30 years ago the BBC broadcast the first television reports of a devastating famine in Ethiopia. Up to a million people died in the disaster, but the reports prompted a huge international response, including the Live Aid concert in aid of victims. Many global charities responded to the crisis, among them World Vision. Tesfatsion Dalellew, an Ethiopian himself, saw the reports and was soon leading his charity's response. He told the BBC's Mike Wooldridge - part of the team that brought the news of the famine to the world - how he felt when he saw the first TV pictures.

May God rest the souls lost, and may He enlighten the coming generation into opening their eyes from the destruction of civil war. To all Ethiopians, we should accept this shameful past but understand that it's not about me or you, it's about the millions of people we failed to look back and prevent their death. MAY ETHIOPIA LIVE LONG.

It was truly awful watching the images from Ethiopia's famine. And knowing that all black music reggae, calypso, ska, all these rhythms came from Ethiopia. We had to do something to help them.

The Ethiopian Famine was a tragic event that should never have happened. It certainly shaped my understanding of the world. In part it was a man made disaster.

No it wasn't. Famine happens due to overpopulation. There's simply too many people.

What I'll never understand is why so many of these impoverished people continue to pump out children. During a famine or periods of suffering, you shouldn't be seeing new born babies all over the place. It's not only irresponsible, but also cruel, and yet, every time I see a video showing these severely impoverished nations, all I see are new born babies and toddlers left and right. I just do not understand it.

Since this is a more impoverished country, these folks DO NOT have access to more modern means of mirth control, as we do over here in the Western nations, where things are more advanced. Additionally, Ethiopiah is predominantly Muslhim or Islahmic, which is HIGHLY misogynistick AND chauvinistick. In other words, these ladies are oftentimes mistreated by the menfolk, and are (sometimes) forcibly made to have children by them. With all of that said, STOP looking down your nose on these people, and QUIT being SO judgmental, smdh.

I completely agree. Famine, warzone, poverty-stricken area, etc. - not the best of places to start a family.

@@EuphoriaPiana He's not being judgemental. He's making a perfectly valid point. Regardless of how these children came to be brought into the world and the level of misogynism (which I'm sure exists), it's clearly a stupid and irresponsible thing to do. If you have a baby in a warzone or famine-stricken area, you're just bringing one more person into the word to experience your own suffering.

Those images are something I will never forget. They gave the phrase "children are starving in Africa" (usually used by parents to manipulate children into eating everything on their plates) a whole new meaning because the phrase was actually true. As a result, my siblings and I never tried to back talk my mom whenever she used it.

So tragic. If I were in his shoes at the time it would be the children, they're at the beginning of life. It is a hard choice to choice because you're literally deciding who decides who lives. And their mother's want you to choose their babies who have a chance to live. It's so sad.

My point Luigi Gamer, 30 years ago Ethiopia was in a civil war, and experienced a wave of transition from monarchy to a Communist state. Farmers and business men were locked up and could not able to transport their goods from one place to another, and that is exactly what happened.

I really don't mean to be heartless, but these people have not starved to death after 30 years. I am not so sure there is a famine going on.

I'm 8 years late, but there was a famine going on. More than one at different times actually. Many people died in these famines of Ethiopia. Please don't say things like that. Unfortunately some bad things just keep repeating time after time.
