    2:27 The purpose of the sai and its pronged arms is to catch and deflect enemy weapons, so I don't understand why you would ever place your fingers within the pronged arms, unless you want to get your fingers smashed or cut off.
    Am I missing something?

    • @KohjiKatoh
      @KohjiKatoh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sorry to bother you, but I’ve a question please!
    I’ve no disrespect to the Japanese styles, but it’s my nature to work in circles….so I do gravitate to the northern Chinese systems….
    I’ve recently been gifted via my brother a very nice set of Japanese style sai….they are so beautiful in their simplicity that I dare not cut off and reverse one of the tongs…”Chinese style”
    However I’ve seen a very few styles of Japanese sai where a hole is drilled through the butt end of the handle, and a large tassel attached…..
    This to me seems quite functional as “theoretically” if thrown properly the sai would travel in the air strait via wind resistance if thrown properly….much like what was called at one time a “Fish dart”
    Would it be disrespectful for me to drill a hole in the butt ends of the handle, and attach a large tassel ?
    I’m no martial artist!, I don’t pretend to be!….
    I’ve just always been fascinated by, and collected non projectile weaponry from around the world since I was a teenager ….
    Personally I think the tassels would be a beautiful, yet functional addition……
    But I don’t want to make such modification if it would be considered disrespectful to the weapon/symbol of Japanese style.
    Thank you for your time and tutorage

    • @andrewgarratt5191
      @andrewgarratt5191 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apologies again, I just watched another video of yours…. I thought “Manji sai” was strictly Chinese sai.
      This is what I was describing when I said “I dare not reverse a tong to emulate Chinese sai”
      My knowledge of such things comes only from a collection of martial arts books printed in the 70’s”

    • @JasePow68
      @JasePow68 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Traditionally, in some schools, the sai were wielded and threes, instead of as a pair,... And, a cord or leather strap was attached to one of the three so that if thrown, it could be retrieved. If not retrieved the third sai, tucked in the belt, would be used in place of the thrown sai. Tassels, on sai, are not traditional Kubodo.

  • @JasePow68
    @JasePow68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You NEVER put your fingers between the monouchi and the tsume (around the yoko) in the natural grip,... BAD (non-martial) technique,... It's how to spot a person who was just taught how to spin fancy for open tournament forms competition,... When I see that as a judge, I downvote big time,...
    That type of technique started around the 1980s from a guy who self-taught and competed in open competition (with back-flips and cartwheels, etc.).
