in and out.
