My grandpa had one of these for a while, he had medical problems and couldn't ride a regular bike anymore. He had one with a clutch and a brake like normal. It helped him still be able to get out and that's great. The best part about it is drifting every time I rode it you go into a corner and clutch kick the bike and the thing would fucking drift lmao

Dookie But a clutch kick is when you pull the clutch in, rev up the bike, and then release it making the tires speed up quickly to match engine speed. The increase in the speed of the tire causes it to lose traction therefore making the bike drive. I'd suggest watching car drift tutorials to get a better understanding

alexis898989 Rev matching is when you match engine RPM with the wheel speed to get a smooth gearshift and give the clutch a longer lifespan. When you perform a clutch kick you make the engine RPM go high and let the clutch go, this (often) make the wheel accelerate more than the ''bike'' itself, causing a wheelspin. The clutch takes a bit of a beating from doing this though, so wouldn't recommend it.

This is for Arne Hurnik and anyone else thinking about the suspension on one of these bikes. I spoke with a owner of a Can am and he said the suspension is computer controlled so any mods will require programing. So I bet any mods are out you have to like it as it is.

Dan it is a snomobile on wheels so it is intended for us that ride sleds in the winter and want a similar experience on the road
that is what I was told about these. I personally see as a motorcycle, the slingshot.... no.... this you sit on it like a bike. Slingshot, you sit and operate it like a car. I think this is a good idea.

There's a couple that comes into work all the time they both have one they are older maybe in their 60's and they just got back from a cross country trip on theirs I think those two are awesome they can't ride regular bikes but to an extent it still gives them that feeling of being on a motorcycle in that sense the can am is an amazing machine personally I wouldn't own one but I don't look down on anyone who chooses that over an actual bike..... just my two cents into it.

having to wheels in the front is way more stable than having two wheels in the back, it's way more practical having two wheels in the front
A single wheel up front makes three wheelers unstable. See the reliant robin or other trike in a sharp turn. When i rode quads I knew a guy with a three wheeler and watched him wreck it big time in a turn.

I think it would do you a lot of good actually, I have a lot of back problems myself which is why I ride a super sport, being leaned over takes the pressure off my back. That and I'm former air force so not exactly been easy on my body. The way these are setup, even the ones with a shifter and front brake control would prally do you fine since its a comfortable seating position, pretty upright, and the mirrors are setup so all you really have to do is a shoulder check and you're good. My opinion, go ahead and pick one up, I'll still see you as a biker even on one of these. Everyone has limits that can't be overcome and there is no shame in that, you do you and have fun doing it!
That's funny, because super sports are actually meant to be ridden with a lot of emphasis in using your core muscles. You must be riding with a lot of weight on your arms then?

Correct me if I'm wrong but since it has two tires up front, doesn't that remove countersteering? That would explain why the handling feels awkward IMO.
I ride one, and it is realy easy to steer, and it corners like it's on rails. He is fighting it, trying to ride it like a 2 wheeler.
This thing is weird as hell, but got DAYUM it sounds good.
A good friend of mine has something similar from Polaris. He lost the lower part of his leg in Afghanistan. Road his bike all the time but was unable to shift gears anymore.
This "bike" is fully automatic, has a reverse gear. Which is awesome since he's always able to ride with us
You hit the nail on the head here Dan, I have a Grandpa who can't handle holding up a motorcycle or handling it anymore and this was great for him. For people who can't ride normally anymore, the three wheeled Can am is great.

You can get the Can Am F3-S with a fully manual transmission that uses a clutch. So, they're not all Automatic or in the case of the one you rode, Semi-Automatic.
Whe you accelerate and get to that point where the engine really kicks in and the engine gets so much louder, is awesome.
They make Spyders with a fully automatic transmission. I have a old model touring spyder and riding it is really fun and where I live everyone waves to me no matter what bike they are on.

I am somebody who rode bikes all my life. I had an accident that left me disabled at that was the end of my riding days. The depression that came with that was unbearable, then a friend showed me a can am. No it is not a motorcycle, but it gave me my life back and although I don't completely feel like myself, my spyder put a grin back on my face and gave me back my identity. Unless you've lived that you probably can't understand it and I get that. I love my spyder, I love what it gave me back ..... it was and is my life saver.
Once you get used to it, they’re a lot of fun! You have to lean into the turns. They’re a blast in the twisties!

It Is a motorcycle, A Spyder has a handlebar. A three wheeler that has a steering wheel is an Autocycle. And considering you come from two wheelers, it will take you about 500 miles

It's a vehicle designed for a specific group or type of person just like a cruiser, supersport, duelsport or a touring bike. Not everyone likes the same thing. In my opinion the spider is for people who have always wanted a bike but never felt that they would be safe on two wheels. By the way, for you to say it's for handicapped or the elderly is as insulting as saying that superstores are for idiots and children that haven't stopped playing with their toys yet.
Exanimis Rex I fully agree. I don’t think it’s specifically for handicapped people. Sure they can ride it but I think it’s for a certain type of people who prefers this over a motorcycle. I think it’s more opinionated rather than anything.

I have one. There is a learning curve. A big one. I came from owning 8 bikes. I agree it took a while to get used to not having a hand break. I’ve reached for a break but got air many times. But the spyder kicks ass on the road. It’s so nice to ride. I place it in the muscle cruiser class. But handling is insane. The curvies are so much fun.
I completely agree with your assessment, me and my whole family ride and when it came time to get my mother a bike we had a bit of a problem she has two hip replacements in his unable to hold up a motorcycle so my dad brought her over to a Can-Am dealer and we ended up taking home a used 2013. As far as the controls go there are various options available I have a friend that has one with a collection the regular controls just like a motorcycle while my mother's has the setup that you have. On the note of veterans there are several aftermarket options available to make it usable for various different disabilities. Your complaint about the foot break for example, there is a piece of ailable that is a direct connection up to the hand that links the break so that you can use your hand instead of your foot. All in all it is an incredibly different ride but can be a total blast. I would highly recommend somebody with disabilities to go and check on out due to the fact that my mother with her to hip replacements can now come out and ride with the rest of the family. Good points. Im 51 yrs old. Looking at a spider F3 limited vs buying a new Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero. I think id miss the leaning part in the twisty corners like lolo pass in Montana/Idaho. Plus I have a horrible back from dual sport adventure riding for yrs. A few wipe outs on the track on my ZX9R. So hard choice. Same price for a well equipped loaded spider F3 limited used. Vs a new Vaquero. I too think it would take some real getting used to as far as controls, and not leaning and dragging foot pegs. Guess ill know soon as I have scheduled a test ride. But you make many points thats were on my mind as well

How does the throttle work on that , is it like a normal bike ?
Instead of leaning into a turn, you want to treat one of these like a quad or shifter cart. Maybe even like a flat track bike. Pushing your hip away from the turn. They have pretty good turn-on-center capabilities. Leaning in pushes your center of gravity and weight to the front tires, which is why they felt "grabby". I get your position on them over bikes, just giving and idea for if you get one that is actually clutched to test out.

I just wanted to say that I've never really had the opportunity to own motorcycles for long, Had a 1979 CB750K that I bobbed out similar to how you did that Magna, and an 89 Ninja 250 that I had more fun than should have been legally allowable.

Anyways! I have plans to buy a motorcycle through the business you do these reviews for. Everything around me is overpriced and the shops aren't that super friendly most of the time. So after looking over Wow Motorcycles I've decided to go through them and honestly I'd still be saving money even after shipping it to Washington State. So thanks for reviewing these bikes and introducing me to them, really appreciate it.
Also, Florida boy born and raised so love watching your videos where you ride around and I get to see areas similar to my old home.

Totally agree. The Spyder isn't for me, but one of my best friends lost a leg and mangled the other in Sadr City, Iraq and this would be perfect for him. It'd be better with a hand brake, but I'm sure that's an easy fix like adding a rear brake lever to a stunt bike. My dad has zero motorcycle experience and I've been trying to get him to rent one so he and my momma can ride down to Key West with me next time we go. I've been trying to explain to him the feeling of riding my bike on a beautiful day, but it's just one of those things easier to do than explain properly. I also see a potential benefit in that it looks like it would be a hell of a lot more comfortable on an abnormally long road trip than my GSXR1000. I might prefer one if I was going from St Pete Beach to Tennessee or farther. I've done St Pete Beach to Tallahassee, Miami, or Key West a ton of times but 8 or 9 hours with a loaded backpack is about as far as I care to do in one shot. I might end up with one anyway, I shattered my left leg when I was working as a security contractor and due to the quality or lack thereof of medical facilities in that country I have osteomyelitis (bone infection) and there's a chance I could lose my leg at some point down the road. Oh well

Hey dan, even though I can't walk yet I couldn't wait any longer to ride since it's already been a year! Couple weeks ago, took a dune buggy apart for the rear axle and frame around where motor would be, welded to the frame of the bike that the truck hit. Feels like I'm human again man, words can't describe much more than that

I used to own an RS sport, you have to lean into turns and sometimes let it drift a little. practice makes that bike a lot more fun. also they are available with a standard clutch and foot controls. I can't ride the autos because I'm missing my left thumb. the have never had a hand break but you can put an after market one on. a buddy of mine did that because he doesn't have a right leg and therefore can't use the foot break. they are fun toys but I eventually went with a motorcycle with a sidecar.

Hey Dan. My buddies dad just bought one underneath his mom's nose while she was on vacay. She really won't let him ride it. They both have scooters and I can tell he really wants to take it out. What kind of advice can you give. He's just laid back and just likes to cruise without playing around with controls. How do I convince my friend's mom to let him drive the damn thing.

I could see the benefits of a 3rd wheel, like if it's your only form of transportation. You have that little added safety in the wet and rain with a third wheel but the Piaggio MP3 would be more fun. They are narrow and you can lean up to 40 degrees in corners.

My dad and mom want one of these because they love the open air. My mom has a fear of motorcycles because she has known several close people to her die on them and the Spider having a much bigger size makes it more likely to be seen.

As a motorcyclist who has ridden a Spyder F3 (a manual one), I agree with you Dan. This is not something I would ever consider buying. Not only are they are much more expensive and depreciate terribly, they are nothing like a motorcycle. However, I do see where there is a market for them. They are pretty quick, that is if you can keep traction (the one I rode spun 3rd at about half throttle). I mean they come with at 3cyl 1300 Rotax engine. However, they are nothing at all like a motorcycle in terms of turning. They have three wheels for a reason. I expect it is like riding a snowmobile where if you want to turn going fast you have to lean way in to the turn even though the bike doesn't lean at all. I also could not stand the lack of front brake lever, it really made it odd. Again these bikes have a specific market and the Spyder is a great option for that, but me ,like you Dan, if I'm still able to ride two wheels, I will ride two wheels.
They make the Can Ams in a full on manual with foot controls. Dan was just on the auto version.
The new ones are also capable of switching the traction control off.

I'm 53 and ride a FZ6. I plan on staying on two wheels as long as possible.
One of my friends has a Spyder, he's 65+ and wasn't feeling stable on his Harley. He rode all his life and the Spyder, although not as fun as a motorcycle, it still has some of the feel as a bike. Sure better than sitting in a rocking char waiting to die...
